Video Transcript for Buyers Products Stake Pocket Spare Tire Carrier Review

Hi everyone. Aiden here with the etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Buyer's Product Stake Pocket Spare Tire Carrier. Now, this is designed to fit with most spare tires with bolt patterns, five on four and a half, five on five, six on five and a half, and eight on six and a half. Depending also on the diameter of the holes that you've got on your spare tire, whether it's five eights or half inch, it's gonna come with all the hardware required to fit through those and attach the tire. Now, as far as the stake pockets that it's gonna work with, you also wanna make sure you've got your measurements right there.

So, for the carrier it's going to be three and a half inches wide and it's going to be an inch and a half deep. So, just go to the stake pockets on your trailer and make sure that it'll fit in there. And then it secures in the stake pocket with a plate on the bottom. We'll see that a little bit more in the install process but that's how it's held in place. The carrier is going to be angled which helps get us more ground clearance and clearance away from the side of the trailer.

On our application today our stake pockets are located directly below our railing here and that does present a problem with mounting. But luckily the carrier gets the tire up seven and a half inches from the stake pocket and out six and a half inches from the side of the trailer. So, that's giving us good ground clearance at the very bottom and clearance from our railing on the side. And as far as the installation process goes it's gonna be very straightforward, pretty much just drop it in the stake pocket, secure it, and add your tire. Let's go through that process now.

Starting off the installation we're gonna take the spare tire carrier and slide it into one of our stake pockets. It's not gonna pass all the way through. It'll bottom out right at this weld point here and that's where our plate and our longer bolt come into play. In the very bottom of the carrier we're gonna have a threaded hole and that's where that bolt will thread into. So, popping this back into the stake pocket that plate will go on the outside of the stake pocket to clamp it in.

The bolt will pass up through and we just need to find that threaded hole with it and start to thread it in place. Now, depending on the way your stake pocket is oriented you might be able to get the plate on this way or that way with the lip facing up. But for ours, we're gonna actually have the lip facing down and that's okay because it is wider than the stake pocket overall. So, once this is tightened down it will be preventing the carrier from popping back up through the stake pocket and that's all we really need it to do. So, I'll thread it in by hand and tighten it down with our socket once it's in by hand. (tool operating) And once that's tightened down with a 14 millimeter socket you're ready to attach your tire. Everything's nice and stable. So, in your kit to mount up the spare tire you're gonna have two different bolts, one larger, the one on top here, and one's smaller. That'll correlate with different holes on the face of the spare tire carrier in this top corner and these two bottom ones, these are gonna be the larger holes that the larger pole will fit through. You can see the other holes, the two over here and the one up over here, that's not gonna fit through. That's where the smaller hardware comes into play. So depending on the bolt pattern of your spare tire, you'll use different holes. So, make sure you just use the right ones. Get your tire up into place and you'll see what you need. So, we just did a test fit on our tire and we're gonna be using the smaller hardware today. We're gonna go in the bottom most small hole on the right side and the very top hole on the left side. Gonna get those put in place, pop on the spare tire. And then once it's loosely in place, take the provided lug nuts, get 'em installed by hand, and then we can tighten them down with our socket. (tool operating) All right, and just like that, everything's fully installed and we're ready to hit the road. Overall, it's not my favorite way to carry a spare tire. It definitely gets the job done and certainly beats having it just loose in your trailer or not having one on hand at all. But I did notice that it's got a little bit more up and down movement than some other spare tire carriers. But, sometimes depending on the trailer you've got a stake pocket is the only option you do have. I might recommend looking into the Demco Stake Pocket Spare Tire Carrier. I've got a little more hands on with that one. And it's got some adjustment features and overall it just felt more solid and sturdy than this one. I think that really also comes down to your stake pocket and maybe how you're mounting it up. But regardless, it's gonna get the job done. It's gonna get your spare tire up and outta your trailer and securely on the side so it's ready to go for whenever you need it. Thanks for watching.

The trailer we bought did not come with a spare so this worked well to add one and have a place to mount it.

Works as good as it did on day one, good product.

by:

fit the trailer(Diamond C) pocket perfectly, strong powder-coating, great design.

by:

Great product. Does its job. Mounts sec ure

by:

Exactly as advertised. The multiple tire mounting holes make for a wide variety of wheels that this mount will work with. Easy solution if your are looking to add a spare tire mount.

by:

The stake pocket spare tire holder is well built and once the bolt securing it to the pocket is tight the tire does not move. Very secure!
It came with two size studs to fit multiple tire sizes. Quality item!

by:

Simple install and serves its purpose well. Finish is holding up well.

by:

Very nice attachment for a spare tire holder on my trailer.

by:

This carrier is solidly built and has a nice gloss finish that seems thick. The part that inserts into the stake pocket is longer than the pocket on my new trailer so the bracket could not tighten it into position. I managed to adapt a hard plastic spacer to fill the 1/2" gap and it works, for now. I will search for a more robust solution. Also, as others have mentioned, the lug bolts provided do not fit in the openings, even accepting that a tight friction fit is intended. I had to use a Dremel to ream out the opening as well as chamfer the bolt shoulders before using a heavy mallet in Hulk mode to get them seated. It should not have required that level of "encouragement". The first issue may be due to my trailer design, but the second issue can be fixed by the vendor.

