Do I Need A Tail Light Converter?

Difference between 2 wire systems and 3 wire systems

Some vehicles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals run on separate wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) But most trailers run on a 2-wire system, which means the brake and turn signals travel along a single wire. You'll notice that, on your trailer, the brake light will flash for the turn signals.

If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, it will need to be converted so it will be compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This is where a tail light converter comes into play. This converter lets you combine the brake and turn signal functions of your vehicle so they run on a single wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights.

Powered by Your Battery

This converter won't overload or cause damage to your system because it pulls power straight from your vehicle's battery. So you can be sure that your trailer lights will activate no matter what type of bulbs your vehicle has - or your trailer, for that matter.

Powered Tail Light Converter Installation

This kit comes with all the wiring you'll need to convert your vehicle's lighting system to match your trailer's. The powered converter box has splice-in wires on one end and a harness with a 4-way flat vehicle-end connector on the other. It also comes with a power wire that will connect to your battery so your electrical system doesn't get overloaded.

To begin the installation, use the included circuit tester to double-check the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness. The color/function of the splice-in wires on this converter may not match the color/function of those on your vehicle, so you'll want to be sure to check all of the wire functions first. Once you've figured out the functions of your vehicle's wiring, use the included quick-splice connectors to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector. Quick-splices, or "wire taps," offer a quick way to make connections without you having to strip and twist wires. Just place the wires in one of the taps and snap the cover down.

Using the included double-sided tape, stick the converter box to a flat surface inside your vehicle near the tail lights. It's helpful to clean the surface first so the tape can adhere fully.

Once the converter box is spliced in, you need to run the power wire up to your battery. Be sure to remove the fuse before connecting anything so you don't blow it! You can put it back in once everything has been installed. To hook up to your battery, you'll need to disconnect the negative cable from your battery and attach the power wire to the positive terminal with the included ring terminal.

How to find a grounding point

Find a raw, unpainted metal surface to use as a grounding point and secure the white ground wire using the included self-tapping screw. Cleaning the surface before securing the white wire will ensure the converter is fully grounded. If you have a 2-wire system, the red brake wire will need to be grounded as well. You can do that in the same way, using an extra ring terminal (sold separately). Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using included cable ties.

Quick Tips:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

Built Using Surface-Mount Technology

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This construction method involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a smaller circuit board that provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability, and durability.

Circuit boards constructed using SMT perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, increasing durability and lifespan. In addition, lower resistance levels ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Complete converter. Perfect for my car. Made towing a trailer very safe and easy.

Also a must for newer vehicles with fine gauge wiring to assure adequate current is sent to the trailer lights. Easy to install and works great!!

by:
2005 Volvo XC70

I installed this in about 1 hour mostly reading and discovering which wires to use. I went and tested on a standard trailer and all the lights work as expected. With the battery in the back of the Volvo xc70 2005 I didn't have to run the wire to the front so it was even easier to install than most vehicles

Its been on a year now and I love the ability to pull a 4x8 trailer with my xc70.

2004 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class

Very happy with the trailer hitch and 4-way tail light converter for my 2004 Mercedes SLK 320. I never thought anyone would make one for a sports car, but etrailer does and it works perfectly. I found the etrailer hitch on the "SLK World" website, where other SLK owners have also installed it, and would recommend going there if you have an SLK.

Easy plug and play install. Replaced old version that had a fried converter.

Second time buying from Etrailer, will buy again if necessary. Came in a timely manner.

Product was great! Fit perfectly on my 2022 Kia Sorento Hybrid S Model. I worked at a dealership so I got the hook-up for installation but the product and the service are unmatched at etrailer.

by:

I have an older but well maintained Class A RV. I wanted to tow with lights but found out my turn signals were not the same as my brake lights. etrailer had the solution for my problem. Been on 2 cross country trips with the lights module and everything works great !

by:

"Plug and play" towed multiple trailers with no lighting issues very happy with the product.

by:
2021 Ford Bronco Sport

Mounted the receiver yesterday. Receiver is very well built. Instructions could have been better. Instructions are clear on where to trim the bumper cover but do not mention modifying the heat shield that is behind it.
Overall a good fit and a well made product.

Not looking forward to the wiring installation, but the instructions look very good. Curt makes a really great hitch.

2004 Dodge Sprinter

converter and flat 4 wiring was fine. for my application, the green RH turn signal wire was over 2 feet too short to cross from one tail light to the other. really, add 3 ft to the wire, much less hassle. the power wire from battery to converter is ALSO TOO SHORT, by more than 5 feet. Since that part of the kit is really only the fuse holder and the wire, this was a waste of money. NOT AT ALL WHAT I WOULD CALL A UNIVERSAL FIT.

This wiring harness part C59496 is considered a universal fit because it is not a plug and play custom fit application. It can be hardwired into many different vehicles. If you needed extra wire for your vehicle, I recommend part # DW02412-1 for extra 14 gauge wire.

by:
2016 Volkswagen Jetta

Got this for a 2016 Jetta. Instructions say to run this outside and under the car, but found it easier to run up the left side in the interior, tucking under the trim pieces and through the steering boot to the fuse box. Works great!

Before you test the harness with a circuit tester like item # PTW2992 can you please remove the fuse on the power wire for 30 minutes, then reinstall it. This fuse should be located close to the vehicle battery in a fuse box. If the powered converter box has engaged its circuit protection feature, this will reset the box unless it was overloaded and it was damaged.

I wish to apologize thinking there was an issue with the converter when there wasnt, the next day I did a check and because I infact thought I needed to connect the brake red wire directly to the brake switch and not the multi-purpose red and green wire on my 08 Lincoln. It works great when you wire it correctly.

by:

The Curt trailer hitch has been perfect- i also purchased the light system to connect to the trailer - it took me a whole day to install and i am thankful for the detailed videos for the hitch and lights. I only got help with the hitch when lifting it into position as i do not have a hitch jack. I think the hitch is top quality and I am confident to pull anything-

by:

Functional piece of equipment. Was easy to install.

by:
2017 Mercury Tracer

Contains all you need to make this work. Used it on my 2017 GLE350 that has LED tail lights using combined brake and signal lights. Figuring out the correct wires to connect to was a bit trial and error. Running the wire from the module to the fuse box below the rear passenger seat took some time as well. But the setup works without a problem.
Wires:
Brake (red): connect to ground.
Lights (brown): right tail light, white with blue tracer.
Right turn: right tail light, gray/black wire
Left turn: left tail light, gray/black wire.
Ground: at rear of the car, between tail light and spare wheel well.
12V power: below rear passenger seat, using the big screw connector/cable visible there.

Good luck!

by:

Worked as advertised and easy to install

by:

Works well - installation isn't hard after you figure out where to mount the unit and identify which wires in the vehicle harness are needed to attach the converter.

The tester probe is pretty much useless as it's hard to see. I ended using my own test tools (multimeter) to confirm its operation.

Rather than drill holes in the vehicle. I keep the harness inside the vehicle and pull it out when needed.

Great looking product can't wait for in stallation
