Installing a Brake Controller and a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 2005 Ford F-150 With Factory 4-Way

Question:

I am adding a Hopkins Agility HM47294 brake controller with the HM47715 adapter and want to add a 7 and 4 pin connector for trailer connections at the back of the truck. I have the factory flat 4 harness on the truck now and want to know if anyone makes a plug and play harness I could plug in place of the flat 4 harness so I dont have to splice in the blue brake wire and black power wires to the harness like in the 37185 adapter

Unfortunately there are no plug-in adapters or harnesses that would allow you to replace the factory 4-way flat trailer connector with a 7-way or a 7-way and 4-way connector on your 2005 Ford F-150. To complete the installation for a brake controller on your truck, you will need a 7-way adapter like part # 37185 that you referenced.

It sounds like you may be familiar with the installation process, but I have included some installation details below as well as a FAQ article on how to install a brake controller on a 2005 Ford truck with a factory 4-way trailer connector for you to check out.

After finding an appropriate mounting location for the 7-way adapter, follow the factory 4-way connector forward until you find the factory plug on the frame rail (see photo). You will see more wires entering the factory connector on the frame rail than exiting it toward the 4-way connector. The black wire from the 7-way adapter # 37185, will splice into the orange wire for 12 volt power and the blue wire will splice into the blue wire for the electric brake output power from the brake controller. I recommend testing the wires with a circuit tester like part # 40376 before any splicing to ensure you have the correct wires.

I have also attached a brake controller installation video on a 2004 Ford F-150 for you to check out. The brake controller in the video is different from the Hopkins Agility Brake Controller, # HM47294, but the video will help you locate the factory brake controller connector and help you find a good mounting location for the brake controller.