It works, but is not ideal for the reasons I originally posted. Also, a lip around the post just below where the angled portion is attached for it to rest on the top of the stake pocket would make it even more stable.

by:

Did not fit stake pocket, had to grind of half the sides to make it fit, sticks out too far, needs to be redesigned in my opinion

by:

Works like it should. Still using it.

by:

It seems to be a good spare tire rack, but I had two problems. The first was that the studs would not even begin to fit into the holes corresponding to my wheel pattern. I was using the smaller holes and the smaller studs. I had to grind out the holes and still had to really drive the studs into the holes. Once set up on my trailer.. I found that my stake pockets are too close to the front rail and the rear fender, for my spare to fit on the rack and not hit the rail or fender... I can't use it as is... I will probably get someone to just weld the thing to my frame.....

It is not recommended to modify the bolt holes on this spare tire carrier. This spare tire carrier works for the following wheel bolt pattern: 5 on 4-1/2, 5 on 5, 6 on 5-1/2, and 8 on 6-1/2. Included with the carrier are 2 different press-in wheel stud sizes, 1/2 inch and 9/16 inches, and a bracket to secure the spare to this carrier. This carrier is intended to be use on 13 inch or larger trailer wheels and tires. Another option instead of having this welded to your trailer, would be to use a stake pocket like # PK-BSP and relocate this carrier to a more suitable location on your trailer. This stake pocket is a bolt on application but does not include the necessary 5/16 carriage bolts needed for installation.

I think you misunderstood my review.... I probably didnt explain it correctly My wheels are 5 on 4-12 x 15, and there were holes that lined up to my wheels. The problem was that the powder coat was too thick in the holes and wouldnt allow for the studs to even begin to seat into those holes. I didnt actually modify the bolt holes, I just ground off the powder coat from inside the holes, so that the supplied studs would fit INTO the holes..... I do appreciate the heads up on the recommendation for your bolt on stake pocket. I didnt know they even exist. I do a lot of auto/motorcycle work, but never learned to weld.... I will look into your stake pocket option

by:

Just installed it. Will know how it holds up in a few weeks. Looks great though!!

by:

FAST shipping, quality item, heavy thick metal with a good powdercoat finish..The stake was too large for my stake pockets so I chose to grind the stake to fit. 30 min of grind and try resulted in a good fit. Black rattle can paint covered all bare metal. the splines on the wheel studs are to long for the metal. 2 washers under the stud head resulted in a flush fit for the wheel, nice and tight. This is s a quality product and e trailer is a great vendor. My installation is probably a worst case, yours will probably be a piece of cake.

by:

the larger press fit sticks out from the spare wheel and wheel studs once pressed in fully are to thick I had to add a 1/4 inch spacer washer between the wheel and tire and the stud nut included with the kit to keep the factory spair tire wheel from moving around by itself once mounted tight.

by:

I never had a spare tire before and didn’t have a way to mount it to the trailer. This is an easy an very safe way to have a spare tire without giving up cargo space. I would recommend this upgrade.

by:

Two issues. The larger pair of lug bolts have splines that extend well beyond the thickness of the steel plate, so the lug nuts run out of threads before the spare tire is tight. It will not fit into my welded on stake pockets, so I will need to grind off about 1/8 off the back, or buy a Bolt on stake pocket to put it in.

by:

It was simple to install and fit the stake pocket perfectly, the extra holes made mounting sparetire a breeze. I mounted in righthand front stake pocket on my 22ft flatbed car hauler.
Keeps sparetire out of way of loading and looks good. I always like to keep a sparetire on my trailers. Thanks for another fine product.

I liked the way it was packaged. the tire holder is well built, it's just what I was looking for. I will be installing it on my dump trailer to keep my spare tire in place. Also Thank You very much for the fast shipping. This is the second purshase I make from etrailer and I will go back to them if I need anything else.

by:

solves problem of mounting spare on hydraulic tiltbed and still lets me use adjacent bed stakes and side boards if needed. unit had 6 holes and 2 sets of press-in studs and was well constructed I put an extra locknut on vertical bolt that holds the unit in place and locking lugs on the wheel studs -- if someone tries to steal it they're going to have to work for it

by:

Got order within 3 days, the spare tire mount is well made and fit my equipment trailer well. Only issue was trying to get the friction studs into the mount to hold the tire. Other than that I am extremely happy with this product.

by:

Studs don’t fit the bracket holes. Had to dremel them out larger and hit them in with an air hammer. The spines on the studs are so long, you cant pull them through with the lug nut. Related: the wheel isn’t held on tight because the splines are too long, requiring washers behind the wheel. Fits the stake pocket (loosely) and wobbles back and forth. Looks like it should hold the tire, just assuming it will be noisy over bumps. Overall, rough installation and not happy about the pocket fit.

by:

Like others have said, the bolt splines are too long and the wheel isn't flush with the mount, so the wheel wobbles. Will have to use about 1/4" washers also. The bracket that's supposed to "catch" the bottom of the stake pocket is out of alignment, leaving the whole unit a bit loose, but not enough for the whole mount to come out.

by:

I installed this carrier on my 2018 PJ Trailer and it went on easy, clean and is exactly what I was looking for. It only took 3 days from ordered to delivery. Great product and service!!

by:

This is excellent way to carry your spare tire, well built and the etrailer folks shipped it immediately. Very impressed!

by:

This spare tire holder is well constructed and gives you the ability to mount the unit at any rail location needed for the equipment you haul.
