I've had this on my Mazda CX-5 for the past year, I've used it numerous times, hauling one dirtbike on a hitch carrier, hauling multiple large motorcycles on a Kendon Motorcycle Trailer, and also using my No-Mar tire changer on it as well. It's been super durable and problem free. Hoping for many more years of quality use out of it.

Its been another year now, still going strong, I joined a racing organization so towed a bike at least once a month for 6 months plus a dirtbike trip to Utah from Denver. All is well still

by:

Really happy with this hitch receiver. I'm using it primarily for motorcycle haulers (rather than a trailer), so the tongue weight capacity was important for me. It's rock solid. The way it mounts to the frame makes it pretty easy to install, and to remove the captive nuts that you fish into the frame rails if you end up removing the receiver. I've already had it installed on two different cars in the year that I've had it, and it was pretty fast and easy to move it from one CX-5 to the other. The only downside is that the 2" receiver tube itself is welded just slightly off level (a few degrees clockwise from level), which would not be noticeable at all if you were connecting a trailer, but results in my bike haulers sitting slightly unlevel. Keep in mind if you plan on using it for bike haulers attachments. Overall, I'm really happy with it.

Still working well. Ive removed and installed it on another CX-5 in the past year, so Ive installed and removed it three times already. The mounting hardware is really easy to remove, which makes straightforward to take the receiver off and move it to another vehicle if needed as long as its another CX-5.....

I bought this hitch to use with a hitch-mounted bike rack. I don't have the bike rack yet, but the hitch looks great on my CX-5! I was originally planning on taking it to a shop to have it installed, but ended up installing it myself. My husband helped me lift it into place, but otherwise I installed it by myself in about an hour and half. The installation videos are definitely helpful!

The shipping box that I received the hitch in had a giant hole in it that UPS (I assume) taped up, but the product was still in the box with no damage to the part that was exposed due to the hole. However, there were 2 large scratches on the receiver portion. The damaged area was covered in the tape that was used to secure the baggie of instructions and hardware to the hitch, so it appears that the scratches were already there before the product was boxed up. I still installed the hitch anyway, but have some concerns about rust in those 2 spots.

Thank you for your review. It is understandable that you would be concerned with the scratches on the hitch rusting. I recommend to spray those two spots with a Rust-O-Leum brand spray paint to prevent future rusting.

It still works great for my bike rack!

2019 Mazda CX-5

Appears to be a sturdy, solid hitch, and made in the USA- the best reasons for this purchase. I had my nephew install it on my 2019 Mazda CX-5. There was a little difficulty. He watched the videos and said the video differed in the position of the screws. I guess the video explained they were vertical in position but upon installation he said that they were horizontal which made installation a little more difficult. He’s a mechanically inclined guy, works on mining equipment trucks so I think his install perspective was about accurate. I will test the hitch out once my bike rack arrives but I have confidence in both the product and the installation.

It’s working great! Sound as a pound! I have made recommendations to friends that were looking to get a hitch mounted on their vehicle to go with the Curt hitch for a solid, dependable, made in the USA product.

by:

I installed the Curt trailer hitch receiver myself and it went flawlessly. I first watched etrailer.com's video instructions that was for my specific vehicle and that made the job super easy. I was able to complete the full installation in less than an hour. The hitch fits perfectly and looks OEM. I couldn't be happier.

by:
2020 Mazda CX-5

Very good hitch, solid construction. A DIY person with an extra helper can do this in under an hour. The paper instructions are useless, much watch the video which is great. The one thing I found wrong with the video is it is unnecessary to waste time and effort scraping the seal coating on the bottom frame where the hitch never touches. I agree with removing the sides though.

This is my second purchase from etrailer.com and I am completely satisfied with the product quality and the installation process (that required ZERO drilling.) I was told by the Mazda dealer near me (and the local U-Haul) that there wasn't a hitch available that fit the 2022 model CX-5 even though it's right here!

I ordered this product and it arrived in about a week. Installation took approximately 1 hour without having to lift the vehicle.

