An example of sag on the rear suspension under a heavy load.

The resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with the trailer's suspension to keep it level, which improves driving performance for your vehicle. When hauling heavy loads, you will often see the rear of the vehicle sag, while the front end raises up. In this case, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but more of the vehicle's weight as well. Since less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making significantly less contact with the road, reducing traction, which decreases the vehicle's steering and stopping performance.

Under pressure, hollow rubber springs are designed to progressively support the suspension.

The Timbren system has a custom bracket that will be bolted onto the trailer frame above the axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits one inch above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape provides increased resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping the trailer level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's or passenger's side of the trailer. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying without Timbren SES

Timbren Suspension systems help compensate for all of the probable causes of trailer sway from unbalanced loads to gusts of wind from passing vehicles. Installing Timbren will make your trailer track better behind your vehicle and provide a safer more comfortable towing experience.

An example hauling a heavy load with and without Timbren.

When hauling heavy loads, the resistance from Timbren's hollow rubber springs will work with the trailer's suspension to raise the trailer's ride height. This is will take additional strain off of the hitch components and help the trailer ride easier.

Product is as described, installation was easy & performed as expected.

I ordered these to help reduce the rolling (tilting) of my 18' travel trailer that I use off-road. Also, I am hoping it will absorb some of the shock. I have added some photos of before and after installation. The installation was simple, I used 5/16" sheet metal screws instead of the bolts supplied. Time will tell if they work as expected.
As you can see from the photos, I have previously added an Etrailers shock mount kit to my axle. I made custom lower mounts that I welded to the axle and used the supplied upper mounts.

  • SumoSpring or Timbren for 5x8 Karavan Utility Trailer
For your application I recommend checking out the SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs # TSS-107-40 because they are designed for an overslung leaf spring setup and SumoSprings tend to offer more forgiving support so it's more comfortable. This kit is rated for 3K - 5K axles and is 5" tall but SumoSprings has told us in the past that if one of their springs are too tall it's perfectly okay to cut it to the height you need and that won't affect the performance of the spring. Your photos didn't...

  • Recommended Trailer Bump Stop and Suspension Enhancement for Tandem Axle Trailer
The amount of space needed is going to vary depending on the spring that you use. If you use the Timbren Trailer Suspension Enhancement System Light-Duty Trailers 1,000 lbs # TTRA1702, those springs are only 2-3/4" tall so you can get away with fairly minimal clearance. The other option would be the SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs w/ Line Relocation Bracket - Single Axle - 3K to 5K - Underslung # TSS-106-40 for underslung axles or the SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs w/ Line Relocation...

The width of the clamp on portion of the SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs w/ Line Relocation Bracket part # TSS-107-40 is likely not to fit the thinner upper plate on the lighter 2,000 lb. axle. These helper springs are designed for 3K to 5K axles. Instead, go with the Timbren Trailer Suspension Enhancement System Light-Duty Trailers 1,000 lbs part # TTRA1702 these will attach to the frame instead of the springs and have you in good shape. • Troubleshooting Tire Rubbing at Full Suspension on 2004 Coachmen Viking Tent Trailer
Other than flipping your axles, the only way to change the ride height of your trailer is to change the hangers unless your trailer suspension is really bad and has been very overloaded. It sounds like you research things like axle capacity so I'd be shocked if your suspension was that bad without you being very aware. If there is so much movement that it has caused the tires to damage the fenders then something is not quite right. The Timbren springs like # TTRA1702 are designed to be installed on a trailer that has a suspension system that is in good working order so making sure yours is good would be the first step. • How to Improve a Rough and Bumpy Ride on a 2,000 Pound Fruefoff Trailer
I do have some suggestions. First off, make sure that the tongue weight is not too heavy or light. Typically tongue weight should be 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. A tongue weight that is too heavy would cause the rear end of the trailer to be more bouncy. Getting the trailer loaded properly will be the first thing you can do. As far as aftermarket suspension enhancement using a system like # TTRA1702 would help but it is only rated for 1,000 pounds for the set. All the...

What happens to slipper springs is that over time they elongate and flatten out, particularly if your springs are considerably older. Based on that the closest slipper spring we have that could work is the 3-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Radius End for 1,500-lb Trailer Axles - 24-5/8" Long # SP-178275, which would work if you had a tandem-axle trailer. I'm not necessarily sure that the air pressure of the tires is the main culprit here since the smaller tires have a higher air pressure to compensate for the lower capacity; you could absolutely go with a larger tire like the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM3S140 to give yourself a higher capacity tire that doesn't require as much air. Sometimes you'll see this caused by using shackles that are too long, but in this case it's probably safe to assume that this is being caused by worn out leaf springs. If you need help finding replacement springs, just let me know the length of your current springs and I can make a recommendation for your 3500-lb axles.
