When comparing the Curt Class II Hitch # C12170 and the Curt Class III Hitch # C13315, there are a few differences. The Curt # C12170 has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening and is designed to fit 1-1/4-inch accessories (such as bike racks and cargo carriers). The Curt # C13315, on the other hand, has a 2-inch receiver opening and is designed to fit 2-inch accessories. Given that this is the case, the # C12170 has a maximum tongue weight of 350 pounds and a maximum gross towing weight of 3,500 pounds. As far as the # C13315, that hitch has a maximum tongue weight of 400 pounds and a maximum gross towing weight of 4,000 pounds.

The way that the hitches attach to your 2021 Mazda CX-5 differ as well. For ground clearance, the # C12170 has a clearance of 13-1/2 inches compared to the 13 inches of the # C13315. If you are worried about bumper clearance with your accessory, the # C12170 measures 3 inches from the center of the pinhole to the face of the hitch while the # C13315 measures right at 3-1/2 inches.

As far as a recommendation, I recommend purchasing the hitch that has the size opening you need. For instance, if you have an accessory that has a 1-1/4 inch shank, I recommend the # C12170. If you have an accessory that has a 2-inch shank, I recommend the # C13315.

If you need assistance with installation, I went ahead and linked installation videos of both of these hitches.
