When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T1890900

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Titan adjustable-channel drum break actuator with the 2-5/16 ball coupler. Has a 12,500-pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brakes when the tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is, when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, the deceleration occurs and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. And with the surge brake system this actuator is then triggered as your trailer moves forward once the tow vehicle starts to slow down.

So when this happens, this inner portion right up here is what'll contract, and it applies force to the master cylinder in the back here, and this, in turn, supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. Now, this actuator has a unique roller design, reduces the resistance during the telescoping to help create nice straight-line movement. Do you notice on the roller itself, this one has a grease Zerk fitting on the end. That allows you to hook a grease gun to it and pump it full with grease. So it makes easy lubrication of that roller.

This is a sturdy, durable steel construction. It will resist bending in any jackknife situations. Now, we mentioned this is an adjustable channel right here. Does have three different mounting positions for your ball coupler. The ball coupler itself is designed to fit a 2-5/16 standard ball.

Few measurements on the channel. The overall height, if we go from the very bottom to the very top, is gonna be seven and a half inches tall. The inside width on the channel is right at three inches wide. Now, the distance between these adjustment holes, there's four of 'em, this is gonna be two inches. So it will give you a vertical range of height adjustment of six inches.

Now, this actuator does also include this breakaway chain and hook. Let me just show you what we're talking about. If we unravel this you can see there's the chain that's hooked to this lever, and down on this end is a hook, and what this is for, this is required by law. So what you want to do with this is, this hook attaches to your tow vehicle when you hook up. And what that does is, it'll prevent a trailer runaway situation. So with this hooked up to your tow vehicle, what happens if this comes disconnected from your tow vehicle, it will pull this chain, which would activate that lever, which would then, in turn, supply that hydraulic pressure again to the master cylinder, and that'll put the brakes on in the trailer. So it does prevent a runaway situation. And again, this comes with it. It's all included. Now, this does also have a primed finish on it which offers corrosion resistance. This is a weld-on installation. It is designed to mount to a straight three-inch-wide trailer tongue. Few specs on this again, the application is for trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. Gross towing weight capacity on this is 12,500 pounds. And the maximum tongue weight is 1,250 pounds. One last note I do wanna mention on this actuator is, because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with either a reverse lockout solanoid, which you attach to the master cylinder back here, or to have free-backing brakes on your trailer so that you can drive in reverse without this actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. But that should do it for the review on this Titan adjustable-channel drum break actuator with the 2-5/16 ball coupler and a 12,500-pound gross towing weight capacity..
