What Typically Causes Trailer Sway and Will Weight Distribution System Prevent It
Question:
I have weight distribution bar rated at 1000 pounds. My travel travel has a loaded weight rating of 7000 pounds. I’m trying to reduce swaying as much as possible and have been told I need 600 pound weight distribution bars. Would be interested in your opinion. Thanks.

If you are experiencing persistent sway at highway speeds your real issue is most likely trailer loading. You need to move the weight of any cargo forward if at all possible so that the tongue weight is between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight. The other possible contributing factor for sway is worn out suspension components which you can find by inspecting the setup and fixing as needed.
Now when it comes to the correct tongue weight range for WD spring bars you want to go with the setup that has a tongue weight range which allows the loaded tongue weight of your trailer to fall right into the middle of. So for a 7k trailer a 1k tongue weight setup would be about ideal. Going with a 600 lb tongue weight setup would not be rated high enough and overall the system wouldn't be effective. Weight distribution does a great job preventing and stopping sway that comes from high winds or passing semi-trucks but it will not stop persistent sway at highway speeds.
