Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bars RM-880 Review

Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Roadmaster adjustable ball mount. This ball mount from Roadmaster is designed to be used with a tow bar for flat towing applications, so it's not to be used with trailers. The shank is gonna slide into 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver, and then the ball platform provides a mounting point for your hitch ball, that way you can couple to your tow bar. Now, this does feature an adjustable design that allows you to make sure that your towing setup is as level as possible. It's really simple to make your adjustments, all you need to do is pull the clips from the pin. So there's gonna be two pins, two clips, pull those out, and that's gonna allow you to move the platform up and down the shank. So if you have the platform at the lowest setting, this is the drop position, it's gonna give you a maximum drop of around 9".

That's from the inside top edge of the receive tip of your hitch, to the top of the ball platform. If you flip this over to the rise position, and if you keep the mount in this position, it's gonna give you a rise of about 3 1/2". And then if you want to, you can take this over, and then you would need to reposition your ball, but this would give you a maximum rise of around 7" from the inside top edge of the receiver tip of your hitch to the top of the ball platform. And so once you find the setting that works best for your application, all you gotta do is line up your pin holes, reinsert your pins, and then simply secure them with the clips on the other side. So adjustability of this unit is a really great feature to have, and it's pretty simple to make your adjustments. And then it's going to have that set screw right here, that you can tighten up once you have it set.

And what that does, is it allows for a nice, tight, secure connection between the platform and the adjustable portion of the shank, so that's gonna reduce any wiggle and play that may be present. The unit itself is made from a durable steel construction. It does feature a hollow shank design. It also features a really nice, black, powder coated finish, which is going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. The mount secures in your hitch using the hitch pin and clip, or a hitch lock, those items are sold separately and available at etrailer.com. The pin holes on this unit will accept a standard 5/8" diameter pin.

You'll notice that on the shank it has two hitch pin holes, that way you can use whatever one works best for your application. Now, again, when it comes to the adjustability, you're gonna be able to adjust this unit up and down in increments of 1", so again, it allows for maximum adjustability for your application. It's a 2" x 2" shank. It's gonna offer a gross towing weight capacity of 6,000 pounds, and then a 200 pound maximum tow weight capacity. That information is printed right here on the label that comes on the shank of the mount itself. The pins and clips for the adjustable portion, those are included, as well as the set screw. A few measurements I wanna go over with you real quick.

I took a measurement from the center of each hitch pin hole to the center of the hitch ball hole. So, from the closest one, I got a measurement of about 10", and from this one, I got a measurement of about 12". Overall length, from very front to very back, measured around 16". It does require a ball with a 1" diameter shank, and a 2" diameter ball. The hitch balls are sold separately, and available at etrailer.com if you're interested and inaudible 00:03:39 to pick one up. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Roadmaster adjustable ball mount.

  • Hole Spacing For An Adjustable Ball Mount 2 Inches on Center
I see the confusion with the hole spacing and think I can clear it up. The holes are 3/4 inch and they are 2-1/2 inches apart on center. They are not 1-1/4 inches apart however, that is the adjustment increment based on the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Weight Distribution Shank for 2 inch Hitches,# AMAC1, this part is paired with. The actual metal spanning between the holes is 1-3/4 inches. The only similarly styled adjustable ball mount I could find that has a 2 inch on center adjustment...
