4-Way Trailer Connector Installation

Because the color/function of the new connector wires may not match the color/function of your vehicle wires, be sure to use a tester (sold separately) to determine the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness before installing this connector. Once you've determined the matching functions, use the included quick-splice connectors to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector. Quick-splices, or "wire taps," offer a quick way to make connections without you having to strip and twist wires. Just place the wires in it and snap the cover down.

The number 1 reason trailer wiring comes up faulty is a bad ground, so make sure your grounding wire has a solid and clean connection to metal. To make this connection, you'll need a self-tapping screw and a ring terminal (sold separately).

Wiring Configuration

Wire Color Wire Function
Green Right turn and brake light
Brown Tail lights and running lights
White Ground
Yellow Left turn and brake light

Quick Tips:

We install a lot of wiring harness around here, so we thought we'd share a few tips we've picked up over the years:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

  • Trailer Wiring for a 2004 Nissan Frontier
Your vehicle requires a converter to convert the trucks 5-Wire system down to the 4-Wire system used on trailers. You will find a connection point behind the rear bumper on the passenger side frame rail, that you will use to plug in the Plug-N-Tow (TM) Wiring Harness, item # 33515. This wiring harness has a converter installed and plugs inline with the original factory connectors. If you want to hard wire your trailer connection then you could use the Upgraded Circuit Protected Taillight...

  • Replacement Trailer Connector For 2001 Toyota Tundra
If the connector you cut off your 2001 Toyota Tundra is a 4-way, the connector I recommend is part # 118001. This is a 48 inch long harness with the vehicle end 4-way connector. If you cut a 7-way connector off, then I recommend the Hopkins Endurance Quick-Install 7-Way Trailer Connector with Universal Pigtail Harness, part # HM47210. Since you said you cut the wires on your truck, you can simply attach this harness as a replacement. To keep the connector more secure I recommend part...

  • Availability of a Trailer Wiring Diagram for a 2012 Honda Goldwing and 1999 Escapade SE Trailer
Wiring your motorcycle to tow your motorcycle trailer will require some testing and investigation of the lighting configuration on your trailer. First, check the lights on your 1999 Escapade SE trailer. If the trailer has separate lights or bulbs for the turn and stop lights then the trailer will have a 5 wire connector. In this case you will need to contact Honda for wiring for the trailer, that will protect the motorcycles circuitry. If the trailer has combined stop and turn signals...

  • Can Curt 2-Inch RV Bumper Trailer Hitch Receiver # E-100 Mount to camper to Tow Boat Trailer
The Curt 2-Inch RV Bumper Trailer Hitch Receiver # E-100 has enough capacity for towing a 3500-lb trailer load like your 17-foot jon boat. It will mount to a 4-inch square channel bumper using the included hardware. You will want to check with your camper manufacturer to verify that your particular camper model has the bumper and frame strength to allow towing a trailer with a GTW of around 3000-3500-lbs. Both the camper's bumper and the frame structure have to be sufficiently strong to...

  • Directions for Installing a Brake Controller on a 1989 Chevrolet Silverado Without Towing Package
Installing a brake controller on your 1989 Chevy Silverado pickup is pretty straight forward. To start, you will need all of the parts for the complete installation of a trailer connector and the brake controller. The parts needed are a 4-Way trailer connector, item # 118001, or # 118315, a Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, and a brake controller of your choice. Brake controllers are not vehicle specific but there are some things to keep in mind. A proportional...

  • Availability of 4-Flat Trailer Wiring for a 2006 Ford F-150
If your 2006 Ford F-150 has a factory tow package, the Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 40185, that you referenced is the correct harness. If your truck does not have a factory tow package, you will need Draw-Tite Wiring, # 18252. This is a hardwire 4-Flat. You will need access to the taillight wiring. The yellow wire is left turn and stop. The brown wire is running lights. The green wire is right turn and stop. The white wire is ground. If you just need to replace a broken 4-Way,...

  • How Do I Install a 4-Way Trailer Connector on a 2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara
Part # 118001 will not work on your 2009 Suzukia Grand Vitara. Since the brake and turn signals on your vehicle are on separate circuits, you will need a converter. Part # 56002 is a custom fit harness that will plug into the tail light connectors of your tail lights and convert the separate brake and turn signals to allow proper function with standard 4-Pole trailers. I have added a link to the part and the instructions below.

  • Parts needed to Attach 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring to a 4-Pin Round Harness on a 1995 Ford F-150
You have 3 options for connecting your trailer with a 4-Way flat connector to your F-150 with 4-Way Round connector. Probably the best way to go in the long run, would be to use the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, item # 118316, to install a 4-Way Flat connector on your truck and eliminate the 4-Way round connector. I have included installation instructions for this harness for you to review. This will allow you to tow your trailer with a direct connection to...

  • Adding Tail Lights to a Cargo Carrier at the Back of a Travel Trailer
First for a light kit that is designed for certain cargo carriers you can use # 98174LED. It uses a 4-Way connector and since the brake and turn signal lights on your trailer are combined (based on the fact that it uses a 7-Way connector) To add a 4-Way you can tap into the trailer's lights using # 118001. And to mount it at the back of the trailer you can use bracket # 18144. Depending on the cargo carrier you have you may also need 2 of bracket # BK70BB to attach the lights.

  • Can a 2nd 4-Way Flat Connector Be Added To a 2024 Nissan Frontier ?
I have a couple options for you since I do not know what you already have on your 2024 Nissan Frontier. First if you already have the factory tow package with a connector like the # HM40975 built into the bumper you can simply use the Wiring Harness # C55384 which will tee in line behind the connector. If you already have a single 4-way flat connector, you could simply splice in a 2nd Connector # 118001. This particular harness has 48" long wires allowing you to place it somewhere else...

To do so you will need to use a circuit tester to identify the wires that right turn and brake signal, the left turn and brake signal, and the tail light signal. • 4-way Options for use With a Tow Ready Mounting Bracket
The Hopkins 4-way # HM48030 that you referenced is a great 4-way, but like you noticed, it is much larger than most 4-ways so it would not fit through the Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat # 18144 that you have. You basically have two choices at this point. You can either buy a different 4-way that will fit through the hole of the # 18144. Or you could cut off your # HM48030 and then run the wires through the front of the # 18144 and then reconnect the wires to the 4-way wiring of your vehicle. Check...
