Video Transcript for Review of Reese Replacement Weight Distribution Trunnion Spring Bar - RP66009

Hi, there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Reese replacement weight distribution trunnion spring bar. This is going to replace a cam style spring bar that will work with your Reese weight distribution systems with dual cam sway control like the one you see on the screen there with the 12,000 pound gross towing weight and the 1,200 pound tongue weight. This trunnion bar is constructed of a hot rolled and tapered steel, so it is going to provide superior strength and flexibility. It does have that 600 to 1,200 pound tongue weight so it is going to work as a direct replacement for that model of weight distribution system that I just showed, or if you have a similar weight distribution system with that Reese style and you're wanting to replace the spring bar to either go up in weight or down in weight to meet your application's needs, this will be a great option for that as well.

You can see it does have the curved end here that it is designed for that dual cam sway control system. So make sure you're getting the right one for you. You can see it does have the trunnion design up here as well, so it's gonna work really well. And because this is a direct replacement from Reese, you can trust that he is gonna fit right in place of your original. No worries about compatibility or anything like that.

So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

They have worked out very well, I would certainly recommend them!

I always deal with etrailer. The only reason why I possibly might not buy my trailer and towing needs from someone else is if etrailer doesn't carry them!! I've used the Reese Strait-Line equalizer and sway control system for 20 years, and bought the Reese Strait-Line for my son and sister-in-law. I prefer it to other systems such as the "Equalizer" brand system because the Reese "dual-cam" system is the only one which has a center detent position on the "bent bars". If the trailer moves to one side or the other, it must first put several hundred pounds more tension on the "bent bars". This tension forces the trailer to move right back to the straight-behind position without any steering wheel movement at all. I already have these 1200 lb. bars on my Strait-Line hitch and sway control. My sister-in-law is getting a new trailer with heavier tongue weight, and these bars will replace the 800 lb. bars she has now.

The heavier-duty spring bars have worked out well on my sister-in-laws new, heavier travel trailer. No problems at all, truck trailer tow level.

I have owned a Reese weight distribution system now for almost four years that I use on my 28' Pace Car Hauler Trailer. I have been extremely satisfied with the performance of the system and the recommendations and continued on-going service from the folks at etrailer.com.

Miss R took my order.........

The
1200 pound Reese trunion bars came quickly. I was impressed with the heavy duty box and good packing.

Great price and first class service. My box trailer needs some more items. I will definitely buy them from Etrailer.

Thank you

Excellent product

by:

Folks at Etrailer are wonderful. Thanks for all the instructional videos that help us with our hauling needs. I needed to replace my 800/10,000 lb trunnion bars with 1200/12,000 bars when purchasing a heavier trailer. Etrailer got the new ones sent out to me in good time, and FREE SHIPPING on these heavy dudes. I notice the new ones are slightly (maybe 1/2 inch) longer, so will need to review how they hook up to my Reese Dual-Cam anti sway hitch.

by:

Great service and a great product. I purchased my 2nd Reese straight line load distribution/anti-sway system. The first one the dealer installed. This time I installed it myself and it went without a hitch. (pun intended). I did have to exchange the spring bars due a math error on my part and the shank for the system apparently escaped from a box. But not a problem. Etrailer staff had them to me in 2 days and I was on my way on schedule. Great job Bryan!

by:

In a previous review I gave a poor rating because the trunnion bars were missing from the original order. It took customer service two days to determine they needed to send me replace bars. However the representative was professional and once the determination was made the bars shipped right away and were delivered within days. I now have the entire Reese w Weight Distribution System and it is a great buy for the money.

by:

etrailer is a great place to buy from, I've been a customer since 2007. Great price, fast, great customer service, plus plenty of online help. Reese weight distribution systems make trailering much easier and safer. I've owned 3 travel trailers and would not want to tow without the reese strait-line weight distribution system with sway control.

by:

Talked to sales, ordered correct parts, installed the new bars. They work excellent. $180 for new heavier weight distribution bars vs. $788 for dealer recommended hitch. I will do business again. Thanks, Ken

Product was exactly as illustrated on website. The website was very well organized and easy to navigate. Thanks for making it simple. I have already recommended this website to others.

by:

Exactly what we needed when we upgraded to a heavier camper. Everyone at E-trailer was helpful in making our decision as usual. Great product and fast shipping!

by:

Replaced the 800 TW bars on my Draw-tite 7902 with RP66009 1200 TW bars. Worked perfectly. Moved the lift assemblies further back slightly as the bars are just a little longer than the 800 TW bars

by:

The service was excellent. The shipping level was upgraded at no charge and the Spring Bars arrived in perfect condition. I received personal emails at every stage of the transaction which makes a real difference if there was a problem to deal with. Because of the early delivery I was able to reset my Weight Distribution setup this weekend and I am ready to go camping again!

This was a replacement part and works perfect. Tech was a lot of help in getting the correct part.

