Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

These tires replaced some old, rickety tires on split rims that were pretty dangerous. They have worked out so well, and look good on this old trailer. The price was right, and they were delivered pretty quickly.
Thanks so much

by:

I was amazed a the fast delivery from etrailer. The two tires arrived within 3 days and in great condition. I was expecting the tires to take much longer so I was pleasantly surprised. The tires and wheels look great. I will be using them only as spares for our trailers but they definitely look better than what's on there now. The price was very competitive with other places, if not better than most. The free delivery was great.

Thanks

I received four wheels/tires two days after ordering and immediately mounted them on my old fertilizer spreader that I now use as a diesel fuel nurse trailer. Great service and fast delivery! I'm looking forward to pulling my trailer down the road at highway speeds; my old farm implement tires restricted me to 25mph!

I have a pop-up camper that was converted to a utility trailer. The old rims were very rusty and I only found out when I went to install this new Kenda tire/rim combo that the old rims were bent/warped and difficult to remove from center bore. This new Kenda tire and rim combo makes my trailer look so much better! The rubber on these tires is very grippy, which I really like! My old, dry-rotted tires felt like plastic to the touch with no grip whatsoever. I used the etrailer website to learn how to properly measure the spacing between lugs to ensure I buy the right size. Shipping came super quick and all in one box. Tires were filled to the correct psi. I could not have been happier! I've since replaced the sides of the trailer with pressure treated wood, added 2 strips of 2"x 2"x6', 1/4" thick angle iron to the underside of the 2x8x8 plank flooring and used it to haul loam and crushed rock. All went super smooth and feels great to be able to use my utility trailer again!

by:

Great fit ,excellent paint on wheels ,tires were nice looking too...thanks

by:

I googled search for trainler spare for Coleman 17B RV trailer and etrailer come up with the exact tire / rim that i needed.
Easy order and correct specifications for my Coleman 17B trailer. I received in prompt time with no issues. I matched it with my trailer and it fits perfect.
Thanks,

by:

Used them on a boat trailer for the first time today and it didn’t last 10 miles and blew one of the tires. The rim was shot as soon as o noticed. Have had them in my trailer stored until now. Maybe had them 2 months. Would not recommend these tires if they are going to blow like this. Glad the pieces of tire also runnier my boats paint! Great time! Thanks for selling trash tire and rim packages! Out $XXX and stranded on the side of the road……..

  • Tire Pressure Recommendation for 1996 Holiday Rambler Aluma Lite
Special trailer tires should be inflated to their maximum air pressure. The value for the maximum air pressure should be listed along with the value for the maximum load on the tire's sidewall. These values will usually designate the maximum load at a maximum psi. For example, if the tire is rated at 1,610 lbs maximum at 65 psi, the tire can carry 1,610 lbs of weight if the air pressure is at the maximum of 65 psi. At the maximum air pressure, the tires will perform and wear best, and get...

  • What Info Is Needed to Upgrade a 15 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire to a 16 inch Wheel and Tire
Assuming you have the clearance for a slightly larger wheel and tire on your cattle trailer all you really need to know is the bolt pattern of the wheels you currently have so that you can get a wheel that will bolt right up. If you are unsure of the bolt pattern you have on your wheels check out the FAQ article I attached that shows how to determine this. Your trailer will need to have an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern or a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern to go with a 16 inch wheel and tire combo...

  • Should I Upgrade the Tires on my Fifth Wheel Trailer to a Higher Load Range/Size
There is no way to use a tire designed to fit a 16 inch rim on a 15 inch rim. Your best option will be to determine the total weight of your trailer when it is loaded and ready to tow and then pick a wheel/tire combination that has enough capacity. The part # AM10303 is the same size as what you have in a Load Range E and it has a 2,830 lbs at 80 psi. If that has enough capacity for your trailer then that would be all that you need. If you need more capacity you will need to upgrade to...

  • Can 16.5 Inch Trailer Wheels and Tires be Replaced with 16 Inch Trailer Wheels and Tires
You can go from a 16.5 to 16 inch trailer tire and wheel provided that the tire and wheel combos you go with have the capacity for the trailer. The highest capacity 16 inch combo that we have is going to be # TA76FR rated for 4,400 pounds at 110 psi. • Could a 15 in Trailer Wheel and Tire be Replaced by a 16 inch Wheel and Tire
Most likely yes, but it really depends on how tight the clearances are on your trailer to know if you could fit a taller (by 2-3 inches) and wider tire. Another thing is your hub will need to have either a 6 on 5-1/2 inch or 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern for one of our 16 inch tire and rim combos to fit. If you are unsure of your bolt pattern check out the link I attached on determining bolt patterns to the right. For a wheel and tire combo for if you have a 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern...

The 8.75-16.5 bias tire is not a trailer tire. For a tire to be rated for use on a trailer, the tire will need to have a ST (special trailer) prefix before the tire size or an LT prefix after the tire size. You might want to check if the 8.75-16.5 tire size is the correct tire size that is recommended for your trailer. You will also want to check the weight capacity of your trailer or axle. I have attached a helpful article that explains how to measure your wheel to determine the bolt hole pattern. If your trailer is being used on the road a lot then radial tires can be the best tire because they tend to run cooler than bias-ply tires. Ideally, you'll want the combined capacity of your tires to meet or exceed the GVWR of your trailer.
