Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on our 2005 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab, we're going to install part number 30955. This is a replacement multi-tow 7-way and 4-way trailer connector. We're going to replace the original 7-pole connector That came with the vehicle. This is how it came to us, so you can see that the connector has seen better days. To remove our 7-pole connector, there's a tab right here that we push down and pull out. Sometimes there may be a little gray tab or a lock that fits around this.

You just push down in the center of it and just push it out of the way, then put it back when you're done. We don't have that one, so we'll just push down on this tab and pull it apart. This is our new part that's going to replace the OEM connector. This will simply just plug right back in, like this. However, we're going to take this and route it down towards the bottom of our hitch, toward our pre-existing mounting bracket. This is the bracket that comes with the part.

However, we're going to use the pre-existing one. A good location for this if you wanted to install it, would be right here. It does come with the hardware to install the bracket. However, self-tacking screws will work best in this application here. Let's go ahead and route our wire harness down.

Before we add our new connector, we'll go ahead and put some dilectic grease on the contacts to help protect them. We're using part number 11755. Let's go ahead and route this through our bracket. We'll go ahead and make our connection. We'll just push the two together, make sure they line up OK, and squeeze them until they click. Now we'll use the hardware that comes with the kit, to attach our 7-pole to the bracket.

With our hardware loosely assembled, we'll go ahead and tighten it down, using a flat-blade screw driver. Typically, this star washer on the back will give enough grip; we don't need a wrench. If you do, a 3/8 will work just fine. We'll go ahead and route our wire harness up and out of the way, make sure it's safe and secure with some zip ties. Zip ties don't come with the kit, so you might want to go ahead and get extra long zip ties to go around the hitch. In just a few minutes we've got a new 7-pole connector plus a 4-pole connector installed on our truck. That will do it for our replacement multi-tow 7-way and 4-way trailer connector on our 2005 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab. .

Replacement Custom Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors - 30955

etrailer had what we needed. At times it is not easy locating accessory parts on vehicles not factory installed. Easy to navigate site to find and compare the exact parts we were looking for.

by:

Looks like a good quality plug, the only thing I can knock it for is there’s no bracket for securing it to the round tube on the receiver.

by:
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Product was exactly what I was looking for and thanks to the hitch system previously purchased, it was fabricated for a perfect fit. Also, the first one that came in was busted up a little, etrailer immediately sent a new one out with no hassle. Great company.

by:

Perfect fit just plug and play good quality hitch.

by:

Great fit works good has 7way rv plug and the regular flat 4 plug no need for adapters to lose or have stolen.

Been using this plug for a year now still working great

by:

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver was easy to install and has worked just fine in pulling my several trailers. For the price, an excellent deal. The 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness Connector by Hopkins was a disappointment because the cap that doubles as a dust cover and latch to the adapter has come off and missing after a few months. This cap is not replaceable, the whole connector would have to be replaced.

by:
2006 GMC Sierra

Exact fit for my 06 GMC Sierra it took longer to get my spare tire down than to install the tow package. My spare was stuck.

by:

Perfect fit and function as usual from etrailer.

by:
2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Perfect! I used this on a single cab Chevy Silverado 1500. Plugged into factory trailer lights near spare tire, mounted it up, plugged in trailer and everything worked just like it should. My truck does not have a spare tire so I removed the spare tire keyhole mount and cut some of the bumper to fit the adapter. My truck did not require a ECM/PCM flash of any kind, although I hear some vehicles may have to.

by:

I installed this today. Took around 90 minutes but part of that was learning how to get the spare out of the way. I drilled two holes in the bottom of the bumper because of where I wanted the connector to be placed. All necessary hardware came with the unit. This was very easy to do after watching etrailer's How To video. Good job guys, great product.

2006 Chevrolet Silverado

in my case I have to say that first look at YouTube from there I got the video with the description of the process and the number of the part of there just went to etrailer.com I put the # alone went out it was really easy to send fantastic just wait 4 days in regular shipment for the installed only you see that plug it in thank you I hope that some more will serve..

by:

Nice product ,Easy to install and then worked as supposed to . I installed in bumper as opposed to the add on bracket that came with it ,made for a easier way to plug in trailer cord.

by:

Works great!!! Thanks....

