Video Transcript for Review of Blue Ox Replacement 550 lbs TW SwayPro Spring Bars - BXW4005

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at these Blue Ox replacement spring bars for your SwayPro weight distribution system. Now this kit is going to include the two spring bars, lift chains and necessary hardware needed to replace your SwayPro spring bars. Now, one of the really nice things about the SwayPro system is that you can simply switch out your spring bars. So if you get a lighter trailer or a heavier trailer make sure that your ride is gonna be nice and smooth.

You can simply switch out the spring bars so that it's got the right weight capacity for you, rather than having to get a whole new system. So we do have lots of different spring bar sets that will range from tongue weight of 200 pounds up to the tongue weight of 2000 pounds. So you just need to make sure that you're getting the right set for your setups tongue weight. The bars do all look very similar. They are going to have slight thickness differences but the easiest way to tell which bar set you have, they use a dot system.

So the 350 pound bars are not gonna have a dot. Your 550 pound max tongue weight is gonna have one dot, like we have here. So these are our 550 pound max tongue weight. But then on that list there you can see those dots on the right side. So it goes up to five dots for your 2000 pound tongue weight rating.

So just make sure you're getting the right one for your setup so that it's not gonna be too rigid and it's going to engage properly for you. All these sets are going to work with both your older locking pin style pivot tubes. So they've got the divot there on the top. So your locking pin will grab onto that to secure these into your head unit. And they are also going to work with your newer style through-pin style locking tube so that you can get that pin passed all the way through there to secure that.

So whether you have the older style or the newer this will work great for you. These are made here in the USA. So you can trust they're made to the high quality standards we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the US. But more than that, because they are a Blue Ox product you can trust they are gonna fit right into your SwayPro system. And you're not gonna have any issues with it. It's just going to accommodate for either replacing spring bars that you already have or adjusting your setup for that different tongue weight. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Great product, good price, and quick delivery. Long time etrailer customer, and they consistently provide a top notch service.

by:

These Spring Bars by Blue Ox were purchased due to our purchase of a lighter camper. With a smaller tongue weight, I bought the 550lbs TW bars which match our new camper perfectly. That's the beauty of the Blue Ox system. The Etrailer personnel, Hally. was very knowledgeable and polite.

by:

These spring bars have a better temper to them than the original spring bars that came with the hitch. I would highly recommend.

No problems, fast service as always

  • Can Blue Ox Sway Pro Weight Distribution Hitch w/ 1-Dot Spring Bars Handle 600 lb Tongue Weight
The Blue Ox Sway Pro spring bars with one dot or dimple are rated for up to 550 lbs, so I'd recommend replacing the spring bars using the 750 lb rated # BXW4006 if the tongue weight of the loaded trailer is less than 750 lbs (including the weight of anything stowed in the truck bed or cargo area behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle). If the as-towed tongue weight is greater than 750 lbs, use # BXW4007 which are good for 750-1000 lbs of tongue weight. If you don't know the as-towed tongue...

  • How to Determine Capacity of a Blue Ox Weight Distribution System?
I will be happy to help you. The Blue Ox weight distribution systems like the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control item # BXW1500 all use the same head. The bars are the component that determines the capacity of the system. The Blue Ox has a dimple system on their spring bars. It is near the base of the bar where it goes into the head. I have linked a picture to show you where to look. No dimples means it is rated for up to 350 lbs total tongue weight. One dimple means...

  • What Spring Bars Should I Use on my Blue Ox SwayPro WD System for a 3,500 lb Dry Weight Trailer
When you are looking at a Weight Distribution System, you are going to want to base the weight rating off of the Tongue Weight (TW) of your loaded and ready-to-go trailer, plus any cargo that will be behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Since the ideal TW of a trailer is 10-15 percent of the Gross Trailer Weight, the Blue Ox Spring Bars that are rated for 350-550 lbs # BXW4005 will work well if your TW plus any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle does not exceed 550 lbs. • Effect of Swapping Spring Bars on Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution
That is correct, you can swap out the spring bars on the # BXW0350 for higher rated spring bars. The head and the shank have a rating high enough to handle any of the spring bars. Changing the bars will alter the tongue weight range of the system which is what you want to focus on when choosing a system/spring bars. The gross towing weight will be 10x the max tongue weight in the tongue weight range or you could view it as the max tongue weight is 10% of the gross towing weight. For example,...

