How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Review of Dutton-Lainson Trailer Jack - Goldenrod Swivel Sidewind With Foot - DL22686

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this Dutton-Lainson-Goldenrod Easy Swivel Sidewind Trailer Jack with Foot. This Goldenrod Swivel Utility Jack is going to let you raise and lower the tongue of your trailer so you can connect and disconnect your trailer coupler to and from your hitch ball. And this jack features a lift capacity of 2,000 pounds. This is made here in the USA, and the outer and inner tubes are constructed of heavy gauge steel.

The heavy duty ACME screw, and miter gears are totally enclosed in the outer tube to help protect it from sand and dirt. And the jack itself is protected by a nice matte powder coated black finish. Now this does have a swivel design that's going to let you swing the jack up for storage along the trailer frame, and then you can bring it back down for use. And as you can see here, this does include a convenient, easy to operate half inch spring loaded pole pin that's going to secure and release this jack. This is a weld-on bracket that is included here.

And you can see when I pull the pin to release the bracket, how the bracket itself swivels independently from the jack. So when this bracket is welded to your trailer jack or to your trailer rather, you're just going to pull the pin, and then you can rotate that jack up in a stowed position, and then easily bring it down, bring it back down for use. Now you'll notice that our bracket has four holes in it, and that's going to allow our pin to engage in whatever hole is going to work best for your particular application whether you want the jack facing towards the front or if you want it facing towards the back pointing towards the rear of the trailer. So again, very easy, very convenient to use. The pin is spring loaded.

Looking at the measurement of the bracket itself, we are four and a half inches square and this sidewind handle has an extra heavy screw drive, and it's ergonomic. It has an ergonomic molded handle grip with a textured surface. So this is gonna be very easy to hold onto, especially if it's damp weather. And let me flip this over here, just so you can see our foot plate. The foot plate is welded on, so it's not gonna go anywhere.

It's gonna be very durable and strong. Looking at the length, we're sitting right at seven inches long. The width four inches wide, so you've got a nice wide base there. And then let me make sure that I have this fully retracted, and just give you some other measurements here. I want to give you the bracket height, when this is fully retracted. So I think I can do this with my ruler here. Measuring from the base that this is sitting on all the way to the center of our bracket. As you can see, we're sitting right at 11 and a half inches when it's fully retracted. Now when you have this fully extended, you're gonna get a travel of 10 inches. So when this is fully extended, again from the base to the center of our bracket, this is gonna be sitting at 21 and a half inches on that fully extended height. And then the overall height of this jack, when it's fully retracted from the top to the bottom, we're sitting right at 18 inches tall when this is fully retracted overall. Well that's gonna wrap up our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.

This double wheel jack was the only one i could find that would replace the jack on my Ranger Bass Boat, The Ranger has a welded swivel mount and with somecareful thought it is a relacement for that jack using thr welded portion of the original.

by:

FYI: Received the jack and mounted it using the existing hardware. When I went to lock the jack  I discovered that the locking pin on the 1500 dual wheel jack is 1/2 inch and the pin from the old 1000 winch is much smaller. Now I have to disassemble and make the holes bigger to accept the pin. It would have been helpful if that was pointed out. Hoping the holes line up.

The overall build appears hefty.Tilt works well and stays at 90 degrees when supporting 3 snowmobiles on my dual axle trailer. My 13 year old granddaughter can one hand the crank when raising the trailer with the Jack. Not sure how well the double wheels will work when pushing the trailer in the garage to store but so far no problems. One upgrade they could do is us a better quality handle on the crank. This Jack came assembled!!Handle and wheels on.Quick install!!!

by:

I ordered this to replace the jack on my 16 year old trailer. I did not use the weld on bracket because it was an exact fit. The jack is very easy to raise and lower. I like how the handle folds closed and has a friction lock to hold in folded position. The BEST Part is MADE IN USA.

