Question:

Which brake controller do you recommend for this suv? Is the wiring there already? What is the main diference between the Prodigy P2 and the P3?

For your 2001 Chevy Suburban, between the Prodigy P2 and P-3, I recommend the P2, as it is an easy to use (what I would call entry level) brake controller. It also gets the job done and is one of our most popular models. The P2 is a basic electric brake controller with a digital display. The P-3 has a larger LCD screen that displays various Diagnostic Troubleshooting Displays and Warning Signs.

In 2001, Chevy had Suburbans with factory 7-Way (meaning it is already wired for towing and a brake controller) and models that did not. The easiest way to check is to look for a 7-way connection at the rear of the vehicle. Test it with a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, to see if it functions. Depending on if you have factory 7-Way wiring or not, there different paths to take in terms of wiring your vehicle for a brake controller. I will start with the factory 7-way path.

You will start with Tekonsha Brake Controller with Wiring, # 90885 and vehicle specific wiring adapter # 3025-P. On the vehicle, there should be an electrical junction box located on the driver's side, below the dash, and to the left of the brake pedal, this is where you will plug in one end of the # 3025-P. Then you will plug the other end of the wiring adapter into the back of the brake controller.

You will have to add Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector, # 30955. I have included an installation video showing this process on a similar vehicle. You should have the harness that plugs into the Multi-Tow already on your vehicle. After that there are a few things to do under the hood. It is explained step by step in the second half of the FAQ I have provided below.
