When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Adjustable Channel Design

The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

This actuator is great for tall trailers. This is because the adjustable channel is positioned so that the mounted coupler can sit below the actuator tube, allowing for a greater drop than with a standard center-mounted channel. As a result, you can line up your tall trailer with your tow vehicle's hitch for a level setup.

Video Transcript for Review of Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4857220

Hello everybody. This is Jeff fi trailer.com. Today we can gonna take a look at this Titan adjustable channel down hydraulic drum break actuator with the elec electric reverse lockout. And it has a 12,500 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will activates your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and the momentum will push the trailer toward the rear of your vehicle.

So with the surge brake system the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward. Once the tow vehicle starts to slow down. So when that happens, this inner slide portion of the x-ray will contract and it applies force to the master cylinder in the back here. So this in turn supplies, the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. This one is a unique roller design has the roller right up here.

This will reduce resistance during that telescoping to create nice straight line movement. Also, if you notice on the end of that roller where it does have a grease CI fitting which will allow you to attach a grease gun to it and then pump grease in there to lubricate it. This is a sturdy steel durable steel construction resist bending in any Jack knife situations. We mentioned this one at the very back here. If you notice the wires it does have an electric reverse lockout.

So I, this will let you back up without actuating your trailer brakes. Basically that electric reverse lockout is automatically activated. When you shift your tow vehicle into reverse basically the wires here will wire into your trailer connector, which connects to your tow vehicle so that it can detect when you're in reverse. When it is in reverse. This solenoid ensures that that hydraulic actuator does not activate the trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to bake up, back up the vehicle.

Now because of the wiring here it will require this feature does require either a five way flat six way round or a seven way trailer connector to connect it to also if you notice has its nice built in shield over it which will protect that OID valve from the elements and any damage front you'll notice has this offset adjustable channel that goes in the down position has five different mounting positions for your coupler. Now the couple is not included. We do sell that separately and that builtin drop is great for you. Some tall trailers, the channel height on this. If we put a ruler on it it's very bottom to the top and we're at 12 inches. The inside width of the channel's gonna be right at three inches. Now the distance between these mounting holes center to center is two inches. So it does give you a range of 10 inches of vertical adjustment. Now, if you notice this does include let me just unhook it here so we can show you but it will include this breakaway chain and hook that is included, and it is required by law. Basically what this does is prevents a trailer runaway situation. So what you end up doing is taking the hook on this end and attaching that to your tow vehicle. And once that's attached to your tow vehicle then you're hooked up and you towing. If by chance your trailer would become detached from your tow vehicle, it would pull this chain which would activate that lever which would then activate the pressure in the master zone to apply the brakes and prevent a runaway situation. Again, it is included and it is required by law. Now this does have a nice zinc finish on it on the outer on the whole unit gives you a nice protection corrosion resistant protection. It is a bolt on installation. It is designed to Mount to straight three inch wide trailer tongue. Again, the application. This is for trailers with drum breaks gross towing weight capacity on is 12,500 pounds. And the maximum tongue weight is 1,250 pounds But that should do it for the review on this Titan adjustable channel down hydraulic drum break actuator with the electric reverse lockout and a 12,500 pound gross towing weight capacity..

  • Identifying Free Backing Trailer Brake Assemblies When Replacing Atwood 85778 Surge Brake
To check for a Free Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake # AKFBBRK-35 you will need to remove your brake drum assembly. The free backing brakes have a different front brake shoe. This shoe is designed to fall away when the trailer is moving in reverse. The fall away brake shoe will have a pivot point in the shoe that allows it to fall away(See Image). The Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator # DM72VR can be used with the free backing brakes as the Demco 8605001 is no longer an active item....

  • Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuator With Electric Lockout
There are only a few hydraulic drum brake actuators that come with electric lockouts, and the right one will depend on the size of the channel you are bolting it to. The Titan Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Drop and Electric Lockout # T4854020 is large, fitting on a 4" wide channel and coupling to a 2-5/16" hitch ball. Based on your trailer's GVWR of just under 6,000 lbs you likely have a 3" wide channel (though you will need to verify this). So what I recommend instead is the Titan Brake...
