Video Transcript for Brophy D-Ring Tie-Down Anchor with Backing Plate Review

Randy: Hi, guys, it's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we've got a pretty interesting D-ring style tie-down. It's something I really like. Basically, the benefit that I see out of this that I don't see on a lot of the other ones, it doesn't kind of change the look of your trailer floor all of that much. Makes it a nice smooth floor when we're not in use. Essentially, this is going to be a D-ring attached to a 1/2" diameter bolt.Basically, when it's removed, as you can see, it gives us a nice flat floor.

We've just got a couple of our carriage bolts sticking up here that hold in that backing plate. I really like the idea of this. In my mind, having a nice flat smooth floor while you're loading and unloading stuff is a big deal. Anytime you're trying to get in and out of a trailer, especially like here where our door is, heavier items going over those, just kind of a pain. Using a dolly, the wheels can fall in.

The same thing can happen here. This is another tie-down system from Brophy. This one happens to be a recessed ring. I just moved, used this trailer to do it, and when moving the gun safe, we kind of got hung up on that. So.

with that being said, I would've really preferred having these in here. When we're ready to use it, we just take the large washer, place it down. Take our D-ring, place that in and we're just going to thread it into the backing plate that's there on the back side. We'll want to run that down all the way till it makes contact, but then we can back it off just slightly. We can turn this to this orientation or really on any angle that we want, basically within about a turn of being bottomed out. So that's bottomed out, and then we can back it off anywhere in this circle that we'd like to get our straps attached.

And once we've got our scraps attached, well, it's not going to loosen up any more than where it's at right now. I really like it. I think it's a nice, simple product, but very ingenious. It allows us a lot of adaptability and also allows us to not really ruin the look of our floor. Now, it has a 2,000 pound safe working load limit. So, if we we're to put one of these in each corner of our trailer and maybe put three of them going down to each side, it's going to give us tons of capacity. Just about anything we'd be able to fit in this enclosed trailer, we should be able to get strapped down properly. It also has the clear zinc finish on it. That finish is going to stand up really well against the elements. So if we we're to mount these on a standard flat bed trailer that's open to the elements, or maybe you've got other ideas of where you'd want something like this, maybe on a dock. Something where you don't have to constantly have something up there where you'll hit your foot on. It should last a very long time. The interior usable portion of the hook is going to be about 2-1/4". So even if we wanted to run a chain through there, wrap it back around and bind it to itself, it'll do a great job there. You can see we're about the same in the height coming off of our bracket about 2-1/4. Then outside to outside we're looking at about 3-1/4. That's a 1/2" diameter D-ring. Let me take it out. We'll measure that bolt length. Now with the washer on there, you can see we're at about 2-/3/4", so this shouldn't have any problem going through good thick plywood or even the 1-1/2" we generally see out of a standard two-by board. With it installed from the floor to the top edge here, we're looking at about 1-3/4". This system threads into a backing plate that has a weld nut in it. We've used four 3/8 carriage bolts down through our floor to secure that up. The hardware isn't included, so keep that in mind. In a wooden floor like this, I highly recommend a carriage bolt. If you're going to be going into aluminum or steel, probably a hex bolt would be better. To begin our installation, we're going to start with our backing plate. We want to decide where inside we want our anchor to be. We're going to be using ours right here, so we can use it either for a UTV, ATV or to work with our E-Track here to strap something smaller down. Once you find the position, I'm going to mark that main center nut using that backing plate. That's gonna give me the spot in which I want to drill my hole. Now, this is a 1/2" diameter bolt that has to pass down through there. So you want to do 1/2" or maybe 1/8" larger. Then we'll just get that drill. Now we're ready to take our large flat washer. We're going to place that down and over our hole, place in our D-ring, and we'll head around underneath. Now we can thread our plate up and on our bolt. You can see it's kind of turning my bolt there, so what I'll need is somebody inside holding it. But basically I want to bring this to where it's all the way up, and we have it looking pretty square. Now to secure our plate on the bottom side, I'm going to be using carriage bolts since we're dealing with a wood floor. That square will sink down in, and it'll hold our bolts in place. If you're going to be mounting this to a steel or an aluminum surface, you could do carriage bolts if you want, but the heads will stick up a little bit. Maybe a hex head bolt would be the better option for you there. At any rate, we're going to use 3/8 diameter hardware, and basically I'm going to use this as a template. We're just going to drill up through it, and then we'll drop our bolts down through the top. Now, we'll just drop those four in from the top. We're going to go down to the bottom. We'll place on our hardware and then gently tighten them down to suck these down to the floor. Now, we'll place our hardware on there. Now, since we are going up against a steel plate, it's not required that we use the flat washer. I just had them handy, so I'm throwing them on there, but with that backing plate like it is, you could just use a lock nut, or a lock washer rather, and your nut. Now, we'll just gently bring them down and suck those carriage head bolts right down into that wood floor. All in all, I think this is going to be an excellent tie-down solution. I rate it pretty highly. We deal with a lot of the different rings around here. We've installed probably 50 different kinds on this particular trailer, and this is one of my favorites. Now, the one negative I see about it. When this isn't installed, you do have the potential of losing it. So if you're not going to have it stored in a box or somewhere, if you're not a person that keeps track of stuff very well, maybe it's not the best solution. Because if you lose this, you have to pick up another one from us here at etrailer.com. We do sell these separately. That way if you do happen to misplace one or lose one, you don't have to buy the whole backing plate and everything. There's also going to be a 1/2" diameter hole in the floor that goes all the way down to the bottom. You could easily get a 1/2" diameter bolt and thread it down in there, but I really don't think that's a big concern. I do want you to be aware of it. Those are the only two slight negatives I see. All in all, I think it serves a great purpose. It's really handy to have, and I think it'll help a lot of you guys out.

