Excellent. Be sure your axle bearing seals are not leaking grease onto the backing plate.

Brakes work great! I used a self tapping screw to ground the brake to the trailer. This worked really well and I didn't need to run a ground wire. The studs needed a trip to the hardware store to get some 7/16 by 40 pitch (fine thread) nylock nuts. All in all a nice brake setup.

The brakes work great! Im really happy that I took the time to install them.

Needed to replace a magnet and brake shoes were well worn, this was the best way to go. Quick and easy replacement.

Absolutely the best service on the web. Immediate notification of the order, packing, shipping, and arrival. Got all the parts and they were perfect...just as expected. Watching the eTrailer video also helped a ton on swapping out the bearings and races. Wiil be back at their door for more!!!

I feel a lot better knowing I have a new and working brake system on my vintage 1973 Shasta travel trailer. Thank you and for the very fast shipping. Arrived sooner than expected.

Cleaned and packed my bearings and all 4 brakes on my new to me trailer and did my first trip, 5 days from FL to VA and back, trailer and brakes did great!

Perfect replacement for my trailer. etrailer is only place I buy trailer related parts from. Always excellent service. Fastest shipping in the industry.

I purchased 4 of the Nev-R-Just drums for my 1999 enclosed trailer. I had been fighting the elec brakes in that trailer for years, re-wiring the drums and replacing the magnets on some of them. But I just got tired of it and found these had great reviews, are made in the USA and quite reasonably priced. Shipping was super-fast, but I only live a couple of hundred miles from where they shipped.

The worst part of the install was getting the old drums off. I think they used some kind of crushed nut type lock nut on them at the factory as they were HARD to turn the whole way out. And I had soaked them with PB Blaster for a couple of days before hand, as well as using WD40 during the extract. I could only get my impact on 1, maybe 2 nuts per wheel because of interference. I had 4 of the studs break loose from the old drums and just start turning. I had to use my die grinder on the brake shoe side to get the assembly off. Quite a job there.

But the new stuff bolted up nicely. I soldered all the wires, used heat shrink tubing and the split loom tubing on top of that. So a nice, clean install that will hopefully last for years. I've towed the trailer once since the install and the difference is very clear. So nice to have all 4 brakes working well again.

Only gave it 4 out of 5 for two reasons. First is the test of time. I think these will last for years, based on the reviews, but only time can determine that. Second is the lack of includes. I did see from the reviews I needed to order the nuts and lock washers, but missed that I'd need the rubber plugs for the adjuster holes on the back. These have two of those holes per drum where my old ones only had one. So I ended up 4 short and am now searching for them. It would be nice if they added $2-3 per wheel and just included that stuff.

I agree.. why would we not need nuts, washers n plugs... thought that was not right to leave out..spent more time acquiring nuts than doing the installation...cheap...

Last Saturday, after several weeks of research, my wife and I purchased a trailer. It had everything we wanted except for brakes. I asked the dealer if they could install brakes, he said it would take weeks if not longer for him to get the parts and then he would have to arrange for them to be installed.

I told the dealer that I had already done some preliminary research on eTrailer.com for brake parts. On a long shot, I asked the dealer if he could beat eTrailer.com prices for the brake parts and if so I would install. To the dealer's credit, he told me I would be much better off getting the brake parts I needed on my own. So, late Sunday evening I went onto the eTrailer.com website. After taking a couple of measurements to ensure I was ordering the correct parts, I placed the order. Their website is user friendly and intuitive, and the tutorial videos are excellent.

Early Monday morning I got a message from one of eTrailer's employees notifying me that my parts had shipped. He also offered his services if I needed anything further or if I had any questions. I did have questions, so I called him, I wanted to confirm that I had ordered the correct bolt pattern for the hub/drums. Within a couple of minutes we confirmed that I had taken the correct measurements. The reassuring part was, he said if you find the hub/drums are not the correct ones, let me know and we will get a return label out to you and get the correct parts out to you.

By early Thursday afternoon the parts had arrived. I had already watched the installation tutorial video that is on their website. Following the video process, the install was straight forward and PAINLESS. This company is so refreshing!

