Question:
Hello, I am looking to add Brakes to my 2012 Carry On 6x12 Single axle trailer. It has 5 on 4 1/2inch lugs and I measured the axle at 2 3/8. Would you be able to help me out with some product placement. So far I am Looking at the following 2- Item Redline Accessories and Parts - 4-35 Brake Flanges 1- Dexter Trailer Brakes - 23-468 LH Electric Brake Drum 1- Dexter Trailer Brakes - 23-469 RH Electric Brake Drum 2- Dexter Trailer Hubs and Drums - 84546UC3 This will be the first Im working on trailer brakes so I want to make sure I have all the pieces I need. I already have my wiring in place Ill just need to tie the brakes into the box I already have by each wheel. I am a welder fabricator so I have no problem installing the flange to the axle. Please let me know if I am on the right track or if I should be looking at other products Thanks!

Adding electric drum brakes to your single-axle trailer requires a few components, including brake flanges, brakes, hub/drums, wiring, a breakaway kit and a brake controller. Each of these is detailed in the linked article which covers the entire process.
Brake flanges must be welded on perfectly straight and concentric or you can have trailer tracking problems, premature tire wear or other issues. Specialized jigs are required. Since you have welding experience as long as you have the required equipment you may be able to weld on flanges yourself. If not you can select a kit that has an axle with flanges already installed or have a reputable local trailer shop do it.
You will need to confirm your axle weight rating in order to choose compatible brakes. There should be a sticker on the axle that states its weight rating. One you know that you can select brakes using the linked page. Let's say you have a 3500-lb axle. For this rating you'll use left and right 10 x 2-1/4-inch brakes such as # 23-468 and # 23-469.
The hub/drum you use will have to match the brake size and use the same bearing set as your original hubs. This is essential for ensuring the new hubs will fit your spindles. If for example your hubs use bearings L68149 and L44649 then you can use hub/drum # 84546UC3.
You'll need to wire the trailer with a plug that matches the type on your tow vehicle, such as part # H20046 for an RV-style 7-way. A junction box like # 38656 and ring terminals # DW05702-1 and # 44-5310A will make for a clean wiring installation for your brakes and lights. You'll also need a breakaway kit like # 20099.
Finally, for a brake controller I suggest the reliable and popular Prodigy P2 # 90885. Installation of this excellent controller depends on the tow vehicle and how it is equipped. Please feel free to let me know your vehicle year/make/model/version and I will be glad to advise on your controller installation. Some vehicles can use a quick-connect wiring adapter, such as # 22292 that fits Ford trucks.
