Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this Dexter Adjustable Channel Drum Brake Actuator. Now this adjustable drop channel surge-type actuator will activate your trailer's drum brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer towards the rear of your vehicle. So with surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator will telescope, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn is going to supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Now this is a weld-on installation. This is going to weld on your straight three-inch wide trailer tongue and give you a offset adjustable channel that has five different mounting positions for a coupler, and that coupler is sold separately. And this actuator is going to be great for your tall trailers. This is because the adjustable channel is positioned so that the mounted coupler can sit below the actuator tube, allowing for a greater drop than with a standard center-mounted channel. So as a result, you can line up your tall trailer with your tow vehicle's hitch, giving you a level setup.

This is made of a sturdy steel construction with a primed finish, and this has a gross towing weight capacity of 20,000 pounds and a maximum tongue weight of 2,000 pounds. This features a unique roller design, which is going to reduce resistance during telescoping to create a straight line movement. And as you have no doubt already seen, a breakaway chain is included with a hook to ensure a secure connection to your breakaway lever. This hook, this will hook, rather, to your tow vehicle and prevent a trailer runaway situation. So if your trailer unhooks from your tow vehicle, it will pull this chain, which will activate the master cylinder to apply the brakes to keep it from a runaway situation.

Now, one final note, because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.
