Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-446 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12-1/4-inch left hand electric brake assembly. This is for a 15,000-pound axle. Now, electric brakes will require only an electric brake controller. We do sell those separately on our website. There is no actuator hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. This brake assembly uses the forward self-adjust feature and you can tell by looking at, there is a cable here that goes around the pulley and attaches to the lever on the adjustment gear.

This is a self-adjusting brake which does not require periodic manual adjustment like standard brakes. When you're going forward it will automatically adjust your brakes for you. Now, this one uses a durable cast backing plate. The configuration on this assembly is left hand, driver's side, and the way to tell that . Now, on a new assembly it will always have a sticker that you can go by but if the sticker wasn't there, the easiest way is just look at the length of the pad on the shoes. This one goes from here to here and the pad on the other shoe goes all the way from here to here.

This is the longer pad and this is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is the primary shoe and that will always face the front of the trailer so that'll tell you that this is a left hand, driver side, assembly. Now, the sizing on the brake assembly, this is a 12-1/4 inch by 5 inch. That measurement they get from the diameter, the 12-1/4 will be measured here to here. If we put a ruler edge-to-edge, 12-1/4 inches. The 5 inches would be the width on the brake pad itself, from here to here.

If we put the ruler on there, you can see right at 5 inches, so 12-1/4 by 5 inches. Now, this brake assembly does use a seven-bolt mounting flange. You can see the seven holes right here and that would attach to a weven-bolt brake mounting flange on your axle. Now, the mounting bolts to install this, we do sell those separately on our website. This is designed for axles up to 15,000 pounds and these are electric brakes so you'll notice in the rear .. Turn this around ...

there's two wires coming out the back so they do need to be connected to power and grounded. They are both blue wires so it doesn't matter which one is which. One will go to the ground. The other will go to the brake feed. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12-1/4-inch left hand electric brake assembly for 15,000-pound axles.

See what our Experts say about this Dexter Accessories and Parts

  • Trailer Brake Assemblies are Upside Down and on the Wrong Sides of the Axles
No problem, we can get this sorted out. The first thing I want you to look at are the centers of the axles. Round trailer axles have a bow in them so the centers of the axles should be higher than the ends. When weight is put on them they straighten out. That is part of how they get their capacity. If the axles on your trailer are upside down then the bows would be pointed down. It is possible the previous owner literally flipped the axles and that could be why the brakes are upside down...

  • Is Dexter 12-1/4 x 5 Brake Assembly # 23-446 Compatible with Dexter Hub/Drum Assembly # 8-285-11UC3
I did not find any purchase history for you but the electric drum brake that you referenced, Dexter # 23-446, is a left-hand 12-1/4 x 5-inch-wide brake. Its matching right-hand part is # 23-447. The hub/drum you referenced, Dexter part # 8-285-11UC3, is a 12-1/4 diameter x 3-3/8-inch-wide hub. These parts do not work together. The brake is rated for 15,000-lb axles while the hub/drum is rated for 8000-lb axles. Both their sizes and weight ratings are incompatible with each other. You will...