A couple of tips:
1. Use dish soap to get the rubber exhaust hangars to slip off (and slip back on) easily.
2. I placed a small tool box (approximately 10" tall) under the muffler to support it after removing the hangars.
3. Go over the installation with your assistant as it's much easier when the movements are coordinated.
4. Purchase a panel popper. They are inexpensive and make removing the hangars and panel clips a breeze.

Overall, the installation required only a moderate effort. Though only a few tools are required, having the right ones will make the job easier.

I would highly recommend this product from etrailer.com.

2023 CX 5. Easy to install, fit is perfect. Looks great with only the receiver showing.

by:
2016 Mazda CX-5

2016 Mazda CX-5. The hitch fit the car perfectly. Installation was moderately difficult and took me around 4 hours. Use some soapy water and large channel locks to slide exhaust rubber mounts off. I did not have to use the “fishing wire” on the back bolts. You can slip the backup plate into the frame and then push the bolt up into the backup plate and through the frame hole. You need to pry (pull) on the bottom of the plastic bumper to get the hitch up into place but then the bumper supports it.

by:

Very well built, tucks in tight close to bumper, welds are clean,
paint is smooth. Install is easy straight forward ( watched etrailers videos ) the hardest part was removing the exhaust hangers
, But found an easy way to pop them off with a pickel fork and a block of wood (came right off) ... pictured

by:
2020 Mazda CX-5

Simple and straight forward. Pulled a couple clips, deleted a trim piece, loosened the muffler hangers, and bolted hitch in to place. With the help of a friend in 1 hours time it was done. Extremely simple, straight forward, no gotchas.

Great fit for my 2023 Mazda CX5 Preferred. I purchased this item and it arrived ahead of schedule. I had my local auto mechanic install it and they did a fabulous job. No cutting of the bumper, no funny sounds after driving it home. I can fi ally take my and my daughter's bikes on trips and further trails now!

2021 Mazda CX-5

Very happy with this hitch. All of the hardware fit perfectly, and the instructions were clear and concise.

by:

I've had this hitch for a year and it's been great. I use it for a hitch bike rack and it takes some abuse. Zero issues. I bought the same one from etrailer for a second car.

by:

Great hitch. I’m an engineer who used to tow with a diesel, so I can speak to the quality of this hitch. Receiver-to-hitch-frame design is much more secure than competitors (welded to vertical flat bar brackets versus a slice of lateral angle iron that could bend and only relies on one weld). Bolts lined up perfectly and installation was smooth. I use it for a 2x bike rack or a tow ball. 2” receiver makes adapting easier than dinky 1-1/4” from Mazda. I also purchased a 7-way & 4-pin lighting kit and spliced into the tail-light circuit....CX-5’s aren’t rated high enough to need a brake controller so I’m set for whatever may come. Take your time and it’ll come out better than factory.

2021 Mazda CX-5

This is the second hitch I've ordered from etrailer and again it was a smooth experience. Very easy to find the correct model for your car and the installation videos are top notch.
I had a helper for the install and it took about an hour an a half. Wasn't too bad. I installed without using ramps or a jack but did back out to the end of the driveway and the 6 inch drop to the road was helpful. The worst part was getting the muffler hangers off. One video suggested removing the muffler but we decided not to after seeing how much room we had.
Hitch seems to be high quality and fit perfectly. Looks great.
Highly recommend watching the videos.

by:

Great product. An exact fit for my 2015 Cx-5. Bolt on goodness. It wasn’t difficult at all to install. A friend and I were able to bolt it on in about 40 minutes, it is kinda heavy. The videos from etrailer were especially helpful and accurate. The package arrived very quickly. About 2 days I think. Very sturdy product. Holds my bike rack no problem, maybe even a small trailer, could even get that boat I’ve always wanted? ??
Only one small issue, when I received the box the hitch was poking out. Not sure if that happened when I picked it up or if it happened sometime on the delivery route. Hat being said it was not damaged at all. Not a scratch so it’s pretty strong.
I would definitely purchase this product or any other from etrailer again. Good customer service too.

by:
2014 Mazda CX-5

The hitch fit my 2014 Mazda CX-5 without any trouble. The video was right on and the hitch is made quite heavy-duty. It is hidden very well and carries the bike rack well. It is hard to find a 2 inch receiver for this car and the Mazda factory hitch is 1 1/4 receiver and about $300 with out install. Dealer would not toss in the hitch on my purchase so I installed yours in about 1/2 hour at less than half the cost.