Purchased to replace the broken jack on a 1997 Coleman Destiny Taos pop-up I am rebuilding. I chose to use this bolt on on the opposite side of the original welded jack so I can convert the old jack into a swinging standing foot, or replace it later with an auxiliary weld o jack. Extremely easy installation for this jack. The method of attachment allows me to move the jack forward or backward on the tongue as I see fit. Crank is smooth and easy. Spring-loaded pullout bolt allows for very easy swivel. The original jack had a single wheel and was for a tongue weight of #500, while this new jack has a double wheel and allows for a tongue weight of #1500. As a result, moving the trailer by hand is like pushing butter. As always, the folks at etrailer did a great job of providing information, photos, and videos, to allow me to make the proper choice of item, and they did a great job in contacting me and shipping this to me.

by:

The jack works well, mounted to my trailer without issues. But on the second trip with the trailer, the cap on top fell off. I have had a difficult time finding a replacement cap and have defaulted to duct tape.

by:

I ordered a dual wheel 1,500 jack and received a single wheel 1,000# jack. When I notified etrailer, they made me feel like it was my fault, they didn't have mine in stock....went to Northern Tool and purchased what I needed. Still have not received my refund :-(

by:

The jack broke on our bear pontoon trailer. Tried looking number up on broken jack and couldn't find anything number wise to match. Called e trailer and asked them if they could cross reference the number somehow. And found a match that was verified by the manufacturer. Thanks for making it easy.

by:

My new Dutton-Lainson Tongue Jack from erailer has eliminated the potential problem of receiving an unwanted tailgate ding. This unit is heavy duty with a 1,000 pound tongue rating - not some $35 throw-away unit that you usually get from Big Box stores.
Installation on my new Karavan Utility Trailer was easy enough, taking no more than 30 minutes, and that's without even reading the installation instructions!
The D-L tongue jack provides trailer tongue quick drop, as well as high quality worm gear internals.
Thanks etrailer! Satisfied Customer

An outstanding piece of quality equipment. The wheel swivels smoothly under all conditions. 10x better than the cheaper alternatives.

by:

Super fast delivery. Excellent service would highly recommend ordering anything from this site

by:

Fits as needed
My old single wheel jack
was not enough
I have a sand car in the trailer it needed to be well made. It is. Time will be the true test.

by:

Fast shipping

by:

First of all, despite the typical delays we're all experiencing these days the people at Etrailer sent updates. Communication is a good thing! I installed the jack on my Shorelander trailer and had to drill out the holes for the lock pin to accomodate the larger diameter pin as I had to use the factory mount on the trailer. Other than that, it mounted nicely and sure makes it easy to move the boat around. Well built jack, no more creaking and flexing!

by:

Perfect size. Moved the trailer yesterday using the trailer jack, so much easier.

by:

2nd jack, handle breaks within 2 months, don't waste your time. Go Fulton.

by:

Sturdy and well-made, easy to bolt on, made in the USA.

by:

This trailer jack is amazing. The turn handle mechanism works so well, very smooth. We really like the ability to turn it sideways so it stores horizontally when in transit. The wheel turns very easily, making positioning painless. We both love that it was made in the USA. Ordering was easy, and shipping was lightning fast. Will be back if we need any more accessories for our trailer.

by:

I purchased this item to replace an original trailer jack that was a little too "lightweight" for the trailer/boat. Based on the hardware included with this jack, I was pleased to learn this jack can be installed on virtually any trailer. I was not able to use the original trailer mount from the original jack, but WAS able to mount this one directly behind the original welded mount. This jack makes any raising/lowering and moving the boat/trailer much easier than the original AND much safer.

by:

etrailer is an excellent source for trailer parts. Great selection, easy straight forward ordering and fantastic delivery. The jack was an easy 5-minute installation and appears to be more robust than the factory installed jack. Operation is smooth and sturdy. The double wheel configuration makes moving the trailer easier and more stable than the single wheel configuration that came on the trailer originally.