Blue Ox has an easy system for determining the weight capacity of your spring bars, whereas other companies may use measurements or printed capacity to assist. With Blue Ox, there is a 5 dimple system: No dimples means it is rated for up to 350 lbs total tongue weight. One dimple means it is rated for up to 550 lbs. Two dimples indicates up to 750 lbs. Three dimples indicates up to 1,000 lbs. Four dimples indicates up to 1,500 lbs tongue weight. Five dimples indicates up to 2,000 lbs...

  • How to Adjust Weight Rating of Weight Distribution Hitch to Match Loaded Trailer Tongue Weight
As long as your camper's frame is made of steel and the manufacturer approves use of a weight distribution hitch such as the Blue Ox Sway Pro # BXW0750 you won't hurt the trailer by installing it but you also won't get the best performance from it if the spring bars are rated so much higher than your actual loaded trailer tongue weight. The actual fully-loaded trailer's tongue weight (TW) should fall in the middle of the system's operating range. If the tow vehicle has any cargo behind...

  • Troubleshooting Sway With Blue Ox Weight Distribution Hitch With 3 Dots On Spring Bars
Based on the information you have given me it sounds like you have the Replacement Spring Bars for Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System - 1,000 lbs TW # BXW4007 on your current system which are rated for 750-1,000 lbs of tongue weight. This would mean that your current setup is potentially overrated. An overrated system can cause a rigid ride and a bouncy trailer, which may be partially or completely responsible for what you're experiencing. I say potentially overrated since it sounds...

If you have a different tongue weight outside of this range, you'd need to purchase new spring bars for that weight which is the case for almost all weight distribution systems, they don't come with. • Clamp-On Weight Distribution System Needed for a Variety of Trailer Sizes
We do have a weight distribution (WD) system that will fit your various trailer size needs, but if your current trailer hitch/ball mount is already hitting the ground during some of the driveways you have to turn in to I'm not sure if adding a WD system to the mix is a good idea. The shank and head unit will hit the ground and if your driveways are steep enough I doubt the bars are meant to flex that much. If you still need the WD system then the Blue Ox SwayPro systems have clamp-on brackets...

From what I have found, the 749 lbs on your Grand Designs Transcend 297QB is the dry tongue weight. Since you will have propane and other cargo in the trailer that will definitely be over the 750 lb maximum for your current spring bars. Also, any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 will be considered tongue weight as well. Since you will be over 750 lbs that means that the spring bars for your current setup won't be effective. You will want to add the Replacement...

Since your tongue weight is 385 lbs you are over the rating of your 350 lb tongue weight system so going to higher rated spring bars like part # BXW4005 will be your best option. This will help reduce sway and also improve the handling and braking of the tow setup as well.

Technically, as long as the system will fit the trailers (have a frame height between 3" and 6"), even if they are much lighter you can use the SwayPro system you asked about with a 2,000 lb tongue weight rating: - Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - Underslung - 20K GTW, 2K TW # BXW2003 The issue though, is that with a system rated so much higher than needed, the ride will be very stiff and rigid, and the trailer will bounce a lot to the point that it would...

  • Should Blue Ox SwayPro Spring Bars Be Replaced for Significantly Lighter Travel Trailer
You'll have a very rough ride if you use the bars you currently have, so I'd definitely recommend going with lower rated spring bars. It wouldn't be a bad idea to load up your travel trailer as it would normally be when you pull it and determine the actual tongue weight. I'll link you to an article that shows a couple of different ways of doing this, but the easiest way to do it would be to use a payload/tongue weight scale like the etrailer, part # e99044. • Are Long or Short Torsion Arms Better for a Weight Distribution System
The reason long bars on weight distribution (WD) systems, like the Strait-Line # RP66074, are so popular is because that means the clamps for the trailer frame will sit about 30" away from the coupler. Typically this avoids items that sit on the tongue, like propane tanks. Short arms are a great substitute for when things like propane tanks get in the way. There really is no advantage or disadvantage of using long or short arms other than the location of other things on the tongue of your...

There isn't an exact science to this since each trailer is different. Most applications need about five links showing, but this isn't a set rule. For a greater load weight, use more links; for a smaller load weight, use fewer links. You should be using enough strength to secure the bar and chain on the bracket to where it's tight but not overly strenuous to secure. Using spring bars that are rated for a higher capacity can lead to a rigid trailer ride. An over-rated weight rating on your spring bars can even cause bounce leading to traction issues with the trailer. The total tongue weight is the loaded trailer tongue weight along with any cargo weight behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. That weight combination...
