Comparing Curt and Hopkins Trailer Wiring Harnesses for 2015 Mazda Miata MX-5
Question:
The recommended wiring links for this vehicle show 2 sets of wiring - Hopkins and Curt - one is $20 more, fine if needed. The more expensive one, the difference I think is a powered converter. Is the powered converter needed/desirable? Which is the best choice? Price difference is not significant.

There are definitely pros and cons to the two trailer wiring options you have for your 2015 Mazda MX-5. The Hopkins part # HM11141824 costs a bit more, has a more involved install, BUT once installed is the better choice as it's powered converted box allows the trailer lighting to draw it's power straight from the vehicle battery and not the taillight circuits. This gives you some peace of mind.
The Curt # 56082 costs less and install a bit easier but since it draws power from the vehicle taillights so in the event of a trailer wiring short it would potentially damage your vehicle wiring. Most likely it would just blow a fuse for the vehicle lighting but even that is unsafe since other motorists wouldn't know if you were signalling or stopping potentially.