Thanks for the follow up. For almost 10 years now, I have been very happy with the service, products and value that I get from etrailer. So much so, that I refer friends and family to your website as their needs arise. As the mechanic in the family, and around the neighborhood, I often have people approach me for help. Several times a year I find myself referencing etrailers website to find a part we need or that will make a job easier to complete. Additionally, I CANT SAY ENOUGH how helpful etrailers on line video library has been with installations and to help answer questions or trouble shoot problems. I really appreciate that etrailer would take the time and resources to build such a library to help their customers.

The brake pads we received from etrailer.com were EXACTLY what we were looking for. The installation was simple and went very well. Nice product. My trailer is 20 years old and these brakes did the job. Also, we went from standard brakes to self-adjusting so no maintenance is necessary. We can now go camping!

The staff at etrailer (Katie G) were so helpful. We were desperate for the product and she made sure we got the brakes within 3 days. Amazing! Thank you so much. We will definitely use etrailer.com again.

US produced, but like any parts, watch out for slivers and sharp edges. Nice to find an assembled fresh unit for the price of the normal rebuild parts, and with the BONUS of self adjustment! Application of lubricant to adjuster threads and thrust surfaces will help insure longer reliability. Quick friendly service with excellent focus on customer satisfaction. Thank you!

Brakes self adjust well

by:

Heads up!!
ordered 4 sets of hub, drums
and brakes over two years ago for a project I've been slowly working on. when I received the items, I noticed the packaging was damaged and reported it to etrailer. 2 years later, I finally went to use the items and discovered the bearings, caps and races had been damaged. I notified the management at etrailer and within a week had complete replacements.
What company in this day and age is willing to stand behind a damage claim two years on? Truly remarkable customer service and willingness to go the extra mile.
etrailer, You've won me forever as a devoted and satisfied customer. you guys are rock stars! Thank You.

by:

My experience was incredible. I couldn't believe how fast the parts were delivered.

by:

I purchased a left and right brake assy and installed them as per videos and instructions. After towing for 50 miles one side is fine but on the other side both shoes have cracked. I will now have to replace them.

Mike M.

12/10/2014

A follow-up. Within a day of etrailer hearing of my problem, they initiated contact and are replacing the brake assy under warranty. I would have to give them six stars for their customer service and professionalism. Once again the left side was fine so it was probably just a fluke as Dexter parts are usually perfect. I have bought from etrailer.com many times in the past and will continue to do so.

by:

I have been using these brakes for one year, about 3000 miles.

Very happy with the quality and price. These are the OEM Dexter brakes for the 3500 lb axle. These were very easy to install and were an exact fit. Nice feature is the auto adjust when the trailer is backing up. No more lifting the axle and climbing underneath to make sure breaks are properly adjusted.

by:

Order arrived on time, packaging and product were in new condition. Everything looking good so far.

by:

The brake package made for a very quick and easy install. After installing our new brake set we set off across country from the Seattle area all the way to Cape Canaveral, Florida and back. They performed faultlessly for the entire trip. I will mention that I did not do an initial adjustment on the brakes and it seemed like it took quite a number of miles before they were adjusted properly. In hindsight I would probably take more time on the initial adjustment.

My 2012 travel trailer came equipped with 1-3/4” wide brakes, which is not a common size. When it was time to do maintenance I went to etrailer.com because of the wealth of information and advice available. After reading the information it became obvious that the best course of action would be to upgrade to 10 x 2-1/4” brakes and hubs. My supplies arrived in good shape, with the Dexter boxes inside of other boxes from etrailer. After watching helpful videos I installed the new brakes in a day. Things went smoothly, installing new complete brake sets is so much easier than messing around with individual parts, and probably about the same cost. Now came time to wear in the brakes and check things out. Beware that it is really tempting to not wait long enough for the brakes to cool in between evolutions where you apply them hard and go from 40 to 20 MPH. They can get pretty hot. The end result is that now we have much more braking power, the braking is smoother, and we have confidence in our ability to stop which is priceless. Not having to adjust our brakes is a plus. We are very pleased with our Dexter never adjust brakes and especially pleased with the exceptional customer service and expert advice from etrailer. Add in the price guarantee and dealing with them is truly a no-brainer.

by:

This is the exact brake assembly that came on my trailer when it was new (18ft aluminum car hauler by R and R Trailers of Three Rivers MI) . Same part from the same manufacturer. I purchased 4 new ones because after 3 years of non-marine use, one of the brake linings came off and locked up one of the trailer wheels causing it to flat spot one of the tires bad enough to require the tire's replacement.

