Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Chrissy from etrailer did a fantastic job getting taking my order and getting it shipped promptly. I had a tire blow out on my fifth wheel, and no local place could order the correct size. So kudos to etrailer and Chrissy for getting me back on the road !!!!

etrailer is fantastic. Have had two more thread separations on Westlakes. Tire shop said the steel belts separated due to manufacture process. I’m done with Westlakes running Sailuns now.

by:

Easy to order tires and fast delivery. Best place to buy tires at a real good price plus free delivery. Thank you

I purchased 4 of these Westlake G rated tires to replace the original same tires on my fifth wheel travel trailer. I had excellent wear and durability with the first set so I purchased the same again. Martha was my salesperson and she was great. The order process went smoothly and the tires shipped promptly. I had them shipped to a local tire shop and they were received in a timely manner. I’m having them installed this next week. Thanks Martha and eTrailer for a quick smooth order process.

by:

Far exceeded my expectations, the tires arrived in two days and they’re all spot on! Caylin was efficient and I was informed throughout the process. I replaced all six of my Goodyear Marathons with the Westlake G Rated Trailer Tires because of it’s enhanced construction, it provides confidence in towing heavy loads while Rv’ng coast to coast. My 2010 Keystone Raptor stands a little taller now. HOOH-AH.

by:

The only tires we use. We travel 10,000 miles a year and these tires give us peace of mind.

by:

Paul B made the experience with ordering and receiving our Westlake tires great. He helped us with the speedy delivery to guarantee we had them in time to start our adventure.

by:

Second time ordering these tires. However if you take advantage of the free shipping from etrailer.com don’t expect your order fee to be delivered on the estimated delivery date. My ordered arrived 2 days late and the customer service rep acted like I should of paid for expedite shipping because they are busy this time of year.

by:

Tires came new but 1.4 years old. It’s august 23 and the tires were 16th and 17th week of 2022

by:

Wow I ordered 5 Westlake tires on 4/9/23 and they were delivered on 4/12/23 with free delivery very fast etrailer has my business for ever these tires are for my 5th wheel

by:

My 4 Westlake tires were delivered on time and in perfect condition. The DOT codes on three tires were the exact week and year of manufacture and one was only manufactured three weeks earlier. These are great results as age is more of a facture than tread wear in the RV world. I will be using the new tires on my heavy 16k lb. 5th wheel and moving one of my best old tires to be the Spare.
Really impressed with the 4k+ load rating and 14 bias ply tread of tire and the "G" rating as well. Big upgrades from my last tires.
etrailer did an excellent in shipping and communication in tracking of the order.

by:

Great company, excellent service! Order arrived when promised.
I’ve used these tires on my GD376TH with great success. I’ve also ordered with them before and always super reliable.

by:

Nice to get free shipping

by:

Excellent tire. Very heavy duty and seems to be holding up well. Only have had them for a few months but so far so good.

  • Recommended 17-1/2" Rim for a Dexter 8,000 lbs Axle
Yes, you can upgrade from a 16" rim to a 17-1/2" rim if you have the clearance in your fenders and the right size studs. I recommend the Americana Modular Wheel w/ -0.5 Offset item # AM22461. This is a 17-1/2" x 6-3/4" rim with an 8 on 6-1/2 lug pattern. It looks like Dexter 8,000 lbs axles all came with 8 on 6-1/2 lug pattern. The issue is some of them came with 9/16" studs and some came with 5/8" studs. If yours have 5/8 studs then you won't have to change them. You will need a press...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size 215/75R17.5
Taskmaster makes great trailer tires that our customers really like. They have high weight capacities, and higher speed ratings and overall are reliable. We don't carry Blackline so we don't have any experience with them. Another great option is the USA made Goodyear brand. If you can get back to me with the size you need I can recommend you the best option. Taskmaster and Goodyear are both great options but the advantage goes to Goodyear as they have a more advanced tread design, higher...

  • What To Set TPMS Max PSI and Temperature For 215/75R17.5 Trailer Tire
You'll want to set your max pressure alarm to 20-25% over the PSI rating of the tire which is stamped in the sidewall, set the low pressure alarm to 10% below the PSI rating of the tire, and for a temperature 158 degrees is considered to be the safe max for the tire. You didn't mention the load range of your tire, but a 215/75R17.5 load range H tire like the # LHWL097 you had looked at is 123 PSI so if this matches your tires then you'd want to set the alarms at 150 PSI, 110 PSI, and 158...

  • Replacing G Rated Tires That Were Blowing Out
If your tires had a load rating of G and were blowing out, you may be better served by using tires with a higher load rating. We carry two tires with a load rating of H, the Provider # TTWP15175 and Westlake # LHWL097; each of these are 215/75R17.5 radial tires that fit 17-1/2" wheels with a section width of 8.3" and outer diameter (when inflated) of 30.2". With dual tires, their individual loads are a maximum of 4,540 lbs at 123 psi. I would recommend the Westlake # LHWL097 because they...

The only 215/75-17.5 tires we offer have a 16 ply rating in a load range H, like the # LHWL097 tire used on the Westlake # LHAS701 wheel/tire combo you'd looked at. The tire has a 4085 lb per wheel/8170 lb per axle weight rating.

  • What Larger Than 16 Wheel Options Are There For 8 on 6-1/2 Bolt Patter On Trailer
I have another option for you, but there really isn't options for a 17" wheel with the 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern that your 2018 Montana 3791RD has. Your best option is going to be going with a 17-1/2" wheel like # 274-000006 that'll let you use higher rated tires such as the Westlake 215/75R17.5 # LHWL097 which has a massive 4,805lb capacity per tire. You'll need to make sure your trailer has enough clearance for these, as they measure in at 30.2" tall, so if you can send me your current...

  • Back-Spacing of Americana Modular Wheel w/ -0.5 Offset
A negative offset like the offset on the Americana Modular Wheel w/ -0.5 Offset - 17-1/2" x 6-3/4" Rim - 8 on 6-1/2 - Silver # AM22461 reduces the back-spacing. Since this is a 6-3/4" wide rim that means the back-spacing is 3-7/8" since it has a -0.5" offset. I'm assuming you are looking for hub-piloted wheels which use flange nuts. These wheels have a pilot diameter of 4.76" and use a 5/8"-18 flange nut. For tires that fit these wheels we have the Westlake 215/75R17.5 Radial Trailer...

The H-rated Westlake ST215/75R17.5 tire # LHWL097 can handle more weight (4805-lbs at 123-psi pressure) but it has a lower J speed rating of 62-mph. This tire has a smaller diameter, 30.1-inches...

The Westlake 215/75R17.5 Radial Trailer Tires # LHWL097 that your Cedar Creek 38FBH came equipped with should always be inflated to its max 123 psi. I absolutely recommend filing the tires up on the trailer to meet this spec. Some trailer tire manufactures are okay with this and have an official chart that lays out different...
