Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Fastway e2 Sway Control

The two points of sway control within the e2 are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight-distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system.

The direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the e2 system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the e2 uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway-control system.

Installed the Fastway E2 hitch on an 2019 F150 to tow a 19 ft travel trailer (E-Pro 19FD) which has 480 ibs tongue weight, trailer loaded is about 3800 lbs. I towed a few trips without a WDH and there was an annoying "bounce" or teetering at the hitch point (on roads that were not perfectly smooth) and a small amount of sway at highway speeds. I Just finished testing and the hitch reduced the bounce and sway and improved overall handling. I did have a problem with the UPS delivery and Nicol T at etrailer immediately got it straightened out and I called customer support with an install question and they were also excellent. My truck already had the timbrem SES rear suspension kit and I needed to know if that changed the install process (since the bed of the truck will not go down once the bumpers is on the axel - about 1 inch). Anyone installing this hitch - watch the install video along with the instruction manual...

Excellent, I now have taken a few long trips towing the trailer, total 8000 miles. 90 of driving conditions are excellent. Highway driving when there is a lot of truck traffic, trailer is jumping around and swaying and you have to slow down to 60, which is dangerous with the trucks passing At 75..

E2 weight distribution/anti-sway system arrived right on time. The PET was easy to follow and the unit was easy to install. I had to make some slight modifications to my travel trailer to make it fit. I followed the step by step instructions to adjust the unit and just pulled it to the lake camp sight. It performed incredibly well, and the difference before and after is unbelievable!

I am very pleased on the performance of our E2 hitch. Being from central Montana, it can be quite windy along the mountains. With a 28 ft camper this was my greatest concern as most of our trips are into the mountains. The hitch leveled out the trailer, distributed the weight and controlled the wind gusts as I had hoped and expected. Jennifer was super helpful when there was an issue with my order online. She took care of the issue and had our hitch on its way.

by:

I did my research and this product fit the bill to a T. I get the benefit of sway control and weight distribution in this package. Very happy.

A big plus for me is this weight distribution hitch allows me to back in to camping spaces with NO discernible hitch noise! It is very quiet.

I would recommend this product. It has a more favorable price point than Equal-i-zer.

I am still very pleased with the product. I often look at other weight distribution setups and feel the Fastway is superior.

Installed today with no problems. My Frontier Pro4x now sits level with a fully loaded truck and camper. etrailer staff did an excellent job of guiding me to the right sized hitch. Smooth ride, I'm happy!

This appears to be an excellent weight distribution/sway system. I'll test on a long haul later this year but short 30 minute trip went without a hitch (no pun intended).Installation was not hard and the instruction manual was really good. I rated only 4 stars for several reasons. First, buying a 2-5/16" trailer ball is not a problem but finding a RV shop with a torque wrench capable of 450 ft/lbs is really tough. Have you priced a 450 ft/lb torque wrench lately? Most will lie and just use a pneumatic impact gun. I feel that all manufacturers and/or their dealers should sell the proper size ball and offer to attach at no charge if they feel the torque value is that important. By the way, you need a 1-7/8 inch THIN-WALLED socket to attach the ball. You will also need a 3/4, 1-1/8, and 1-1/4 inch socket for the installation. The next highest torque value was 250 ft/lbs. I do find the trailer.com videos a great job aid!!! Each installer does things slightly different sometimes so it's good to watch several videos nd compare all the tips and tricks. If you don't want to invest in additional tools, find a reputable RV shop that is willing to install the system correctly.

After one year, I would recommend the FASTWAY-weight distribution hitch. The trip to west Texas encountered high winds on I-10 around Sonora and plenty of big truck traffic yet no problems whatsoever with sway. So far, I am happy with my purchase.

This item is great helps a lot while towing trailer

by:

Initially sway control worked as designed but as friction material wore away, sway control decreased and hitch became noisy. I contacted Fastway and they said the wearing of the friction material was normal and I could replace the worn part (at my expense) if I wanted. Hitch seems to no longer control sway. A total waste of money!

Most of the steel on steel friction based systems will have wear and tear which will mean replacing parts every so often. If you want a system that does not use solely friction on friction then take a look at the straight line system from part # RP66084.

Great product with no issues. Staff was very friendly and professional!!!

Gladly write a review I Love etrailer.com . I already took a picture of my new goodies and mentioned etrailer.com my my ICOG Facebook page . I say just go to etrailer they got everything you need and a few things you never knew about .