Still working great a year later!

All the pieces have good welds and paint. It may be a small amount of warpage from heating the nuts or just a little mar on the threads of the bolts but you cannot screw any of the four in more than an inch before it requires a pipe wrench. I had pictured that you would be able to just spin them in and out by hand. I feel like after they've been used a few times this will probably resolve. I think these are going to be so much better than the recessed D-rings in my old trailer. I swear those things were made to gather every spec of dirt in the trailer and put it in those cups for you to clean out. Also the rings on these are larger than traditional D-rings so if you needed to run a strap through them instead of hook to them this could be done easily. I only purchased four but probably will purchase a couple more later for mid mount after seeing these.

I bought two BP1D mounting plates for the Brophy tie-down anchors. My 6’ x 10’ utility trailer will be used to haul a motorcycle or lawn tractor and I need to place rear tie-downs in different locations to secure the rear. The setup for the motorcycle is especially tricky and are located towards the front of the trailer. A second location for other equipment are set in the back. These Brophy anchors are ideal as the mounting plates are under the trailer deck. The heavy duty eyelets that come with DR1S (purchased separately) are out of the way and threaded into the mounting plate when ready to strap equipment in place. I really am happy with the cost effective way to have multiple tie-down locations

Watched video. shows carriage bolts so items don't catch and yet the plate comes with round bolts do i bought 16 carriage bolts to use for this and have no use for them. I wish if hardware doesn't come included you all would update items with size hardware. Brophy site shows carriage bolts when i went there to see what size bolts i needed. Your photo here on this review shows round holes, the video shows and names carriage bolts and brophy's site shows carriage bolts.

Thank you for your review. The D-Ring does not come with hardware. The mounting holes are 38 holes. You can use bolts or wood screws depending on what you are installing this on.

A very versatile tie down point, exactly what I was looking for. This tie down has an excellent coating that should last many years to come. I have used etrailer for many, many purchases over the last few years and am never disappointed. Their selection and customer service is top notch. I only wish it came with hardware, but I'll live!

  • Size of Bolts for Brophy D-Ring Tie-Down Anchor
The bolt that comes with the Brophy D-Ring Tie-Down Anchor with Backing Plate # DR1S has a diameter of 9/16 inches, so this would be the approximate size of the hole in the backing plate as well. I have added a link to a video review for you to check out of the Tie-Down Anchor with Backing Plate # DR1S.

  • Does Brophy D-Ring Tie-Down Anchor # DR1S Come with Backing Plate
The Brophy D-Ring Tie-Down Anchor # DR1S actually comes with it's own backing plate. The black portion of it mounts under the surface and then using the included hardware you'd attach the D-ring on top of the surface. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Can I Use D-Ring with Mounting Plate to Anchor a Truck Bed Camper
I can't advise you to use something like the # DR1S to anchor a truck bed camper in this case, but I do have a solution for you. While they may seem strong enough, they're not designed for this use and the stresses put on by a truck bed camper. The best way to anchor a truck bed camper on your 2015 Ram 3500 is to use proper truck bed camper anchor points like the # TLD2130 and # TLD3109, which are designed to fit the 6-1/2 Foot Bed - Single Rear Wheels - without board or step underneath...

  • Installing The Brophy D-Ring Tie-Down Anchor With Backing Plate
I attached the demonstration video for the Brophy D-Ring Tie-Down Anchor with Backing Plate - Bolt On - 1/2" Diameter - 2,000 lbs # DR1S that you were looking at. In the video you can see that the bracket does indeed have round holes, not square. We do demonstrate the installation with carriage bolts (not included) that sink into the wood floor, however, we also mention that you should use hex bolts if using the bracket on metal floor since carriage bolts wouldn't work well for metal flooring.
