Choosing Appropriate Load Range Ttires for 2011 Newmar Kountry Star 5th Wheel

Question:

We are looking to buy a 5th wheel that is not very near us , so taking accurate measurements could be difficult. This is a 2011 Newmar Kountry Star 35LKSA, 13.3k empty, 16k max. It has the common 235/85/16s 4. The issue is even a G rated tire might get closer to maxed out for this. The only H rated tire is the 215/75R17.5 with the 8 - 6.5inch lug pattern. Can you tell me if those could replace the current tires/rims? Or at least measurements of that Provider tire to make sure they would clear the other tire, the fiberglass skirting covering the tires on the slide outs and if the lug pattern will work, or suggest another H tire or other option.

The highest load rating tire we offer in the ST235/85-16 size is the G-rated Westlake # LHWL410 which is rated for 4400-lbs at its 110-psi pressure. This tire will fit on 16 x 6, 16 x 6-1/2 and 16 x 7-inch rims and it carries an L speed rating, meaning it is good for highway speeds up to 75-mph.

The H-rated Westlake ST215/75R17.5 tire # LHWL097 can handle more weight (4805-lbs at 123-psi pressure) but it has a lower J speed rating of 62-mph. This tire has a smaller diameter, 30.1-inches when mounted and inflated, as compared to the diameter of the ST235/85-16, which is 31.7-inches.

Since your trailer is not likely to be loaded up to maximum capacity when you go to pick it up you might be fine sticking with the same load rating. You will be able to see the specs on the trailer and the manufacturer's recommended tires on its primary VIN plate.

You can extend the lifespan of any trailer tire by making sure you never overload it beyond its load rating, never drive faster than the tire's rated speed and always keep them fully inflated to the rated psi pressure on the tire sidewall.
