Parts Needed to Wire Brakes to Trailer

Question:

I am looking to rehook breaks up to a trailer that have been cut. I have a 7 pin connector on my truck and a brake controller wired up for my camper. If i use a 5 flat pin wire harness on my trailer and use an adapter to connect it to my truck, will the breaks work?? or do i need to buy a 7 pin wiring harness and just not hook up the purple and black wire? Thanks

As long as your 5 flat pin supplies brake signals from the brake controller you will be good to go.

The purple (reverse) and black (12 volt) wires are not necessary and can be tied up out of the way. You will also need a 7 to 5 way adapter like # A75TB. Check out the video review of part # A75TB at right.

A better option would be to replace the trailer connector with a 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector like # H20042 and a trailer wiring junction box like # 38656. You will also need ring terminals like # 44-5310A. I have included video reviews of these parts for you to check out.

Also check out the wiring FAQ that I have included at right.
