What is a Coaxial Speaker?

A coaxial speaker consists of a large main speaker (woofer) that reproduces bass sounds, and a separate small speaker (tweeter) that mounts above the woofer and reproduces high frequency sounds. Unlike dual-cone speakers that only use one driver to push sound through two attached cones (woofer and tweeter), a coaxial speaker has separate drivers for the woofer and tweeter along with a built-in crossover to control the frequencies sent to each speaker. This reduces distortion and allows for crisper, more articulate sound over dual-cone speakers.

How to Properly Measure for Cut-Out Dimension

There are two main dimensions you need to know when choosing a replacement speaker or adding a new speaker or speakers to your audio setup:

Cut-Out Diameter

Cut-Out Diameter

The cut-out diameter is the width of the circle needed to ensure the speaker mounts flush to the wall or ceiling.

Mounting Depth

Mounting Depth

The mounting depth is the depth needed behind the mounting surface for the speaker's frame and magnet structure to fit.

Video Transcript for Quest Recessed Mount Marine Speaker Review

What's up everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out these Quest Marine 50 Watt speakers. They're gonna be a coaxial speaker. Let's check 'em out. Now, it's time to play some music on there. We've listened to it, it sounds pretty good here from the boat but I'm gonna do my best to show you what that sounds like.

So our receiver here goes up to 45, we are about at 33 right now. It's moderately loud, I can hear it just fine in the boat. But I'm gonna turn it up and then we're gonna walk away from the boat and see how much we can hear. We're about 20 yards up here on the hill from the boat. Sounds pretty good.

I can hear the music just fine. So whether I'm up on the hill, or in the water, or around the boat, I should be able to hear the music which is exactly what I was looking for. When it comes to speakers there's a few different styles you can get, there's gonna be the full range, and those are the ones that usually come with the boat. So those are gonna be more of a flat sound, there's not really good highs and lows on those. And then if you get to the dual cone design that does have the tweeter and this woofer in there, and those do separate those sounds, however it's going through the same signals.

So it can get a little bit crunchy when they go together and you can hear it spike a little bit. Then there's the coaxial one and that's the one we have installed today. And that's a cleaner sound it's way crisper because it's got two separate signals going to the highs and the lows, so that's the tweeters and the woofers. These speakers come in a quantity of one and they do accept grills on there. You can see how it's exposed, it doesn't really have a built in one.

These are the ones that go on there. I just left 'em off for the video so you can have a better look at the speaker. The speaker's gonna be six and three quarters of an inch diameter. So match that up with the holes in your boat. Make sure that's gonna fit. So we went over how it sounds, and now it's time to see how it installs. It's not that bad, especially if you're replacing old speakers. You have two wires in there you're gonna connect and you'll have to run the hardware in to secure it. Now it doesn't come with its own hardware so you have to find that yourself. We managed to only use three screws in there. So you don't have to use every hole. There's eight all around the speaker to help you find that right spot to go ahead and secure it. Let's check out how I installed it. We're gonna install our speakers and remove our old ones. So, we're going to have the wires already run. We're gonna look at the back of the speaker, usually it indicates positive or negative. You can see on the inside there, there's a little plus sign and a minus sign. The bigger tab is gonna be the positive. The little one's gonna be the negative. And that's the case most of the time, and with the wires, usually the copper one's positive and the silver one's negative. So, it's gonna match those up, get those attached. With those attached, now we're gonna line up the holes with the existing holes in there, so we can fasten the speaker. Now it doesn't come with its own hardware, so you have to get your own. Luckily, we have something left over from the last speaker so that's gonna work just fine. And this happens to line up with those holes exactly where we need them. Overall, I do like these speakers. They are a better sound than the full range. The coaxial sounds really good. Now, they're only 50 Watts so they don't get as loud as I want. I want it to be loud enough that we're gonna hear it over the engine, while driving around in the lake. And these just don't quite get there. There's some Jensen speakers that are about 75 Watts that we're real loud and you could hear them over the engine, even covers up the sound of the engine. And that's what I was looking for on my boat. So if that's what you're looking for, I was looking for those as well. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and hope this helped..

Sound quality is fair (good for the overall price). Only issue was the spec. sizes supplied were all different than what the speakers actually measured. All actual dim's. are slightly larger (example spec. say outer dimension 6 3/4", actual is 7") same with cut-out dia. & depth. Installed on my Harley & had to modify a little bit.
Also, wish they came with speaker covers, but wasn't indicated in description. Hope the can last for a long time...

  • Replacement for Quest Marine Speaker QM-650
The Quest Marine Speaker # 292-100161 is also known as the QM-650 so if that's what you have then this is an exact replacement for you!

  • Mounting Hole Spacing Of The Quest Marine Speakers # 292-100161
The mounting holes for the Quest Marine Speaker # 292-100161 are 6-3/8" from center to center. There is not a seal of the back of the unit so I recommend using some butyl tape # AL28KV on the back to prevent water from leaking through. We do not currently have grills available for this speaker but do offer a wide variety of speakers that come with grills if you could provide me with the size of the cutout hole you're placing the speaker in.

  • Replacement Marine Speakers For Quest QM-650 Recessed Marine Speakers
Yes, the Furrion Marine Speaker # FMS5B requires a cut out of 4-3/8" so you will have a bit of extra cutout left. The overall diameter is 6" for this speaker so you will need to measure the spread of the screw holes that your old speaker uses to determine if the screw holes will be covered. We do offer the Quest Marine Speaker # 292-100161 that you already have if you wish to replace it with the same speaker. You will need some Alpha Systems N2100 Alphaseal All Purpose Sealant # AL85KV....

  • Replacement Speaker Option For A Quest Marine Speaker QM-650
The closest option we have for your Quest Marine Speaker # 292-100161 is the Removable Grille for Jensen 6-1/2" Coaxial Marine Speaker # RG65HGS This grill measures 6-1/2" in diameter so it's going to be a bit larger, however a better solution I can offer is to replace those speakers with the: -Jensen Marine Speakers - Recessed Mount - 6" Diameter # MS5006BR. These speakers are virtually the same speakers as # 292-100161, however it is a bit smaller, requiring a cutout of 4-3/8" diameter...
