Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

How to Manually Adjust Trailer Brakes

The more miles you put on your trailer, the more your brake pads will wear down. As they lose contact with the drum, stopping distances get longer and longer. To keep your brakes working great, it's important to adjust them pretty routinely. For this job, grab a floor jack and either a brake adjustment tool (sold separately) or just a standard flathead screwdriver.

Jack up your trailer enough to get the wheel(s) off the ground. Remove the adjuster plugs from the backing plate on the brake, and insert the flat end of the tool through the back of the assembly.

Screenshot from an instruction video shows how to manually adjust the the alignment on a drum brake

Push in on the star gear and lift it up. Keep doing this until the brake pads catch on your drum. When you can't spin your wheel by hand anymore, back the gear off by about 10 clicks by pushing down on the star gear. Does the wheel now spin freely (even if it sounds like the brake pads drag slightly on the drum)? Great! Then you're all done with that one and ready to adjust the rest.

How to Break In New Brakes

After you get these brakes installed and adjusted, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

They're genuine Dexter, they do what they are supposed to do. I was disappointed in etrailer for taking so long to get them. I use etrailer as my Dexter vendor, if they can't do any better I will be shopping elsewhere. If I wanted knock-off brand I would shop Amazon.

I received 3 boxes all of which had some sort of damaged or destroyed parts in it. All of the bearing kits are garbage, I will need replacements. The back plate and pad assemblies were ok, only two I had to installed the adjuster bolt back into and inspect for damage, but only received 2 of 4 nut and plug kits seen in pictures attached. Everything was improperly boxed, boxes are way too large for these components and hardware/bearing kits were packaged with very heavy components. Bearing kits should have been shipped separately in a small package. Bearing kit was also not in a proper bag, if not a ziploc at least tape the bag shut. I hope the drums are ok, I will have to grind on 2 of them just to allow the wheel to mate properly. I will have to measure all of the races and drum dimensions to ensure they are not warped or bent in any way. Extremely unhappy with this purchase. What a waste of components.

Original equipment and fit perfectly. Nothing like new brakes. E-trailer was out of stock and still got it to me within a week.

by:

If your trailer brakes are like mine were this is the item for you. I purchased a used excavator and it came with a trailer, well the trailer was thrown into the deal for a reason. All the brakes for both axels had multiple problems, cracked shoes, bad magnets, various rusted parts. After totaling the cost of all the individual items I would need, the cost of a brand new brake kit was only a little more and much more easy to replace, five mounting bolts off five on. I do recommend one thing, in the instructions your given the torque setting for the bolts, so Dexter must feel it's important, so use a torque wrench, rent one if you don't own one.

After sorting the correct size with the MFG and eTrailer, it was a breeze ordering them and installing them.

After a year of using the brakes everything is working well and as expected

by:

Exact replacement. One year later and the brakes are working great. About 2000 miles.

by:

I managed to get them on, using new wires from vehicle to brakes and marine grade glued crimp-on connectors near the end of last season. Kept the boat and trailer covered and up against the wall of the house for the winter. But mid summer I hooked up the truck and the brakes did not work. The emergency battery does not charge either when plug is connected. After spending all last summer working on the trailer, I spent this summer working on the boat, and just am not willing to get into why the brakes don't work. Ford F-150 does not match color codes. There should be more information about how to identify proper wires from truck to trailer wires, or what should be hot when. I never found a lead that was always hot, whether the key was in or out or on or off or engine running. But last season, everything worked for state inspection. All I know is it was a real science project last year, one I don't wish to repeat. Maybe it is a fuse on the truck. I don't care this year.

by:

Installation was relatively simple. Cut the existing electric brake wires and remove the backing plate with shoes assembly. Follow by installing the new brake assembly and connect the electrical wires. We use this trailer often through the spring, summer, and fall to transport our race car, and the brakes have performed flawlessly!

by:

These are the real deal. Original Dexter components. Great quality and fitment. Came with new locknuts for assembly. Easy, do it yourself replacement. My wires were long enough to connect before I placed these on the axle which made it a much easier job than trying to connect the wires with the backing plates installed. These were installed on a Cronkhite 2000 series 12300lb equipment trailer with Dexter 6000lb axles. Exact replacement. Great packaging and very quick delivery from eTrailer.

by:

Worked exactly as described, came with all new hardware. Quality A+

by:

Got them today and already have them installed. I thought I ordered them the day before but there are a lot of steps to order. I used pay Pal.when I realized I hadn’t got a confirmation I went back and finished the process.

by:

Easy install, good instructions...1 year later and having no problems.

by:

Product worked as intended

by:

So far great

by:

Great price on the set of these OEM replacements. I was skeptical that I would be receiving left and right in the set for the posted price. Local trailer parts store was selling a single left or right non-dexter for almost as much.

1 year update, I should have done this sooner. The whole rig stops better as expected, clearly safer. I run the trailer daily with it loaded, and I’m very happy with the reduced wear on my truck’s brakes.

by:

Fit perfect work outstanding! I bought these assemblies because they are Made in the USA. Only way to go.

by:

These brake assemblies were an easy replacement for the original brakes on our 1973 Airstream Argosy travel trailer.

by:

Got exactly what i ordered in timely fashion makes for quick replacment if the braking system on my trailer.

by:

Parts arrived quickly and were packaged well, came with the nuts to secure the brake plate to the axle. Brakes work as they should, well worth the money.

A year later the trailer still stops great, probably put 8000 miles or better on it. It also runs during the winter in upstate NY, salt is hard on things here. Definitely satisfied with my purchase.

by:

I have not installed the brakes yet. They came well packed with great instructions. The video on etrailer on how to remove the old and replace with new should make the job easy.

by:

Package was delivered in record time. Everything fit, no issues with missing parts. Was complete with a simple installation. Took approximately 1 1/2 per wheel including repacking of wheel bearings.

by:

parts and pricing was fair, had shipping issue on first part of order, (in photo), called to let them know, was no issue and items lost were replaced in a timely manner, will buy from etrailer again, no problem

by:

Joshua B was very helpful figuring out which hub seal I needed. Both the seals and brake assemblies are good quality and fit correctly. You get what you pay for as the old saying goes.

by:

Every thing was great price fit speedy delivery and a great customer service rep who helped me get the right parts the first time. Gwen is my go to person for the right parts. R trailer is great

  • Are Trailer Brakes Supposed to Activate all At Same Time
When trailer brakes are wired up properly they all activate at the exact time so that you have maximum braking power and efficiency. If they all came on at different times that would not be ideal at all. I attached a diagram that shows how tandem brake axles are normally wired up.

There are also Brake Mounting Flange for 2-3/8" Round Axles # 4-35 and Trailer Brake Mounting Flange for 3-1/2" Axles # 4-50. • Troubleshooting Electric Trailer Brake Assembly Magnets
We have an article to assist with checking your brake magnets like you are stating. The resistance will go down because the brake magnets are connected in parallel. You obviously already have a multimeter like # PT89ZR so if you determine based on the article that you need to replace magnets, I recommend # BP01-180 for 12 inch Dexter assemblies...

A short in the wiring to the back axle brakes could be the cause. During your thorough inspection of the wiring, look for any pinched, frayed, or damaged wires would...
