Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Delivery was terrible.

Recently received the wheel/tire units and they are exactly as described on the website. Shipping was faster than I expected and each wheel/tire was boxed individually and arrived in excellent condition. I have since placed an order for additional parts needed to rejuvenate my utility trailer.
Very pleased with etrailer.

Painless process wish I had done this sooner for my trailer needs.

Tire is fine but rim looks like a unsupervised 2 year old got hold of a spray can and painted it. The galvanizing has awful runs. I know this is isn't the most expensive tire/wheel but does anyone take any pride anymore?

by:

My wife & I are leaving fo our Western NY Home traveling on Rte 75. Driving at 70 mph, so these radial 12", 8 ply trailer tires should hold up for this 13 hr drive. I'm always worried towing and 12" wheels heat up at high speeds. Really glad you had these tires & wheels in stock & able to ship them in a couple days. I had 4 year old bias ply C rated tires on my trailer but I didn't trust them for the speed & distance I'd be traveling.

by:

Second tire/wheel combo from etrailer! First spare became replacement for a major blowout rolling down I95 NY to Florida. South Carolina I95 so bad, parts are coming off semi trucks. Missed with my truck, but cut tire down to wheel on tread and both side walls. Having the first etrailer spare ready was super! I did try to find the Karrier tire locally, but ended up back at etrailer. Fast delivery, great price and now with a new spare! Great job you guys.

by:

Very happy with yet another purchase from etrailer.com. Product and timely delivery are great.

by:

I ordered this product on Thursday and was told it would be delivered on Monday, to my surprise it came two days early and was delivered on Saturday!. The tire and wheel are exactly what I needed. I’m very satisfied with e trailer and I will definitely use this company again.

by:

The tires seem fine however the galvanized wheels look like absolute garbage to be quite honest. On the website the finish looks great. What I received looks like crap. There is a coating of something all over both sides of the wheels that will not come off. The wheels look used.I don't understand how anyone would have thought it was OK to mount the tires on these wheels and actually send them out to a customer. I am sure more than one person had to see these before they were shipped out.

by:

Tires and rims are exactly what I expected, great quality. While some folks have commented about the rims finish to me it's not a big deal, anything dipped to galvanize will show a small amount of running. Customer service was top notch, I received emails when the item shipped and was due to arrive, which was earlier than expected. I will definitely be ordering from etrailer again.

by:

I needed tires so I went with these. Galvanized wheels are durable, carefree, and look good, especially with the etrailer chrome lug nuts that I added. Mounting took a bit more to snug than I expected. Towing with new radial tires is a double, maybe triple wow. Really smooth ride and towing seemed effortless. I averaged a wee bit more than a 3 mile per gallon mileage increase towing empty and about half that towing with a load. Makes you wonder why I put off getting new tires. etrailer made this easy and the support helped me resolve my concerns about keeping the bias ply spare. All in all, a great transaction, a great product, and an easy ordering process. Could not have got them any faster if I purchased them locally. You can tell that I'm happy..

by:

The package was on time and exactly what I ordered. Etrailer staff is very knowledgeable and easy to work with. I keep coming back to them for my camper and boat trailer needs for these reasons.

by:

Bought to use as a spare on my boat trailer. I did have an opportunity to use it last Fall, and it pulled quite nice. Even though it didn’t match the tread or wear on the tire on the opposite side, it worked great. Seemed to hold pressure over the winter without any issues, no cracking or rot that is visible

  • Can Trailer Tire Size 205/75R15 be Replaced with 225/75R15
Yes, you could easily upgrade from your 205 series trailer tire and wheel to a 225 series like the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM32468 that you referenced. This has the correct bolt pattern that you'd need too based on your pictures as well. The added width will also help prevent the tire from sinking in too.

The Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Aluminum Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM32479 is one wheel and tire combination, so you will want one of these and then 4 of the Aluminum HWT Star Mag Trailer Wheel - 15" x 6" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM22653 and 4 valve stem # AM20904. These will work well with your 4 new tires and give you a spare as well. I just went off the part you asked about, so if you want another style wheel, let me know.

  • Should Larger Tires and Wheels be Used to Go Camping on the Beach with a Trailer
Ultimately you want the most surface area on sand so if you have the means to upgrade your tire/wheel size then go for it! What you need to do prior to purchasing new tires/wheels is to go out and check on your current set to see what kind of clearances you have. You want to have at least 4" of clearance above your tires (for suspension travel) and then at least 2" of clearance between the sidewall of your tires and your trailer frame. With all of that being said, the largest tire you'd...

To get any bigger and wider you will have to move to a larger wheel and tire package. I have listed a couple 15" options below next to your 13" that you are asking about. These are all mounted on wheels already for added convenience. Be sure to inspect for how much clearance you have with larger tires as well and if you have any concerns about the larger sizes let me know what clearances you currently have. You will want at minimum 1" of clearance with the new tires throughout the suspension...

  • Recommended Spare Wheel And Tire For Trailer With 7.60-15 Tires
I was able to find that the 7.60-15 tires you have on your tear trailer cross reference to the 225/75/15 tires. With that said we have quite a few options with the 225/75/15 tire and a 15" wheel with 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. The most important thing is to find if your current tires are bias ply or radials, and make the spare the same type. Mixing radials and bais ply tires causes a very unstable ride. If your tires are bias ply I recommend taking a look at the Loadstar ST225/75D15...

  • Why Does Bolt Pattern Matter When Choosing Disc Brakes
The reason that it is important to note the bolt pattern (along with the bearing sizes) is exactly that; to make sure that your current wheels fit properly on the Disc Brake Kit # T4843300. You are correct that a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern is actually the better route to go. It is more common and will be much easier to replace than a 5 on 4-1/4" bolt pattern wheel. As long as your inner bearing is # L68149, your outer bearing is # L44649, and your grease seal has an inner diameter of 1.719"...

  • Radial vs Bias Tire for a Boat Trailer
The difference between Radial and Bias tires is that Radials will run cooler than Bias (making them last longer for highway applications) and they have more flexibility for better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. Bias tires have a stiffer sidewall which makes them ideal for off-road use like on a farm. Since most people transport their boats on the highway I recommend going with a Radial tire. The other thing you will want to pay attention to is the type of wheel that...

The capacity for the tire is all that really matters so it could still work for you as long as it's 2,050 lbs at 75 psi capacity is adequate for your setup. • Taller Tire Size Recommendation for Size 205/75-14 to Gain Inch of Ground Clearance
We have a taller tire size than your 205/75-14 that will fit your current wheel which is tire size 215/75-14 but you'd really only gain about a 1/4 inch of additional clearance so it would not be you ideal solution. What you'd really need is to go to the 15 inch trailer wheel tire size 225/75-15 as this will give you a little over an inch of additional ground clearance. The closest setup we'd have is the part # AM32468 which comes with this tire size and a galvanized spoke wheel.

The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM32468 are not balanced as trailer wheel and tire combos are generally not balanced. Typically, there's no difference that can be felt and due to the rougher suspension of trailers the weights typically fall off.

For a tire in the ST225/75R15 size on a steel galvanized rim with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the part # AM32468.
