How to Diagnose Power Draw When a Wiring Harness is Installed

Question:

I have a 2009 Ford ranger which is working fine but When I hookup a wiring harness to my truck it kills the battery within a few minutes, can you tell me why this happens and what I need to do. Thank you

It sounds like there may be a bad ground somewhere. If your vehicle did not come with a factory harness, you should try connecting the ground to bare metal instead of tapping into a factory ground wire. If the ground is acting weird, it will cause all sorts of weird things to happen, including the battery being drained.

If the vehicle did come with factory wiring and you are replacing it, the harness you are using may have a short in it. This would cause power draw. In this case, you would just need to replace the harness with a new one.

If you can send a few pictures of the harness you are installing, I may be able to help you further if the ground doesn't get everything working properly.
