No Running Lights from 4-Pole on Factory Connector of 2008 Dodge Durango

Question:

I have a harness with both a 7 pin and a 4 pin plug. This plugs into a 7 pin from my Durango. When testing voltage, I have power for the running lights on the 7 pin side, but not the 4 pin side. I have a brand new adapter and it has the same issue.

It sounds like your 2008 Dodge Durango has a factory-installed combination 4-way/7-way trailer socket like # 30955 or # HM40975. Both of these replacement parts install using a round 7-pin U.S. Car connector that plugs in to the back of the socket. Please refer to the linked photo to see the rear of part # HM40975 that shows the round plug.

First, test without your adapter.

Make sure the main ground wire on the truck AND trailer is securely attached to a clean bare metal surface, one free of dirt, grease and paint. Often correcting a weak ground will fix a running light problem.

You can try cleaning off the 4-pole's running light pin in case corrosion is the cause for the problem. Spray contact cleaners like Caig De-Oxit can sometimes help with corroded contacts, as can a small brush. The running light circuit is carried on the brown wire that is next to the ground pin.

If cleaning the contact does not help you can unplug the 7-way/4-way from the Durango wiring and directly test the pins on the Durango's plug. If you find the running light signal is present on the 7-way part of the connector but not on the 4-pole part then you can replace it with either of the parts referenced above.

If the truck's wiring does not carry the correct signals then you'll want to check your fuse panel for a blown trailer lighting fuse and replace it as needed.

Since you have a combination socket on the truck I am not sure what type of adapter you'd be needing but do note that some adapters may change the pin/function assignment. This could cause loss of a certain function when the adapter is used. Please refer to the linked article for help with trailer connector function assignments.
