Hitch Recommendation for my 2010 Subaru Outback

Question:

I am looking for a hitch for my 2010 Subaru Premium Outback to tow a pop-up camper that is approximately 1500-2000 pounds. The camper currently has 7-way wiring plug, and I am not sure what size the ball is. I think that I have a drawbar from my old Subaru in the garage and I would like to re-use but I am not sure what size it is? Thanks for your help!

To tow your pop-up camper you will need the following items:

1. Trailer Hitch Receiver
2. Ball Mount
3. Pin and Clip
4. Trailer Hitch Ball
5. Wiring Harness

For your 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon towing a pop up camper trailer weighing 1500-2000 pounds I would recommend the following products.

1. My recommendation would be the a Class III Hitch - Draw-Tite # 75673. It has a maximum towing capacity of 4000 pounds and a maximum tongue weight of 600 pounds.

2. You had mentioned that you might already have a ball mount (drawbar) that you might be re-using, if that is the case, then the hitch that I have recommended is equipped with a 2 inch receiver. Please make sure that the ball mount and receiver would be compatible. If you cannot find this right away you can get one later on. It might be wise to make sure what size ball the trailer needs before you buy one.

If you need a ball mount I would suggest Curt Ball mount 3/4 inch Rise or 2 inch Drop # C45010.

3. For the Pin and Clip we have the # PC3.

4. For a 1-7/8 inch ball diameters I would recommend the Tow-Ready # 19260. For a 2 inch ball I would recommend the Tow-Ready # 63845.

5. If your vehicle does not already have a 4-pole wiring connecter installed one would have to be installed, like the Curt # 56040. After that is installed another wiring converter is installed to convert to a 7-way for your trailer system. I would recommend the Universal Installation Kit For Trailer Brake # ETBC7 and that will convert the 4-pole to a 7-way for your trailer.

If the trailer is equipped with brakes then you will need a brake controller to activate them I would recommend the Curt # C51140, and the wiring adapter that is compatible with your vehicle # 51515. The Curt # C51140 is a very reliable product and has great feed back. This brake controller is hardwired to your vehicle using the Curt # C51515 wiring adapter and the # ETBC7 4-pole to 7-way wiring harness listed above.

If you need any some clarification of these parts I have included a Helpful Article explaining what you would need for towing.

I have included links to the parts listed above and several videos for your reference.
