Hi, everybody, Adam, here with etrailer. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima HD roof rack system on our 2020 Ram 1500. So this is going to be a great addition to your guys's Ram, just because we're going to be able to use the top of the truck along with the bed of our truck. So we're going to be able to get even more goods on the top of our cab here, just to maybe free up some space on the inside of the cab for some of our passengers. We have a bunch of different accessories. And the nice thing is we can use the wrap around accessories, but also we are going to be able to use the T slot accessories as well.
We have stuff ranging from kayak carriers, fishing rod carriers, to bike carriers, and also just a roof-mounted basket if you guys are going on a long trip and you have a bed full of stuff. And the reason why I chose the HD bars is just because we can actually put these on the bed. It is sold separately. It's just a adapter kit for the rails of your bed. And we're going to be able to use them not only on the roof, but if we purchase those separately, we can throw it on the bed of our truck as well. I really love the look of the bars too, and they are extremely sturdy.
But on the roof, we are only going to have about 165 pounds of weight capacity. So be sure to check your guys' owner's manual, make sure that our roof of the truck is going to be able to handle all of that weight. It is made of aluminum has a nice powder coated finish, so it is going to resist against rust and corrosion over time. So it's going to look just as good as it does now over time.Unlike most bars, we actually aren't going to have to remove the end cap to put on our T slot accessories. The cap up top has a little channel here, so we don't have to remove it, which is awesome. And all we're going to have to do is just trim back this rubber piece here, just to make room for whatever attachment we are going to be putting it on.
But the nice thing about it is if you guys are just using wraparound accessories and you plan on keeping this weatherstrip in there, that is just going to help it from whistling whenever you guys are going down the road. So, that air is not going to really get trapped in that little T slot. So it's going to be quieter down the road compared to some that don't have this little strip up top here.Another thing that sets it apart is these tie-down points on the ends of our caps. So those are going to be great just for tying everything down. So you don't really have to worry about wrapping any type of strap up and around our bars, which we can do.
But luckily this cap is extremely functional and we can go ahead and use that as a tie down as well.If I was to tell you guys what I would recommend buying with this kit is obviously just getting the adapters for the bed of your truck. Just because I saw a couple of Rams that had the HD bars in the bed and it looked really cool. But also we do have a optional locking core that we could put on the end cap of our towers here just so it gets going to give us peace of mind. So if you guys are traveling quite a bit, or if you guys go to like parks and for your bikes with all your friends and you just don't want any of your cool gear on top of your Ram to get stolen, I would definitely recommend grabbing some locking cores, but they are sold separately. And we really aren't adding a whole lot of height to our Ram here, but just so you guys know from the top of our roof to the top of the bar, it's going to be about four and a half inches. So now all we really need to go over is just the installation process. So we're just going to go ahead and show you guys how.So the first thing that we'll want to do, if you guys haven't already is take your bar. We're going to have to remove our end caps. I'm using the HD bars here, and all we really need to do is take our tool and undo one simple bolt at the end, just to take off that cap so we can get our towers into place. Now with the end cap off of our bar, we can start assembling our feet. First, we want to take our little plastic piece here. You see how there's like little ribs here, and it kind of lines up with the ribs down inside our tower. We're going to kind of line those up and push it into place. You'll hear it snap, which is awesome. So then we're going to go ahead and take our metal T here. Kind of just put it on that screw. What we're going to have to do to tighten it down is pull open this little gate right here, all the way open. And that is going to reveal a little bolt down in here. And that's what we're going to do to get that metal piece threaded in. We don't want to tighten it at all. All we want to do is tighten it enough to where it is going to be flush with our plastic piece here that we put in for it.And once we have that done, we can go ahead and grab our bar again. And we really only have to take off one of these end caps for the HD bars. It might be different for your guys's bars, but this is just the way I like to do it. And since I am going to put this one on the other side, I want to put it in. it looks as if I'm doing it backwards. But we're going to slide it in there. If you guys are struggling to get it to fit, you guys can go ahead and loosen it a little bit. That same bolt that we we're tightening earlier. And that's just going to expand that gap that we need for it to fit into our T slot. You take it and start sliding it throughout the track. And I put this one in backwards just because I'm planning on sliding it all the way down to the other end of the bar.And then we can go ahead and do that same exact thing for our other tower. Now we can go ahead and put our feet on there. And we just want to make sure that the arrow is going to be facing towards the outside of our bar. Put our end cap back on our bars. And now we're ready to put it on a roof.So now that we are putting our bars up, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look at the instructions and they are going to let you know how far we're supposed to space these apart, and also the measurements between the two different towers. So check those out. We have everything as it's supposed to be here. So now we can go ahead and continue. And what we're going to do is we're going to flip this little gate open, and then we're going to go ahead and take our little clip here and slide it into this little slot here. Now that we have everything nice and tight and go ahead and close this little gate here. And then we can go ahead and put on our end cap. You're going to start just by putting these little hooks on first and then snapping the top in. We can do that same exact thing for the other side.Well, everyone that just about does it for a look at the Yakima HD roof rack system on our 2020 Ram 1500.