I will update this review after I have installed the Weight Distribution system on my unit, but I wanted to give a special thank you to Vanessa who did an outstanding job of getting me a part that had broken out of the box during shipment. She did a great job of keeping me up to date on the status of my missing item. The item was very heavy and the packing it came in today was outstanding. Many thanks.

The Weight Distribution system has been working great. I have had only one minor problem in that the L bracket hangers have bowed slightly which has caused the bottom of the hanger to shift to the rear of the trailer. I have torque the hanger bolts per the installation instructions. Since the bottom bolt of the hanger assembly does not touch the bottom of the trailer rail, I am going to try and add a spacer between it an the trailer rail to see if that alleviates the issue. Load sharing is great and I have never had the trailer sway on me at all. I am open to suggestions on other ways to solve this issue. By the way I am in the process of upgrading this unit for my new toy hauler. Going up to the 1,200 12,000 lb unit.

by:

I communicated a few times with Miranda in Customer Service, during and after my purchase. Miranda was helpful, knowledgeable and quick to respond!! The product seems well made and pretty easy to install with the exception of high torque requirements on two bolts and trailer ball. I'd give the install instructions a 4 STAR rating. The install of the spacer washers concerning the "head pitch" are vague with no picture. I referred to a Video for clarification on the install.

I just sold my 2020, 20ft Toyhauler, after one year and only about 6 trips. Thanks COVID! I’ve never towed anything the size of a camper and would highly recommend the E2 assembly! The E2 makes the camper feel like a continuation of my RAM 1500 V6. Lots of back roads and mountain towing and always in control! Only concern, when I removed the E2 tongue brackets when i sold the camper last month, one of the four factory nuts and bracket was a little loose? Picking up new 2021 Transcend next weekend!

by:

The hitch was more difficult to install than anticipated. We needed to purchase a larger than typical wrench to get the job done. What took most of the time was the adjustments rather than the physical attaching. Make sure you are careful with your measurements! Overall I am very pleased with the product. It definitely helps produce a smoother ride.

simple design
and easy use makes this a winner in my books.

by:

The only reason I am giving this four stars instead of five is the adjustability of the hitch. For my vehicle, the hitch was either way too high or low, so there is a "watch out" here. I chose for it to be lower, without getting a specially drilled bracket (weekend warrior hauling doesn't justify that). In general, it was extremely easy to install and the instructions were straight forward however they were contradictory with height measurements. First it talks about wanting to put the tow vehicle height halfway between the unhitched height and the initial hitched height, but then it states to put the final heights back to the original measurements. Being an engineer and thinking about it, as well as looking at instructions from other manufacturers, you want the tow vehicle to be as close to the unhitched height as possible. You do NOT want to overcompensate, though. Once I figured that out, it was a piece of cake to set up.

Again, easy to install, easy to hitch, easy to set and unset the torsion bars (using your tongue jack to take the weight off helps a bunch), great sway control, and great weight distribution (if it is set up well). Make certain you always keep the trunion pivot pins well greased to avoid wear, so buy a tube or two of grease and keep it with the hitch.

by:

Our friends (who had a large Roo trailer) recommended that we get he Equalizer E2 trunnion hitch for our 26-foot Jayco mated to our F150. Everything has been great. It is easy to hook up and disconnect, and when pulling, the trailer is stable and we have had no swaying of any kind. Our [retailer] tech installed it, and we are totally happy with it.

by:

I drive a Chevy Silverado Custom and wanted to pull our little travel trailer, with a GVW of just under 4k pounds. The instructions that came with the hitch and video on the e trailer were great. I was able to put the hitch on by myself. The task was not difficult but a little time consuming with the measuring. I was able to pull our little trailer with no problems.

by:

I purchased this unit for my daughter and son-in-law after they purchased their first RV trailer. I've had a little experience with WDH (weight distribution hitch) and highly recommended and explained this one for them. Installation was straight forward with the simple to understand directions. The balancing of the units went easy after viewing the video at etrailer.com. I feel better knowing they will be traveling safe with this combination sway control and WDH.

by:

This hitch set up was perfect for us. We have a small 21 foot travel trailer and pull it with a standard 2013 1500 Silverado. The hitch did its job lifting the rear of the truck to level. Great sway control. I highly recommend it. When we eventually go with a bigger set up, I WILL be buying this brand again.

