What Piece Of Bumper Needs To Be Removed To Install Curt Trailer Hitch C12170 On 2019 Mazda CX-5 GT?

Question:

I want to know if part of the bumper has to be removed on the Grand Touring model for this hitch to work. Your video does not specifically say they are installing it on the Grand Touring model. My dealership says for the hitch to correctly mount a bike rack part of the bumper needs to be remove so the hitch extends far enough away from the vehicle so the bikes aren’t up against it. What say you?

There is a small plastic trim piece on the rear bumper of your 2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring that will need to be removed to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12170 which you can see in the included picture that a customer sent in when doing this install, and in the included install video.

This piece just pops in and can be removed by using a flat head screwdriver with no cutting required.

Now when it comes to a bike rack all you will need to do is makes sure the rack you are using has a long enough shank to not interfere with the bumper.

When we installed the # C12170 we found that from the center of the hitch pin hole to the most outward edge of the rear bumper measured 3". With that measurement in mind you will need to make sure the bike rack you choose measures at least 4" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the bike rack to avoid any interference issues.

If you do not already have a bike rack I recommend the Thule Hitching Post Pro 4 Bike Rack # TH934XTR which will accommodate 4 bikes weighing up to 35lbs each. This rack measures 13-1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the bumper so you will have no fitment issues.

I included videos showing both of the products mentioned being installed on a 2021 Mazda CX-5 for you to take a look at.