These multipurpose, galvanized steel crossbars supply the backbone for your aftermarket roof rack system. Works with accessories that clamp around the bars. Pair with Yakima towers, fit kit, and RoundBar SL Adapter to create a complete roof rack.Kimberly has shown that great customer service is not dead! etrailer and Kimberly are great to work with and have earned my business and will always be the 1st and last place I look for my rack+ needs!
As for the application, I needed more space to fit my cargo box on top of my 4Runner TRD Pro’s rack. I came up this this… Thank you!
Free delivery that showed up in 3 days!!! Can't beat it. The crossbars with the Control Towers and LandingPad 9 fit perfectly on my Honda Element. Had them installed in about 30 mins. Don't have my cargo box yet and wanted to test strength, so I had my 110lb wife standing on them with no issues (yes, the car was parked). Plan to take a long camping trip next week with a cargo box on top...wife will be in the vehicle:-)
Works perfectly. I am always impressed that Yakima continues to make parts for the "old roundbars" since they have since moved on to the superior JetStream bars.
Love my Yakima roof rack!! It exceeds my expectations.great product. Also thank etrailer for the tec support! great staff always there to help thanks again!!
Excellent selection of rack parts. Very useful installation videos help when choosing between products. Easy ordering process. Quick delivery.
necessary for using the widest cross bar option (78"). East to install
A great company to do business with, and lots of merchandise in stock. I orderd a roof rack for my truck on Tuesday morning and it was on the porch when I returned from work on Thursday. I will deffinitely order more from etrailer.com
The rack has been so useful since I purchased it. Staff at etrailer.com were exceptionally helpful in getting the best option for my car and answering questions. I recommend this company, for its 110% customer service, excellent prices and timely delivery.
Really easy to install & work as specified. So happy with the customer support/service at etrailer.
One quick phone call and Gwendolyn figured out exactly what I needed for our new car to use my old Yakima rack.
Ackage came 2 days early the install was somewhat easy (did it by myself)
Did not get to mount anything to it but seems really sturdy. One thing I can say is mark out your mounting points with provided stickers then put up and make adjustments to the roof rack.
Great first experience dealing with you guys! Shipped fast, and was a faster install. You gave me the right parts and it went together in a flash.
Will definitely be doing business with you all again.
I have been using Yakima racks for around 40 years and have never had any problems. However, I am amazed at the price increases over the years. Etrailer prices were by far lower than most. Overall, a very excellent purchase.
Kit worked perfectly on my 2021 Subaru Forester. The whole install took 30 minutes. Never been disappointed with etrailer.
Haven’t used them yet but they should work as expected
Solid build quality and easy installation on my '21 Mazda CX-5.
So far so good. Purchased these towers to use on a 2022 GMC Canyon with HD bars that I already had, primarily to carry my canoe. Yakima's fitting instructions worked perfectly and the whole system seems really solid.
I'm happy that this allows me to save money by using my old round bars on my new vehicle, with only the purchase of new "towers" and these adapters.
first try was missing what was needed
Etrailer helped. It was great!
E trailer has me me spoiled yet again! If only I could expect this level of service from other suppliers.
Works great to use my round bars on the Skyline towers.
Yakima Crossbars were as you would expect - steel bars coated in a soft black coating (be mindful when you are utilizing these with the top mounts as the clamp will eat through the soft coating when you tighten them down). I had issues with my yakima round bar setup as the brackets and tower system were allowing water to leak in. This is in no way reflective of what youll experience but Yakima has superb support. I spoke with them twice on my issue and out of their kindness they shipped me an entire setup to replace my existing one for free.
Product works as advertised thus far. When you buy the yakima towers, you are required to purchase these as well to fit the rounder bars (I feel sure there are other adapters for other bar shapes). These should have come with the towers in my opinion, and I resented having to shell out more $$ to purchase these "must have" adapters to mount my bars. 3 star overall rating based on function, price. Delivery and packaging was top-notch through etrailer.
I ordered a Yakima Roof Rack for my Toyota Prius from eTrailer.com. Part of the reason for purchasing from eTrailer.com was the promise that the racks were made specifically for the car and would not dent the roof.
I received the rack on July 31, and installed the racks on my Prius according to instructions included with the racks. Our tandem kayak is 65 lbs . The towers were placed on the outer most part of the roof as indicated by the instructions. Yakima saddles were attached to the crossbars to hold the kayak. Nothing was close or touching the top of the roof. We transported the kayak to a nearby lake, 6 miles, and back. The next day we removed the racks from the roof and noticed 4 dents on the top of the roof. It was obvious that transporting the kayak on the rack caused the dents.
We had to pay $100 to have the dents removed from the Prius roof.
I cannot continue to use this rack that puts dents in the car's roof. I was extremely disappointed in the racks. In reading the Toyota manual and contacting them by phone, there is no mention of using or not using roof racks.
I was shocked to learn from Rachel at eTrailer.com that your company takes absolutely no responsibility for this Yakima product they sell. The best they can do is to pass the buck and refer us to Yakima.
Very disappointed, and out a lot of money for a product that damages your car. Will not recommend or buy here again. eTrailer.com does not even deserve one star in this review.
Typical Yakima cross bars. Coating is a little too easy to cut or gouge, but probably needs to be that way to get the grip it provides. Good enough solution for me, and allows me to continue to use all the attachments I've accumulated over the years that require a round bar
