Bike Rack Bumper Clearance on a 2017 Toyota Prius Prime with the EcoHitch # 306-X7369

Question:

Hi Bob, thanks for the heads-up on the possible contact with the bumper. Besides what you have recommended, Yakima Holdup, do you suggest any other model that might work on my Prius Prime at this point?

Thanks so much for your order! It looks like you purchased the EcoHitch Stealth Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - 2" # 306-X7369. With this particular hitch, we unfortunately do not have the measurements available for the distance of the center of the hitch pinhole to the outside face of the rear bumper of a 2017 model Toyota Prius Prime. With that being said, the Thule T2 Classic # TH9045 will most likely interfere with your rear bumper (when folded up). This is because the measurement from the center of the pinhole to the closest part of the rack is only 3-1/2". Also, this particular rack only fits 1-1/4" hitches.

For a safe comparable alternative, I recommend the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitches # Y02443. The HoldUp comes with the same 60-pound per-bike weight capacity as the T2 Classic but is not limited to a 100-pound maximum like the T2 Classic. Another advantage is that the HoldUp already comes with locks so you do not have to buy them as add-ons. As far as bumper clearance, you will have enough clearance to clear your rear bumper. This is because the HoldUp measures 7 inches from the center of the pinhole to the closest part of the rack (when folded up). It is also designed for 2" hitches. It is important to note that the HoldUp has a maximum tire width of 3 inches wide.

Another option for you is the Saris Freedom # SA4412B or the # SA4412B-FB (for fat bikes up to 5 inches wide). The Freedom is an amazing rack because the cradles on the rack are independently adjusting. With this factor, you will not need to purchase a bike frame adapter bar if you have women's bikes, children's bikes, or bikes with step-thru frames. The rack comes with the same 60 pound per-bike weight capacity of the HoldUp and comes with a long shank. From the shank pinhole to the closest wheel tray, it measures 12 inches (on the # SA4412B) and 10 inches (on the # SA4412B-FB). For theft-deterrence, you need the hitch lock # SA3022 and the Saris Cable Lock # SA981 to protect both the bikes and the rack itself.
