Recommended Replacement 7-way Connectors For 2019 Ram 1500 Classic and Keystone Cougar

Question:

I have a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 with the tow package. Standard, factory 7 way connector/socket. Newer plug on trailer, a Keystone Cougar. Plug seems to fit tight and engage well with socket. However, I have had ongoing problem with e-brake connection and brake control fluctuating on and off, especially when stopping not good or starting or when hit a bump. In other words, any time the cord moves and the plug moves in the socket. Works well when steady speed on smooth road. Seems to be a connection issue at the socket. I’ve heard loose connections can be an issue with the Dodge trailer sockets. “Fixed” it for a bit with zip ties, but that doesn’t seem to help any more. Is there a plug/socket combo that “locks” or secures plug in place? Is a pin plug/socket a better set up than a standard 7 way? My socket just has a plastic cap that is supposed to hold the plug steady. Thoughts on cause or fix? Thanks!

I have replacement options for you, but there is not a different style of 7-way connector that is more secure than a 7-way blade connector like you have or one that locks together.

One option is to go ahead and replace both the factory truck connector and the trailer connectors with new ones so you get the correct fit, and do not have any disconnecting issue any longer.

For your 2019 Ram 1500 Classic I recommend the 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - Vehicle End # HM40975 to replace the connector on your truck, and the Pollak 7-Way Connector # PK12706 to replace the 7-way connector on your trailer.

I included videos for both of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
