Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Maintenance

With standard electric brake assemblies, you need to manually adjust them every now and then to make sure you're getting the shortest stopping distance every time you tow.

A trailer drum brake with a red callout shows the location of a tension cable and pulley on a self-adjusting trailer brake.

With self-adjusting brakes, though, you'll always have peak stopping power - simple as that! As the brake pads wear over time, a tensioning cable will automatically keep the pads in alignment so they'll consistently make contact with your drum when you brake. You won't have to do tedious manual adjustments anymore.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

Dexter invests a lot of resources to ensure that these brakes meet the requirements for certification set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Basically, a CSA certification tells you that these trailer brakes are well built and safe for use on the road.

How to Break In New Brakes

Once you get these brakes installed, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

Outstanding is the word that comes to mind regarding my experience with the brake kits that I received from etrailer!
I purchased a used Airstream and the brakes were toast.
I called etrailer and spoke to Joseph and he set me up with the kits I needed.
They arrived in 3 days with free shipping and I had all 4 installed in about 2.5 hours on a Saturday morning.
I would definitely do business with these guys again. It was painless!!!

Great!

by:

Once I received undamaged assemblies the install was straight forward. I was happy with customer service in exchanging parts. Brakes seem to work fine…(have not had to panic stop yet) Only complaint was the burnishing process. (Burnishing procedure is required for all brands of trailer brakes)

by:

Just like to say that those self-adjusting brakes that I bought a year ago working fine way better that my old breaks that I had to adjust myself you got yourself a satisfied customer etrailer

Brkes survived winter storage without locking up and still work perfectly!

by:

My Brake order was delivered on time .Brake assemblies were in seperate boxes (4) which were in a oversised box allowing them to bang around and dislodge the shoes on one assemblies.Trip to Orilleys auto parts for tools to take assembly apart and reline shoes again .Couple of Hrs. wasted.

by:

Very nice brake set up. Delivered as stated. Installation was a snap.
Pre lubed hubs are the way to go. Just slide them on and set the tension.
One dust cap was dented in shipping or packaging? But did not defray from the product quality.

by:

The Dexter brake kit was easy to install and are working great. I recommend that you also replace the brake drums as well. I didn't replace mine and the magnets are already getting grooves in them from the worn drums. Next time, I will replace the brakes and drums at the same time.

by:

Exact replacement for original brakes and way less expensive than rebuilding the brakes part by part. I like the made in America labels too!

by:

I ordered 4 brake assembles for my Fifth wheel trailer to be delivered to an RV park we were staying in. They arrived on the day they said they would when I put in the order. Well packaged. Replaced my worn out brakes perfectly. I have ordered from etrailer a few times now and have yet to disappointed with delivery or product.

by:

Easy Peasy to install. Just need a chisel, snap ring pliers, and 36mm socket to get the drums off. (Never-Lube bearings) Then a 9/16" socket and some wire cutters to get off the backing plate. Be sure to get heatshrinking crimp-on connectors to reattach the wires behind the backing plate. Everything went together smoothly. Still need to tow the trailer and let the self adjusters do their thing, but it'll be awhile before our next trip.
FWIW we have an Airstream with about 50K miles on it and I replaced the brakes as a precaution. They actually still had many miles remaining on the linings and magnet.

Still working fine. Have put many miles on the new brakes - like participating in a caravan that went around the island of Newfoundland for two months...

by:

William was a great help with his advice on replacing my trailer brakes and hubs and what parts and equipment I needed. I purchased with total confidence. To my amazement the parts arrived in two days! Outstanding service from a company I've come to know and trust over many years.

by:

Every thing went well. Excellent servic e!

by:

Everything fit and works as it should.

by:

I recently completed a brake upgrade on my trailer. The new Never Adjust Dexter Brakes went on flawlessly. I found the process to be straight forward. The self-adjusting feature was an upgrade from the previous brakes but bolted on with no issues. I like the idea of not needing to adjust brakes as the pads wear down. I needed all new brakes, this seemed like the best decision for replacements.

by:

Easy to Install. Working great.

by:

Brakes were perfect fit and still working great.
Would highly recommend.

by:

Parts arrived quickly and installed properly. Good follow-up after the sale. Overall a positive experience.

by:

Great customer service! Excellent help finding the correct parts. I had some unusual issues that where resolved quickly. Was even provided a direct phone number. Don't get that kind of service much these days!

The whole experience of ordering my replacement brake assemblies was awesome. Teresa did a fantastic job of figuring out which parts I needed. I would not hesitate to order parts from e-trailer in the future. The quality and fit-up of the Dexter brake assemblies made repairing my rv easier than I could have imagined. I am one happy camper. Thank you for an awesome consumer experience from start to finish.

  • What Bolt Pattern Holds Hub/Drums # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K to Axle
The hub/drums part # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K that you referenced don't attach to braking flanges but the brake assemblies that normally get used with these like part # 23-458-459 attach using a 5 bolt pattern. Hubs attach with a spindle nut like what you see in the attached install video.

Yes, the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-180-181 will fit the 5,200lb AL-KO axles. I recommend the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-458-459. This will allow the brakes to self adjust meaning less hassle for you adjusting brakes.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes on One Side that Apply Harder than the Other
The issue seems to be different adjustment than the other side. Most likely the time delayed onset of the braking pressure is locking up the one side of the trailer before the other due to it being a tighter adjustment. What you can do is tow the trailer around at a slower speed and apply the trailer brakes with your override lever several times and witch each application they will tighten by one click until they are equally tightened between both sides.

  • Replacement Trailer Axle to Replace Trailer with Older Style Brakes that Are Outdated
I wish we could help, but only option we can point you towards would be new axles as what you sent in a picture of is not compatible with anything we sell. You are going to need to measure your current axles in a few places to get the correct one as we don't have access to what your numbers reference. You will need to measure from hub face to hub face and then from the spring seat centers. You will also need to know what bolt pattern you have on your current hubs. I attached a help article...

  • Is There a Kit That Can Convert Dexter Manual Adjusting Brakes Over to Nev-R-Adjust Brakes?
I spoke to Dexter and the # DX43QR will be the replacement kit for 12" Electric Nev-R-Adjust brakes. Unfortunately, they said adding this on to your manual adjusting brakes will not make them work the same as the Nev-R-Adjust ones. If you want to get the Nev-R-Adjust brakes on your trailer, you will need to go with the # 23-464-465 for a 7,000 pound axle, or the # 23-458-459 for a 6,000 pound axle. Both of these options will fit your 8-219 hub/drum without issue.

  • Will Switching From a Drop Axle to a Straight Axle Increase Tire Clearance
The 175/80-13 tire that you have now is 24" diameter x 6.9" wide and the new 225/75-15 tire is 28.3" diameter x 8.9" wide. Therefore, the new tire size will be 4.3" larger in overall diameter and 2" larger in overall width. However, you will only need to account for half of each measurement so 2.15" for diameter and 1" for width. The conversion from the 4" drop axle you have now to a straight axle is actually going to bring the spindle down in line with the axle which means you are actually...

The metal strip in your brake shoe is not normal. It must be some kind of manufacture defect and that batch of brake shoes all had it for you to have this on more than one.