by:

Easy install. The instructions are very simple. However, I bought this for an enclosed cargo trailer so as my load changes the hitch will need adjustment. Seems very strong. Also, the first one I ordered was damaged in shipping. Props to E-Trailer for intercepted the shipment and sending another the same day. Great service!

by:

There is consistently more pressure on the road side of the hitch regardless of which torsion bar we put on that side, so I’m inclined to think that the engineering of the hitch may be off slightly. We do get some sway when being passed by another vehicle, but that is manageable.

by:

Good Product and great service. The order was received quickly and exactly as ordered. The hitch installation was well documented and was easily completed (after purchasing a few larger wrenches). Using this on a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee pulling a 2horse bumper pull trailer. So far, it seems to make the trailer more stable, although I have yet to haul it with both horses loaded.

by:

The dealer installed the hitch when we picked up the new trailer. They made it look easy. Since we pulled away from the lot we have had no issues. Our first trip was 1200 miles over numerous mountain passes in OR, CA & NV. Easy to connect. I'd recommend this hitch to anyone.

  • How To Choose The Correct Fastway E2 Weight Distribution System For A Ford Escape
In order to choose the correct weight distribution system, you will need to find the total tongue weight of your towing setup by adding the tongue weight of both your loaded ready to tow trailer and any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The average total tongue weight (TW) rating of a trailer is typically 10-15% of the gross trailer weight (GTW). An easy way to find this would involve using a tongue weight scale like the etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale part # e99044....

I highly recommend using the Reese Strait-Line # RP66083 for your R-Pod 190 because this is one of the few systems that fights sway before it starts instead of correcting it after it already starts. This gives you a much better ride quality and since this uses chains it will be a little quieter than a system that mounts solely with brackets. You just need a hitch ball like the 2" # A-90 or the 2-5/16" # 19286 to complete your towing setup. The lift brackets need to be mounted about 30"...

The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System part # FA92-00-0800 is my recommendation for this. It can be used in reverse as well without unhooking. Please note, you'll also need the 2" Hitch Ball for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems part # EQ91-00-6080 to complete your setup.

  • What Typically Causes Trailer Sway and Will Weight Distribution System Prevent It
If you are experiencing persistent sway at highway speeds your real issue is most likely trailer loading. You need to move the weight of any cargo forward if at all possible so that the tongue weight is between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight. The other possible contributing factor for sway is worn out suspension components which you can find by inspecting the setup and fixing as needed. Now when it comes to the correct tongue weight range for WD spring bars you want to...

  • Can a 2011 Toyota Highlander Tow a Forest River Surveyor
The towing capacity of your 2011 Toyota Highlander is 5,000 lbs if you do indeed have the factory towing package like you mentioned. According to my research, you have the 2WD model not the AWD model. In general, the AWD models are better for towing. However, the towing capacity for your Highlander will not change based on the 2WD or AWD configuration. I took a look online and there are several different 2011 Forest River Surveyors but all of them save for the M-294, M-302, M-304, and M-305...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2021 Keystone RV Springdale 1860SS
We can absolutely get your 2021 Keystone RV Springdale 1860SS set up with a weight distribution hitch with sway control. And for your camper, which has a 5,000 GVWR, the option I highly recommend is from Fastway: - Fastway e2 Weight Distribution with 2-Point Sway Control # FA92-00-0800 The reason I like the Fastway more than any other option for your Keystone is because it is the overall best value among weight distribution hitches; it offers high quality at a price that is better than...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 2019 Forest River R-Pod RP-180
The weight distribution system I recommend for your 2019 Forest River R-Pod RP-180 is the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control part # FA92-00-0800. This system is rated for a total tongue weight (loaded tongue weight of trailer + weight of cargo behind rear axle of tow vehicle) of 400 lbs - 800 lbs which I suspect you will be within while fully loaded and ready to tow. The most important thing when choosing a weight distribution system is that you do not go over the max...

  • Reducing Rear Suspension Sag on a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe When Connecting To 18 Enclosed Trailer
The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-204-40 are not confirmed fit for your 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. The new chassis uses an independent rear suspension which no longer work with their springs. Using a hitch like the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0800 will give you the best results when you tow your 18' enclosed trailer. This particular hitch is rated for trailers with 400-800lbs of tongue weight and a maximum trailer weight of 8,000lbs. The weight distribution bars...