Shipping: I received them very quickly. But of the 4 assemblies ordered, 2 of them had damaged wiring due to poor packaging by the seller. I considered sending them back, but because I needed to use the trailer soon, I simply repaired the damaged wires and installed them.

Removal: This is not easy or fun. Each of the brake assemblies is held on with 4 mounting studs and nuts. These nuts are 7/16-20 i.e fine thread, which are not included. This wasn't really a problem except that these nuts were not in stock at my local Home Depot, Lowe's, or Tractor Supply. After driving all over the place looking for the mounting nuts, I finally found them at Fastenal. Removing the existing brakes was a nightmare. After soaking the existing mounting nuts in PB Blaster, I tried to remove them to find that they were so difficult to get off that they actually caused the studs to break free from where they had been pressed into the backing plate and just spin freely. Of the 16 mounting studs (4 studs x 4 brake assemblies) only 3 of them actually came off and the rest had to be cut off. This pretty much took all day to accomplish. Again, the existing trailer brakes were the *identical* brake assemblies that I purchased, but with 3 years of highway use. I would expect this much difficulty if it was on a boat trailer due to the regular submersion in water, but I would expect less corrosion on a car hauler.

Installation: Once I had cut off the existing brake assemblies, Installation was not very difficult. Before I mounted them, I took them down to my local welder and had him tack weld the studs in place so that they wouldn't break free from the backing plate when/if I ever needed to remove these again. I anti-seized the studs and mounted them to the trailer & connected the wiring. I had to reuse the star wheel access port plugs because they did not come with new plugs.

I think this is an ok product considering that these brake assemblies adjust themselves as the shoes wear down, and I find this greatly superior to the other method of having to adjust them yourself. I would actually still consider purchasing these brakes again, even after all that.

My complaints are as follows:

- shoe failure after 3 years of highway use resulting in tire failure
- damaged wiring due to poor packaging
- lack of mounting nuts and the difficulty in finding new ones
- lack of new access port plugs,
- *especially* the poor quality of the backing plate and studs

A product with a "made in USA" label just shouldn't have this many issues with it.

by:

Generally speaking the product seems like a good buy. I looked at the different options at Etrailer and decided on the Dexter units even though they were slightly higher - made in USA. My package of parts arrived 3 days after ordering - a good deal considering the freight cost was $0. One of the brake assemblies had the self adjuster knocked halfway of in spite of the stiff spring hold it together to the shoes. I suspect this happened during shipment and due to bulk packing the 4 assemblies in a box. I would suggest that Etrailer warn their customers to look at their parts carefully upon receipt. I also was concerned about one of the 7/16" mounting studs being knocked out. I found the stud in the carton and reset it into the backing plate and did not have any issues in the installation.

All in all the process went well from ordering to installation. I appreciated all of the helpful videos on line that helped with the ordering process and gave me a heads up on making sure to order nuts, washers and plugs for the adjusting ports.

I would have given the review a 5 except for the packaging which could stand a little improvement.

by:

Installed easily and works well. Have about 5000 miles on the brakes. When ordering, make sure the spindle and flange measurements match the brake parts. My 2200 pound axles had flanges and spindles of a 3500 pound axle, so the 7 inch brakes I initially ordered per the application information did not fit.

  • Axle-Less Suspension And Electric Brake For Trailer
I see that you referenced part # ASR5200S01, a 5200 lb axle-less system for your trailer. The Axle-Less systems we offer have bolt patterns of either 5 on 4-1/2 or 4 on 4. We do not currently carry any axle-less systems that have a 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern with that weight capacity. I spoke with my contact at Timbren and they told me they do not offer the 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. I have attached a help article that shows how to measure the bolt pattern of a wheel.
