Does the Rim or the Valve Stem Determine the Maximum Pressure

Question:

I have some trans eagle 16ply tires that hold 115 psi and I have 16” rims with all metal valve stems on my dump trailer. Is there any 16” rims that aren’t capable of holding that much air or is it the valve Stem that really matters in this situation?

Expert Reply:

Rims like the Aluminum Split Spoke Trailer Wheel - 16" x 6-1/2" Rim - 8 on 6-1/2 # AM22659HWT do not have a psi rating. Like you said, it is the valve stem that will be the limiting factor for tire pressure. For example, the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem # AM20906 is rated for up to 200 psi where the Americana Rubber, Snap-In Valve Stem # AM20903 can only hold up to 65 psi.
