Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - C40088 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the 2-5/16" hitch ball from Curt. This ball provides a connection point for your trailer's coupler. It's going to feature steel construction with a raw machine finish. The shank features a coarse thread design so that's going to be five threads per inch. It does come with the lock washer and the nut for installation. The nut, from edge to edge, flat to flat, measure 2-15/16".

The ball diameter is a 2-5/16" ball. When it comes to the dimension of the shank, starting with the diameter, measuring edge to edge, it's going to give us a diameter of 2". The length of that shank, from the bottom of the ball platform to the end of the threads, it's going to be about 3-1/2" long, and this ball provides a capacity of 30,000-lbs. That's going to do it for today's look at the 2-5/16" hitch ball from Curt.

I needed the ball in 5 days so I chose 3 day shipping and got it within 24 hrs of order time. I had been looking for a ball like this all day online and couldn't find it until I got on e trailers web site, awesome experience.

by:

We had a ball get loose a egg the hole. I redrilled the hole to a 2” and installed this one with a 2” shank. Perfect fit. Fixed our problem

by:

Perfect! I took my truck to three different trailer/hitch "stores" here in the Tulsa area. No one could help me with the ginormous threaded thing in the bed of my truck. All I got was "Nope, we ain't got nutin like that there. That's and old system; older an' the truck is". Went online here, found what I needed, ordered it and it was here in just a few days! Thank you, etrailer! It fits perfectly and is exactly what I needed!

The product is what I needed. But the customer service was second to none. I needed this particular sized ball for my fifth wheel. The RV dealer did not carry it, they suggested a competing online company. To order from that company I needed to become a member. I ordered this hitch, it was sent the next day, and I got this in two days. In that time frame the other company just got back to me about setting up a membership. I am not a dealer, so I don't want to be forced to a membership. Thank you etailer for making the process simple and faster than my "prime" member ship.

The ball I ordered was heavy-duty and exactly what I needed. It was shipped right away. I am very happy with the product and the service I received.

Works great. Especially with my Anderson hitch. You couldnt tell there was 26,000 lbs. back there.

Bought this Class I hitchball because the rest of my installation is Class I. Made sense at the time, but the 2” Class II ball is a tighter fit on the U-Haul trailers I rent, and that is probably better for the inevitable rattling. In the end this Curt ball is both good and cheap, and that is a winning combination for me.

by:

I bought this 2" hitch ball because I needed a little bit longer shank for my Toyota Tacoma. The etrailer service was very prompt and shipped in a bomb-proof box.

by:

Worked like a charm and the team at trailer was very helpful in finding the right solution. Traveled across the country hauling a trailer with my SUV and this fit perfectly.

by:

This is the perfect hitch ball to match the capacity of the hitch on my Class A Motor Home, giving me a margin of safety for the entire towing system when pulling my car / dolly.

by:

Not all 2" Hitch Balls are the same. I didn't realize until I started comparing them, but based on the size of the shank, the towing capacity can vary wildly. This 2" ball is rated at 10,000 lbs. I could not find a 2" ball anywhere locally that was rated this high, and it was an excellent price here.

by:

Still working great after a year mounted on our Draw-Tite 4285 Ball-Mount/draw bar. Be aware that it may require professional help to mount it to the required 450 lbs of torque. I managed to use a "cheater bar" plus torque wrench to do it myself with 75 lbs of arm strength applied to the wrench, as shown in pics. I had to support our hitch on blocks, since 450 lbs of force exceeds our hitch's 350-lb rating.

by:

I just received it, and don't have experience with it, but just the perception of the finish tells me it will be a high quality ball hitch that will last for many years, and still look good.

  • Trailer Hitch Ball That Is 2-5/16" With A 2" Shank
    Yes we do offer a 2-5/16" ball with a 2" shank. I recommend the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 2" Diameter x 3-1/2" Long Shank - Machined - 30,000 lbs Item # C40088.

  • Tips for Getting a Nut Loose From a Ball on a Ball Mount
Tightening a ball to a ball mount does require a substantial amount of foot pounds of torque. The lock washer puts further tension on it. What you can do is put the ball mount in the shank side ways and use a special wrench for the large nut to get enough leverage to break the nut free. If it was cross threaded, you will not want to re-use the ball due to thread damage. Some penetrating oil might also help. Let it soak in for 15 minutes. Curt makes a wrench, # C20001, if the ball you have...

  • Correct Torque Spec For The Curt 30K Hitch Ball C40088
There is definitely a typo in Curts instructions. I noticed that their website also says 4550 lbs. So this must have been entered incorrectly by someone at some point. The correct torque spec for the nut on the # C40088 is 450 ft lbs. I confirmed this with my contact at Curt. Torquing something like this to 4550 ft lbs would not be physically possible. That would be way beyond anything any human could achieve. So unless those instructions were written by the Greek god Hercules, it is certainly...

  • Curt # 40088 Hitch Ball Threads Per Inch
I reached out to my contact at Curt and he confirmed the threads on the Curt hitch ball # C40088 is standard coarse threading of 4.5 threads per inch just like the B&W hitch ball # BWHB94009 you referenced.

  • Gooseneck Hitch Ball With 2 Inch Diameter Shank
For your 2 inch diameter shank we only have the coarse thread option for the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball. If you can make that work, we have the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 2" Diameter x 3-1/2" Long Shank - Raw - 30,000 lbs # BWHB94009 and the similar Curt # C40088.

  • Installation of a Curt Trailer Hitch Ball with a Round Shank, # C40088
What you can do is place the ball in the ball mount and thread the lock nut and nut on the shank hand tight. Then place the ball upside down in a bench vise, gripping the somewhere below the ball so you do not scrap up the ball. Then you can use a wrench to tighten the nut to the specifications indicated on the tag for the ball.

  • Available 2-5/16-Inch Hitch Balls with 2-Inch Diameter Shank
We do have two 2-5/16-inch hitch balls that have a 2-inch diameter shank that is also 3-1/2-inches long; both appear on the linked page. B&W part # BWHB94009 that you referenced is one and the other is Curt item # C40088. Please note that both of these use a coarse thread, either 4-1/2 or 5 threads per inch; both also include a matching lock washer and nut. All balls in the 2-5/16-inch size appear on the linked page and some of these have fine threads but the two above are the only ones...

  • Torque Spec to Install Curt Hitch Ball # C40088
The torque spec you found on Curt's site is a typo. It should be 455 ft lbs of torque to tighten the nut of the hitch ball # C40088 and not 4,550 ft lbs.

  • What 4-1/2 Thread Per Inch Coarse Thread Hitch Balls Are Available?
The 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # C40088 and # BWHB94009 are the only hitch balls we carry with the 4-1/2" thread per inch coarse thread. These will not have the riser ball like you are looking for. These balls have a 2" diameter shank. For a riser ball you would have to look at the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball w/ 1" Rise # BWHB94005 or 2-5/16" Hitch Ball w/ 2" Rise # BWHB94006. These have fine threads 12 per inch and only a 1-1/2" diameter shank.
