Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Maintenance

With standard electric brake assemblies, you need to manually adjust them every now and then to make sure you're getting the shortest stopping distance every time you tow.

A trailer drum brake with a red callout shows the location of a tension cable and pulley on a self-adjusting trailer brake.

With self-adjusting brakes, though, you'll always have peak stopping power - simple as that! As the brake pads wear over time, a tensioning cable will automatically keep the pads in alignment so they'll consistently make contact with your drum when you brake. You won't have to do tedious manual adjustments anymore.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

Dexter invests a lot of resources to ensure that these brakes meet the requirements for certification set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Basically, a CSA certification tells you that these trailer brakes are well-built and safe for use on the road.

How to Break In New Brakes

Once you get these brakes installed, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

@Tommy They do work very well! Why would anyone go with manual brake assemblies when these are available?

Great no issues putting it on trailer

by:

I have been running these brake assemblies in my 14' dump trailer for a year now. I've logged somewhere close to 5K miles on the trailer carrying loads that sometimes had me thinking I'm glad to have G-rated tires on there!. I have not had to adjust them manually in any way and they have performed flawlessly. I won't even think about putting anything else on my trailers.

by:

Good product. Had to reset a couple assemblies that may have come apart during shipping. The big box of loose heavy parts doesn’t work well. All else is great.
Also, I paid for early 3 day shipping and they arrived in 7 days. Will ask for refund of extra shipping costs.

by:

Came right when they said it would and the install was supper easy. Hardest part was getting the old parts off. No issues whatsoever, I highly recommend using the Dexter Self-adjusting brakes. See the before and after photos. Etrailer is the place to buy your products.

by:

I thought the price was high, but it makes repair and easy in and out installation.

by:

They arrived when promised. What I really like best about the backplates is they are made in the good old USA and they installed perfectly. Thank you Dexter and eTrailer. Terri N. was very helpful as well!

by:

Parts arrived well packaged and sooner than expected. Easy install and quality parts. Break in was a little tough to get done by manufacture steps but completed and the new brakes seem fine. Little pricy but seem ok right now.

by:

no problem putting them on a girl can do it

by:

All parts arrived timely as always. All parts fit, the install videos are very good. All the things that makes etrailer the best to get parts for my rv. The install is easy, the most difficult activity was removing the old parts.

by:

Everything fit properly and installation went smoothly. All needed parts were included, which was nice. The self-adjust worked well and break-in was quick.
I've only put about 1500 miles on the trailer since install, so I can't speak to longevity.
I'd buy them again though.

by:

Just received and unboxed today, product looks excellent just as I would expect from Dexter. Should be a easy install.

Great, stopping power is fantastic!

same as original easy to install would order again

by:

Customer service was great to work with. Parts arrived timely, undamaged, fit, and have been working great so far. Very happy.

by:

It didn't help give me any more braking than I had. Eventually I had to upgrade to electric over hydraulic brakes which cost me $[XX].

by:

Diana was very helpful when ordering these brakes. The prices are good and everything arrived at the promised time in good condition. The brakes are an exact replacement of the original and everything went together well. One of the easiest brake jobs I’ve ever done. I recommend etrailer and will buy from them again.

After one year the brakes are working as expected. I really like the way they self adjust.

by:

Fast shipping (2 days) and shipped in original packaging. Easy installation.

by:

Work as advertised. No longer have to worry about the trailers braking power!

by:

Order arrived on time, Quinn is very helpful and stays on top of the orders

by:

Very easy to swap these new assemblies onto the trailer. Remove the five nuts, pull-off old assembly assembly and you're ready to install new brakes. Not having to pull the individual components off as is done on a car makes this a snap. Looking forward to see how well self-adjustment feature really works.

by:

Best replacement brake assembly for dexter 7k axles! Never thought my mammoth trailer could stop so well.

by:

Replaced all parts with equipment made in the USA. etrailer is fantastic. Their customer service is fantastic.

by:

Great product. Very easy installation.

by:

Exact fit and great price. This is by far the easiest way to replace trailer brakes. etrailer is always a pleasure to business with. Fast free shipping.

  • Will the Dexter 7,000 Lb Electric Braking Assemblies Fit a 5,200 Lb Axle
Yes, the 5,200 lb and 7,000 lb trailer axles will have the same five bolt brake mounting flange so you can swap braking assemblies out between the two. That said, the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # 23-464-465 which is for 7,000 lb axles will have a stronger magnet than the ones for a 5,200 lb or 6,000 lb axle for example. If more stopping power is what you are looking for then this would be just want you need.

This is a direct Lippert replacement for 7,000 pound axles and the V000209130 number you found confirmed it. This number indicates that your axles use the # 25580 inner bearing and # 14125A outer bearing, which this drum also uses and includes. As long as your 5000lb axle uses 12" x 2" brakes like a typical 5200-7000lb axle then the stronger 7000lb brake assemblies will fit just fine. They will provide stronger braking, but that is not necessarily better. But if you cannot lock up the wheels with your current brakes, going with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer...
