Recommendations for a Trailer Mounted Utility Light for Night Boat Docking
Question:
I am looking for a backup light to go on my boat trailer. I plan on mounting it near the tongue to light up the area behind the trailer as well as the boat area to make loading after dark easier. My thought is to wire it into the tail light wire and mount a switch near the light so it would be able to be used after the truck is put in park leaving it on the ramp with the light lit. How bright would this light be? I realize it is hard to describe a light level. Also mounted the way I envision it would not be submerged, but would be open to rain etc. Is the back of the lamp also sealed? It is difficult to see from the picture as it looks like it has a mounting gasket to cover the rear. I plan on making a bracket using two of the side mounts and making a vertical bracket to mount it to. I am open to any other suggestions you might offer.

With a clear lens and 42 diodes, light # BUL90CB, would be plenty bright for your application. If you wired it into the running light circuit, you would just have to have the truck running lights on to power the light and not have to install a switch. Of course this would mean the light would be on all the time with the truck running lights.
The electrical components in the light are sealed. The gasket offers further protection from the elements and would work well for your application.
A utility light like # 507-12 is another option. You could put it on a switch like # BL0108-00. This light has 3,000 candle power which is very bright. I have included a link to a video demo of this light as well.
