Will Going to a Higher Capacity Trailer Tire Increase the Weight Capacity of the Trailer

Question:

Can I swap 4.80x8 trailer tire and 4 hole wheels for 4.80 x12 or 5.30 x 12? I am trying to increase the load capacity if the trailer.

No, adding a higher capacity trailer tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer UNLESS the tires you have are rated lower than the axle capacity.

A trailers weight capacity is set by the axle so that is what you will be limited to. If you check the trailer tongue or frame, somewhere there should be a plate or sticker that lists the axle capacity. If you cannot find this information then it may be on the axle itself. If you still cannot find it there then you will need to pull off a hub and get the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the metal of the bearings.

Another problem with going to a larger tire is that there may not be clearance for the larger size. It can also make the trailer taller and increase the likelihood of sway.
