Weight Distribution for a Trailer Weighing 4,500 to 7,000 Pounds

Question:

I have an enclosed trailer and I will be trailering a variety of weights. As of right now, I will be hauling a gross weight of as little as 4500lbs up to 7000lbs. I will be trailering 5500lbs when I first setup my weight distribution hitch. Since there are parts that will be bolted to the trailer frame, will the location of them be an issue when I tow more or less weight on the trailer? When I tow 4500lb or up to 7000lb, will the location of the brackets be able to stay the same? I dont want to drill multiple holes in the trailer frame. Thank you

The good news is the brackets that install on the trailer frame will stay in that one position so you won't have to worry about drilling anymore than would be required for a given weight distribution system.

Since your gross trailer weight will be as little as 4,500 pounds and as much as 7,000 that would put the tongue weight at about 450 pounds at the lowest to 1,050 pounds at the highest. You also would add to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

The spring bars included with Reese Strait-Line system # RP66083 are rated for 400 to 800 pounds tongue weight so it would not cover the higher end of the possible tongue weight range of your trailer. So what you could do is also get 2 of spring bars # RP66009. These bars are rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight. So you would basically use two different sets of bars to cover the whole range. For a ball use # 19286.

Another option is to use Equal-I-zer system # EQ37120ET. Technically the minimum tongue weight for this system is 400 pounds with a max of 1,200. Though at the low end the system can create a stiff ride. The ball is included with this system. I have linked a video review of this system.

I have included some links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you as well.