2006 Chevrolet Silverado

I bought this 7 way trailer connector to replace a broken one on my 2006 Chevy 2500HD. It was an easy install and only took a few minutes to complete. I tested it with my trailer connected and all works fine.
The shipping was super fast.
Thanks , etrailer.

by:

Cathy T. was very good help. She set me up with the correct parts for our 2001 Chevy so we can have a 7 prong plug in at the bumper and in the box.
We got rid of the cobbled up mess that started giving us trouble and now everything works great. The plug and play took me about 1 1/2 hours to complete. We will do business again if needed. Thanks again Cathy T. and etrailer!

by:

The product was an exact one-for-one replacement. However, I ended up having to replace the female connector due to corrosion. This took a bit of time. The result was all new connections that work fine. Thanks for all your assistance.

2007 Chevrolet Silverado

My 2007 Classic Silverado Crew Cab 4x4 did not have a factory hitch receiver, so I selected the 13322 Curt Hitch Receiver because it closely resembles the OEM hitch receiver and attaches to the bottom of the bumper. Installation was easy, as shown in the videos and described by other reviewers. All holes aligned perfectly. I did not remove the spare tire as it is not necessary. I used two jack stands to raise/support the receiver frame in place while I started the first bolts. I had the 22mm and 19mm sockets needed to tighten and torque the bolts/nuts. It looks great and I now am able to tow.

For the wiring I installed the 30955 Hopkins 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors to the bumper adjacent to the license plate. This required drilling a 2-1/8" hole in the bumper, which was time consuming, but it now resembles a factory installation. I was able to remove the license plate and connect to the factory plug.

I ordered these parts from etrailer for a number of reasons: 1) The website is intuitive and contains a tremendous amount of information for the person who is trying to research product information; 2) the selection and inventory is amazing; 3) the prices are very competitive – free shipping for orders over $99; and 4) the dedicated customer service is outstanding – the email communication is prompt. I ordered on a weekend and it was delivered by the following Friday.
A very positive first experience.

Quick shipping. And best part they sent me the correct hitch and plug in. No complaints here!

  • No Running Lights from 4-Pole on Factory Connector of 2008 Dodge Durango
It sounds like your 2008 Dodge Durango has a factory-installed combination 4-way/7-way trailer socket like # 30955 or # HM40975. Both of these replacement parts install using a round 7-pin U.S. Car connector that plugs in to the back of the socket. Please refer to the linked photo to see the rear of part # HM40975 that shows the round plug. First, test without your adapter. Make sure the main ground wire on the truck AND trailer is securely attached to a clean bare metal surface, one...

  • Recommendation for Simple, Inexpensive Brake Controller for a 2003 GMC Sierra
For your application I recommend the Draw-Tite Activator IV # 5504 which will install in your 2003 GMC Sierra with the Adapter # 3015-P. The Activator IV is a cost-effective time delayed controller that comes with a limited lifetime warranty and only has 4 buttons plus the manual slide for manually applying the trailer brakes. All of this basically means that this is a simple inexpensive controller like what you're looking for. Attached is a sample installation video that you can check...

I would recommend the Tekonsha P2 Brake Controller With # 90885 and the GM Adapter # 3025-P. This wiring adapter that will allow you to simply plug the controller into your vehicle connector, located under your dash. If you already have a factory-installed 7-Way plug, no additional parts would be needed, but if your 2002 Chevrolet Suburban is not equipped with a 7-Way plug, you would also need to install 7-Way connector # 30955. • Installing a Brake Controller on a 2007 Chevy Avalanche With or Without a Factory Tow Package
Yes, that is correct. Some model 2007 Chevy Avalanches have what is called a factory tow package that comes with a 7-Way connection at the rear of the vehicle, and/or wiring already ran under the dash for a brake controller. Some models do not have this factory tow package. You will be able to tell if you have a functioning 7-Way trailer plug at the rear of the vehicle. No matter which system you have, installation of a brake controller will be fairly simple on your vehicle. Even without...

  • Combination 7-Way & 4-Pole Vehicle Connector
Hopkins does offer a combination 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector # 30955 which has both 7-way and 4-pole connectors. This connects to the vehicle via a round U.S. Car type connector, just like the part # HM40975 that you referenced. But part # 30955 allows use of both connectors at once. If you need a pigtail harness we offer Hopkins # PK11998.

If you unplugged your current 7-way and plugged in the part # 30955 in it's place you'd have a 7-way and 4-way combo like you are wanting. The great thing about 7-way connectors is they basically all use the same round connector so this would easily fit in place of what you have. There isn't a plug in style adapter that could be inserted into a 7-way that would give both though.

If you find the connector you can use the # 30955 but if not you'd need to use the # 37185 to convert your 4-way to a 7-way and you'd need to run a length of 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 from the blue wire of the adapter to the blue wire of the brake controller.
