Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.
When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.
Adjustable Channel Design
The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at "etrailer.com". Today we gonna take a look at this Demco 8 inch adjustable channel center hydraulic drum brake actuator has a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity and a prime finish. Now this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with the surge brake system, then this actuator's triggered as your trailer moves forward. Once your tow vehicle starts to slow down and when this happens, the inner slide portion of this actuator will contract.
It applies force to the master cylinder back here, and this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes and stop the trailer. What's nice on this actuator, uses an acetal copolymer lining between this center slide tube and the outer case and that provides a nice smooth operation as this actuator telescopes in and out. This does use an adjustable channel center has three different mounting positions for your coupler. Now the coupler is not included. We do sell those separately on our website.
Just to give you a few dimension. The height of this channel Is gonna be right at 8 inches tall. The width, which will be measured inside to inside is right at 3 inches. This is a heavy duty steel construction has a nice prime finish to it. And this master cylinder back here we mentioned that is a composite master cylinder which is very durable and efficient.
It's a glass reinforced nylon construction to resist rust and corrosion. Has a very large reservoir to provide increased capacity for your break fluid. And what's nice at the top here where you put your break fluid in it's an automotive style diaphragm cap which creates a completely enclosed system to help prevent contamination of the break fluid. Now the break, breakaway cable and the hook right here you can see is included and it is required by law. And the reason is this prevents a trailer runaway situation.
Basically what happens is you take this hook, has a keeper on it and hook this to your tow vehicle when you hook up your trailer and then in case this happens to become detached from your tow vehicle, it would pull on this cable which would activate this lever, which would again supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes and stop the trailer. Again, this comes with the actuator and it is required by law. Just gonna hook this back up. There we go. Now this is a weld on installation. It does mount to a straight 3 inch wide trailer top. This part is made in the USA application again is for trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. Gross towing weight capacity on this is 20,000 pounds. Maximum tonne weight is 2000 pounds. This does go by the model number of DA20. One last note I do wanna mention on this actuator is because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout in the back here, it is recommended that you equip the trailer with either that reverse lockout solenoid that'll screw into the master cylinder back here or to have free backing brakes on your trailer so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. But that should do it for the review on this Demco 8 inch adjustable channel center hydraulic drum brake actuator with the 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.