by:

Fit perfectly and instructions were really easy to fallow. I also took the the trailer connection one step further by buying an 4 pole flat mounting bracket and feeding it trough the driver’s side tail light wiring grommet.

by:
2016 Mazda CX-5

Great Products!
I like to think of
myself as a pretty handy guy, install was was fairly easy. One step I had an issue with was getting to clear under and behind the bumper. Had to manipulate the rear plastic bumper to fit the hitch up and under, but other than that things went fairly well. Online video was very helpful. Overall time to install, start to finish took me approximately an hour.

by:

I usually don't have time to write a review. but because I really like how easy was the installation and the wiring instruction that you guys posted in your website. I am writing now to appreciate the business we done. the Hitch design and material well done.I received the items on time. the job took 2 hours for both hitch and wiring.
you deserve 5 stars.

2016 Mazda CX-5

A well built American made reciever hitch. Install was easy (probably easier with a helper to hold it in place) it only took me about 45mins- 1 hour. The shipping was fast, the instructions were clear and etrailer's site is very helpful with helping you find what you need for your application.

by:

This hitch feels incredibly sturdy. Attaching it to my wife’s 2016 Mazda CX-5 was a challenge, but I put it on by myself. I would highly recommend everyone who plans to install it themselves, WATCH THE eTrailer INSTALLATION VIDEO before you get started!!! It’s only 5-6 minutes, and 1/2 of it is a description of the hitch. It will save you at least 1-2 hrs of googling stuff and figuring out the steps in the paper instructions.

by:

First, shipping was just stupid fast. I hoped to have it to install over New Year's weekend and it came in time for Christmas.
Installed it this morning with only the 11-yr-old and rented jack stands to help, and even though the 20 minute install time called for in the instructions was a bit optimistic, I did have the stands back to the rental shop in under 2 hours. Instructions were spot on.
Only plan to use it to mount a bike rack, and it will be several months before MN weather will allow for that type of activity, but I expect it will work perfectly just like the last receiver I ordered from etrailer.com.
Thanks!

by:

Excellent product that is a bit more complicated to install if you don't have a lift. If you don't have the muffler low enough, it will be difficult to clear the underside of the bumper. With an extra pair of hands and strategic cursing (and a muffler hangar tool), it went on, looks great, and is super sturdy.

  • Which Hitch for 2020 Mazda CX-5
Sportframe is the brand name Draw-Tite uses for some of its Class 1 trailer hitches. It doesn't denote a special fit or design. For your vehicle we offer both Class II hitches (1-1/4 inch receiver tube) or Class III hitches with a 2 inch receiver opening. If the choice is available, I'll always recommend going with a Class III because there's a much better selection of hitch mounted accessories available for it and usually there isn't too much of a price differential between a Class II...

  • How Would Ball Mount Height be Picked out for Trailer Hitch Installed on 2015 Mazda CX-5
I attached an FAQ that details how to pick out the correct ball mount. Picking out the correct ball mount will allow your trailer to sit as level as possible. Basically you will first measure the height from the ground to the top of the receiver opening on the hitch while on level ground. Next, you will measure the coupler height from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler when the trailer is on level ground. Next, you will need to compute the difference. If the hitch height is...

  • Why Do Trailer Hitches Have Higher Towing Capacities than Vehicles
I apologize for confusion on towing capacity figures. The hitches we offer are first designed to fit the vehicle and then reinforced to be as strong as possible. Then the hitch is fail tested till a safe capacity is decided on. A lot of times the capacity ends up higher than what the vehicle is rated for but the info is still listed so that people know it's a strong trailer hitch that wouldn't fail under normal use.

Ideally your tongue weight needs to be between 10 and 15 percent of your trailer's total weight. That lines up with your trailer being able to tow up to 5,000 lbs and up to 700 lbs tongue weight. So with boat trailers you can get a larger percentage difference between unloaded and loaded since boats typically carry most of their weight at the rear and the axle location is based on that.