Great replacement part. Lost my old one

by:

Just what we needed to "clean up" our Reese WDH system w/ Sway cams when we moved it onto our new trailer.

by:

Trunnion bars arrived in 2 days, packaged very well. Fit my existing hitch since I upgraded from 800# to 1200# bars. Great service from etrailer!

by:

The trunnion bars were as expected. The part I like the bestimate was etrailer had them to me quick! I needed them before this weekend and they came well in advance.

by:

Replaced my old 600lb spring bars with these 1200lb spring bars. When I ordered them the rep answered all of my questions/concerns while on the phone. They arrived two days after ordering, and I couldn't be happier!
Thank you Etrailer!

by:

Haven't used them yet but are confident in the Reese products. Packaging for shipment was a joke. There was hardly anything left of the cardboard box that these were shipped in. Looks like shipper had to try and patch up box to try and contain these heavy items.

  • Are Weight Distribution Spring Bars Universal or Brand-Specific
All weight distribution system parts, except for the shank component that fits into your hitch, are proprietary and brand-specific. You could mount a Curt WD head on a Reese shank (or the reverse) but the spring bars and other parts need to be from the same maker as the head assembly into which they will be installed. I linked our main page for trunnion spring bars. Select bars based on the brand of system and the trailer's fully-loaded tongue weight. Ideally the total TW will fall near...

  • Troubleshooting Weight Distribution Shank Option to Replace Odd Size
I haven't heard of any weight distribution system with a 1-3/4 inch shank and there isn't an adapter. If the shank at the end where the head attaches will accept a 2 inch width and has the standard 1-1/4 inch on center adjustment increments then a replacement shank is an option, but if not you have an anchor or you will require a custom fabricated shank. My recommendation for a replacement shank is the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution Shank - 12" Long - 6-1/2" Rise, 4" Drop - 1,200 lbs...

  • Solution for Needing Replacement Spring bars for Draw Tite Weight Distribution Head 06623-099
I have a solution for you, but the bars you have aren't compatible with the current bar designs made so it's going to come down to you replacing the head and the bars of your setup. So for bars you would need the part # RP66009 which has the 1,200 lb capacity you need and then for a head you would want the part # RP58167. This will attach to the shank you already have as well.

The head and spring bars that you are referencing have not been in production for about 30 years. Reese no longer carries replacement parts for for your system. I would recommend replacing your head with the Reese # RP58167 head unit and for spring bars I recommend the Reese # RP66009 replacement spring bar with 1200 pounds of tongue weight capacity. These together will get you updated to new parts that you can depend upon.

  • Upgrading to 1,200 Pound Weight Distribution Spring Bars for 7,725 Pound Trailer
The dry hitch weight is the weight with the trailer empty of everything including propane and any other cargo, water, and other items. The gross weight of your 2017 Grey Wolf 26DBH is 7,725 pounds. That is the maximum the trailer can weigh when loaded and ready to tow. The empty weight is 5,795 pounds. So is 725 is the dry hitch weight then that is 12.5 percent of the gross trailer weight. That means that when loaded to the max 7,725 pounds the tongue weight would be around 965 pounds....

  • Replacement Spring Bars to Upgrade Tongue Weight Capacity on Reese Strait-Line WD System
Since the loaded tongue weight of your trailer will very likely creep up over the 800 pound tongue weight capacity on your existing Reese Weight Distribution System like # RP66083, I do recommend replacing the spring bars to increase its rating. The Replacement Reese Trunnion Spring Bar # RP66009 will work perfectly for your new trailer. This spring bar has a tongue weight capacity of 600 to 1,200 pounds, so will work well even if you fall toward the lighter tongue weight possibilities...

The good news is the brackets that install on the trailer frame will stay in that one position so you won't have to worry about drilling anymore than would be required for a given weight distribution system. Since your gross trailer weight will be as little as 4,500 pounds and as much as 7,000 that would put the tongue weight at about 450 pounds at the lowest to 1,050 pounds at the highest. • Selecting Replacement Trunnion Weight Distribution Spring Bars for Reese WD System
The best-performing weight distribution/sway control systems are those that prevent sway from occurring in the first place, rather than trying to stop it once it starts. Reese Dual-Cam systems are among the better options in such a set-up. It is absolutely possible to swap out your existing trunnion spring bars to new ones with a more appropriate weight capacity for your trailer's tongue weight. The way to do this is to measure your trailer's tongue weight with a scale like the # e99044...

  • Will 1200lb Bars Replace 800lb Bars on Reese Strait-Line System with Gold Dual-Cam Sway Control
The Reese Strait-Line systems and dual-cam systems have gone through several versions. There are no less than 6 versions of the dual-cam sway control, half of which are obsolete, and 18 different head part numbers (though there is some overlapping on models that do and do not come with a shank). This information is not easy to find. Shank 63970 is the old part number but it is still the same shank they have used for years. The number on the head is likely a casting number. But the head...

Given the vastly different weights of the trailer depending on which vehicle you will be towing with, you will most likely have to get a second set of spring bars. If you will be towing primarily with the 2008 Chevy Silverado then use system # RP66074 rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight. It sounds like the issue you have is that you need higher rated spring bars, not longer chains. The fact that you want to angle the head back even further would indicate that you aren't getting the amount of spring tension you need to properly distribute the tongue weight of your trailer. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. I cannot advise using 800 lb spring bars on a trailer with a 858 lb tongue weight. Exceeding the capacity of the spring bars will certainly lead to poor performance as your existing bars would be over loaded. In the worst case scenario, they could bend or even break possibly causing vehicle damage or personal injury. Upgrading to the 1200 lb spring bars would be a good idea. You would use part # RP66009, you would need two of them.
