I'm unaware of any negative effects of installing a standard powered taillight converter like # C59496 on a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen.

I did look through the owner's manual, and I found where Volkswagen states "Never connect the trailer lights directly to the electrical system of your vehicle." This is most likely to prevent any short circuits that occur in the trailer's wiring from damaging the vehicle's wiring system.

A powered taillight converter like the # C59496 is circuit protected. In the event of a short circuit in the trailer wiring, the taillight converter itself will be damaged, thus preventing the short from causing damage to the vehicle. The fact that the converter draws the needed power for the trailer lamps directly from the vehicle's battery (rather than drawing it through the taillight circuits) further serves to isolate the vehicle's wiring from damage.

The # HM48925 harness you'd looked at isn't a fit for your vehicle.
