Recommended 17-1/2" Rim for a Dexter 8,000 lbs Axle

Question:

I want to change from 16inch rims 17.5inch rims. I have a trailer with 8,000 lb Dexter axles. Can I get new rims without changing the studs? If I have to change the studs do you carry the correct stud?

Yes, you can upgrade from a 16" rim to a 17-1/2" rim if you have the clearance in your fenders and the right size studs. I recommend the Americana Modular Wheel w/ -0.5 Offset item # AM22461. This is a 17-1/2" x 6-3/4" rim with an 8 on 6-1/2 lug pattern. It looks like Dexter 8,000 lbs axles all came with 8 on 6-1/2 lug pattern. The issue is some of them came with 9/16" studs and some came with 5/8" studs. If yours have 5/8 studs then you won't have to change them.

You will need a press to change the studs if you have 9/16" ones. You will not be able to upgrade your wheels unless you do this.

Either way you will want to verify the size of your pilot hole. This wheel fits a 4.76" diameter.

For a tire you will want the Westlake 215/75R17.5 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range H item # LHWL097.
