Increasing Trailer Wheel and Tire Size on a 2003 Pace 6 X 12 Foot Trailer

Question:

I have a 03 6X12 Pace trailer that came with standard st205/75d14 tires and wheels. I want to replace them with the Karrier ST225/75R15 tire and 15X6 wide wheel package that you carry because of its higher load capacity. Besides wheel rub which shouldnt be a problem any you see other issues?

Your ST205/75d14 Trailer tire is approximately 26.3 inches tall and 7.8 inches wide overall by my calculations (see Measuring a trailer tire link). The Karrier ST225/75R15, item # AM32459, is 28.4 inches tall and 8.9 inches wide overall. If you decide to change to the larger wheel and tire you will need to be sure you get the proper lug pattern (see link for determining wheel bolt pattern) and that the larger size of the tire will not rub the fender on the inside, outside or the top of the tire.

When using ST (special trailer) tires the air pressure in the tire should be set at the maximum pressure. In the case of the # AM32664, the tire should be ran at 65 PSI. ST Trailer tires have thicker side walls for carrying the weight required of them and running them at lower pressures will cause them to heat up and fail more quickly.

I normally do not recommend going up in tire load capacity to solve weight carrying issues. Changing the tire size, or capacity will not increase the hub, bearing, spring or axle capacity of the trailer and will cause one of those components to fail rather than the tire on the trailer.
