Using Longer Than Recommended 58 Inch Yakima # Y00409 Crossbars on 2009 Kia Optima

Question:

I have a 2009 Kia Optima and would like to use 58 inch yakima crossbars instead of the 48 inch ones recommended so that I can carry two kayaks on saddles. Is there a problem with using the longer crossbars? Thank You

As long at the crossbars you use aren't wider than the widest part of the vehicle, which could be a safety problem, you could certainly use the 58 inch crossbars instead of the 48 inch ones. According to my research, the 2009 Optima is about 71 inches wide at it's widest point. Using a 58 inch crossbar would be just fine. The rack capacity is 100 lbs, but keep in mind you might be limited by the actual capacity of the roof, if it's less. Your owner's manual or Kia dealer should be able to provide the actual roof capacity.

If you don't already have the kayak saddles, I'd recommend the Yakima SweetRoll, part # Y04074. The rear set of saddles has integrated rollers to make getting the kayaks up on the roof much easier. You'll need one set per kayak. Each kit includes bow and stern tie-downs.
