Hub-Piloted Wheel

This wheel is hub piloted, which means that it centers on the hub, not the lugs. The wheel requires the use of flange nuts (sold separately) for installation.

Corrosion-Resistant Finish

The steel wheel goes through a 3-step finishing process that makes it both attractive and corrosion resistant. The wheel is first submerged in a zinc phosphate bath to ensure good paint adhesion. It is then e-coated with an acrylic primer base and finished on both sides with baked-on DuPont powder paint.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Taskmaster Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - TA37GR

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Diamondback 235/75R17.5 Radial Tire in a Load Range J, and it's mounted on this 17 1/2 inch Silver Solid Center Wheel with the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this tire and wheel assembly is ideal for heavy-duty trailers. Now, what's unique on this assembly is this tire is match mounted and balanced to the wheel for ride comfort and durability. Basically, match mounting of your tires and wheels is a process in which the tire's installation position onto the wheel is specifically selected to minimize final force of imbalance. The method to match mounting is what they do is they align the tire's lightest spot with the wheel's heaviest spot and eliminates most of the radial force that can cause tire and suspension wear.

Then they do the final balancing by applying weights to specific spots on the inside and the outside lips of the wheel to eliminate any chance of uneven wear or vibration. So just to show you, if you look on the outside, there's the weight here, and if we spin it around to the inside, they have the weight here. So basically, this tire and wheel assembly is balanced, so when you get it, it's already to bolt on. Now, the wheel they use on this is a heavy-duty steel wheel. As you can see, it's a solid center design, which is sturdy and corrosion resistant.

They do use a three-step finishing process on it that includes first a zinc phosphate bath, then an e-coat primer, and then a silver powder coat on both sides of the wheel. Now, this is a hub piloted wheel, and that means it centers onto the hub, not the lugs, so it will require the use of flange nuts for installation. The part number for the flange nuts we do sell separately, it's part number 95188, and they're usually listed on this product page as a related product. Now, this wheel does have a negative offset of 0.19 inches. The negative offset is when the hub mounting surface right back here is in the back of the wheel center line, so the center line of the wheel is right here, so basically, that mounting surface moves back 0.19 inches, and a negative offset means it'll move the tire away from the trailer a little bit.

The size on the wheel itself, the diameter is 17 1/2 inches, the width on just the wheel is 6 3/4 inches. Now, this wheel does have a bolt pattern of 8 on 6 1/2 inches, and if you wanna measure that on a wheel that's an even number of lugs, like in this case, eight, it's pretty easy, because you can see the lug holes are directly across from each other, so when you measure, pick any hole, let's say this one, measure from the center of that hole directly across to the center of the hole right across from it. So on this wheel it measures 6 1/2 inches, so that means it's an 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. We mentioned the wheel lugs, they use a 5/8 inch by 18 sized flange nut. Weight capacity on just the wheel is 6,005 pounds, and the pilot hole diameter, which is this large hole here, which is critical since this is a hub piloted wheel, diameter on this opening is 4.76 inches.

Now, the tire on it is a radial tire, it is constructed with double steel belts for a nice long life, it's great for highway use, has a nylon tread firming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation. And the size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, is gonna be 235/75R17.5, the R means it's a radial tire. Section width on this tire, 9.2 inches, overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 31.4 inches, and this tire is a Load Range J, which means it's a 18-ply tire, so it does have a maximum load capacity of 6,005 pounds, or, I'm sorry, yes, 6,005 pounds at 125 psi. Now, this tire does have a speed rating, all the tires now are coming through with speed ratings on them, and they labeled the sidewall with a letter designation to let you know the speed rating, and where that's at is right after the size we just went over. You'll see two numbers for the load index, and then you'll see the letter M stamped there. The speed rating M means 81 mile per hour speed rating. And this assembly does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation specifications, and the SAE standards. But that should do it for the review on the Diamondback 235/75R17.5 Radial Tire in a Load Range J on this 17 1/2 inch Silver Solid Center Wheel with the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern.
